Wrexham sent clear Paul Mullin transfer message after concerning rumours

Paul Mullin has been linked with a move away from Wrexham in the summer after being frozen out by manager Phil Parkinson, with an ex-player giving his verdict on the situation
Wrexham's star striker Paul Mullin has been backed to dig deep and battle for his position despite being frozen out of the team. The prolific forward has been instrumental for the Red Dragons since his arrival in July 2021, netting an impressive 110 goals in 172 matches across all competitions.
The 30-year-old Liverpudlian has seen his fame skyrocket since joining the club shortly after it was taken over by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. His regular appearances on the 'Welcome to Wrexham' documentary series and a cameo in last year's blockbuster Deadpool and Wolverine film, courtesy of Reynolds, have significantly raised his profile.

However, following back surgery last summer, Mullin found it tough to hit his stride in the first half of Wrexham's League One season. He was notably absent from the matchday squad completely in the league following the January transfer window.

It followed manager Phil Parkinson bringing in strikers Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez to bolster his attack. Speculation about a rift with Parkinson soon emerged after Mullin's exclusion, but he dismissed such talk as "absolute nonsense" on social media.
Despite this, there have been strong rumours about a potential switch to Wigan Athletic during the summer transfer window. With Wrexham securing a spot in the Championship in April, questions loom over Mullin's future role.
However, ex-Wrexham and Swansea ace Lee Trundle has thrown his support behind Mullin, commending his exceptional track record and suggesting he can reclaim his place at the forefront of the team.
He told the Fearless in Devotion podcast: "If you take the goals that Mulls scores and the amount that he scores, you don't just lose that overnight. He had injuries at the start of the season, which kept him out."
"When you're used to scoring that many goals each season, as soon as you go through that little bad patch, it does affect you as a striker, and it would affect him. He's been the talisman for the team and he's been the one who's scored all the goals.

"Let's be fair, he's been one of the main reasons for Wrexham's success. He did hit that bad patch, but I do think that he could come back next season, because he's got it in him. I do think that he's a quality player."
Reports surrounding Wigan's interest in Mullin first surfaced in April, with claims that Wrexham might consider letting him depart without a fee. With his contract at the Racecourse Ground extending until summer 2027, the proposition of releasing Mullin could help free up wages.

However, Parkinson has reassured fans over Mullin's squad status, as well as that of his strike partner Ollie Palmer. Speaking to BBC Sport Wales in May, he said: "First of all, everyone's made a contribution. What level that has been doesn't matter because everybody's been together and contributed.
"Of course, there's always players who would have liked to have played more. Equally, contributions can come in many forms, so I'm delighted with everybody as a group.
"Mulls and Ollie will always be legends at this club for what they've done. They're under contract next year and they'll be back in pre-season ready to go again."
