Giancarlo Stanton is back in the Yankees' lineup while Aaron Judge's status remains unchanged
Stanton will play right field in one of the two games against the Tampa Bay Rays, but Aaron Judge is not expected to appear in the outfield in either.
There is no set timetable for Judge's return to the field. He was scheduled to test his right elbow with long toss on Tuesday.
'I don't know yet,' Boone said. 'What I've said is I'm waiting on the trainers to say, 'thumbs up.' He's expected to long toss again today, so I don't expect it here in Tampa. Could it be Boston? Maybe. I just don't know yet.'
Boone added that Judge may not regain full throwing strength this season.
'I don't think we're going to see him throwing like he normally does at any point this year, but that's OK,' Boone said. 'We've got to feel like he can go out there and protect himself.'
The Yankees are coming off a three-game sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals and hold a three-game lead for the final American League wild-card spot. Offensively, they will be satisfied if Judge can simply remain productive at the plate. Since being activated from the injured list on Aug. 5, Judge has been limited to designated hitter duties. He entered the week batting .333 with 39 home runs, 91 RBIs and a 1.134 OPS, all among the league leaders. His home run Sunday was his first extra-base hit since returning.
Judge's inability to play the field has reduced the team's flexibility. Stanton is batting .299 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .953 OPS this season, but his long injury history makes any outfield assignment a risk. He did not debut until mid-June because of tendinitis in both elbows. After playing three straight games in the outfield last week, he missed three consecutive games with soreness. He has declined to specify where the discomfort occurred.

PITTSBURGH (AP) — An MRI performed on Toronto first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.'s tight left hamstring showed no damage, though he was not in the lineup on Tuesday night for the Blue Jays' game in Pittsburgh. Blue Jays manager John Schneider said he wanted to be cautious with Guerrero and that the five-time All-Star could return Wednesday afternoon for the finale of the three-game series. Guerrero left Monday night's 5-2 loss to the Pirates in the fifth inning with hamstring tightness following a pair of stellar defensive plays. Guerrero did the splits twice at first to snag tosses from teammates, the last a pretty pick of a long throw by shortstop Bo Bichette to retire Jared Triolo to end the third. Guerrero returned to play the field in the fourth before being replaced by Ty France when his turn in the batting order came around in the top of the fifth. France started at first base on Tuesday. 'We're just trying to as careful as we can with him and I'm glad we kind of got him out of there when we did,' Schneider said of Guerrero. 'I think he was a little reassured, as were we, with the results (of the MRI). We can't afford to miss him for an extended period.' Guerrero is hitting .298 with 21 home runs and 69 RBIs in 124 games this season. The Blue Jays signed the 26-year-old to a 14-year, $500-million contract extension earlier this year. Dolphins make Matthew Judon's signing official and add cornerback Cameron Dantzler Sr.
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — The Miami Dolphins made their signing of Pro Bowl outside linebacker Matthew Judon official Tuesday after working out the veteran the day prior and added cornerback depth by signing veteran Cameron Dantzler Sr. Judon adds another skilled player to an already deep edge rushing unit that includes Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and Chop Robinson. Phillips and Chubb are returning this season from serious knee injuries, and Robinson is coming off a promising rookie year. Judon had 41 tackles, 5 1/2 sacks and an interception returned for a touchdown in 15 starts for the Atlanta Falcons last year. He played the first five seasons of his career with Baltimore and had a three-year stint with New England. Dantzler was a third-round pick by the Vikings in 2020 and had 149 tackles and three interceptions in three seasons with Minnesota, but he has not played football since the 2023 season with New Orleans. The Saints signed him to their practice squad and he appeared in two games that season. He hasn't played in the NFL since then — instead signing with the Canadian Football League's Hamilton Tiger Cats in 2024. He played for the United Football League's Memphis Showboats earlier this season. Dantzler will compete for a cornerback spot on a roster that lacks a standout star, though the Dolphins have added a couple other veterans this offseason in Mike Hilton Jr. and Jack Jones. Second-year cornerback Storm Duck and rookie Jason Marshall Jr. are also on the roster. Cam Smith, Isaiah Johnson, Ethan Bonner and Kendall Sheffield are among those who are competing for spots as well. Indiana Pacers reward coach Rick Carlisle for NBA Finals run with mulityear contract extension
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — The Indiana Pacers rewarded coach Rick Carlisle with a multiyear contract extension Tuesday following the team's surprising run to the NBA Finals. Team officials made the announcement about one month before the Pacers open training camp. The Pacers provided no additional details about contract terms. 'Since his return to the Pacers in 2021, coach Carlisle has been integral to our success, which includes leading us to consecutive Eastern Conference finals appearances and our first NBA Finals appearance in 25 years,' president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard said in a statement. 'Beyond his coaching achievements that rank him among the best in NBA history, coach Carlisle continues to embrace our community and give back to the state of Indiana with his Drive and Dish program.' The 65-year-old Carlisle seems to be rejuvenated in his second stint with the Pacers. He first took the Indiana job in 2003-04. Four seasons later, he was fired. After taking a year off from coaching, the New York state native was hired by the Dallas Mavericks. Carlisle became the longest-tenured coach and winningest coach in franchise history, going 555-478 in 13 seasons while leading the Mavs to the NBA crown in 2010-11. In June 2021, he stepped down in Dallas and one week later was hired by the Pacers for one big reason. 'Herb Simon, the Simon family, Steven Rales, Kevin Pritchard and our players make Indiana such a special place. Let's go!' Carlisle said, referring to the team owners and management. The Pacers struggled in his first two seasons back in the organization, going 60-114 during yet another attempt by Indiana to rebuild around a group of young players. But as Carlisle adapted his coaching style to play at a faster, more aggressive pace, it paid dividends each of the past two seasons. Indiana reached the Eastern Conference finals for the first time in a decade in 2024 and last season made their first Finals appearance since 2000. They forced Oklahoma City to Game 7, but couldn't close out the series after two-time All-Star Tyrese Haliburton suffered a torn Achilles tendon in the first quarter of the final game. Haliburton is expected to miss all of next season as he recovers. In eight seasons with the Pacers, Carlisle has gone 338-318. He's recorded the most wins in the franchise's NBA history and starts this season needing seven wins to become the 11th NBA coach with 1,000 career wins. Only one active coach, Milwaukee coach Doc Rivers, has more victories than Carlisle, who led the Pacers past the Bucks in first-round playoff series each of the past two years. He grew up in New York, near the Canadian border, played college basketball at Virginia and was a teammate of Hall of Famer Larry Bird on the Boston Celtics 1986 title team. Carlisle also was an assistant on Bird's coaching staff when the Pacers made their first Finals appearance and has become a fan favorite in his adopted hometown.
