Brazil's top court rules out Bolsonaro arrest after 'isolated' restriction breach

Straits Times4 days ago
BRASILIA - Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes decided on Thursday not to order the arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro for what he called an "isolated" breach of court-imposed restrictions but warned he could be imprisoned for future violations, according to a court filing.
Moraes, who oversees the case in which Bolsonaro is charged with plotting a coup, last week ordered him to wear an ankle bracelet and banned him from using social media over allegations he courted the interference of U.S. President Donald Trump, who tied 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports to what he called a "witch hunt" against the former president.
In his Thursday ruling, the justice kept in place the restraining orders he imposed on the former president last week and clarified he is not blocked from giving interviews.
On Monday, Moraes had threatened Bolsonaro with arrest, saying he breached the restrictions on his social media – including through third parties – when he talked to journalists.
Bolsonaro's lawyers on Tuesday told Moraes that the former president did not violate the ban and asked the court to clarify the exact scope of the restraining order. REUTERS

Trump warns Iran that its nuclear sites could be bombed again

Christopher Furlong/Pool via REUTERS TURNBERRY, Scotland - U.S. President Donald Trump warned on Monday that he would order fresh U.S. attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities should Tehran try to restart facilities that the United States bombed last month. Trump issued the threat as he held talks with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his Turnberry golf resort on the western coast of Scotland. Iran, which denies seeking to develop a nuclear weapon, has insisted it will not give up domestic uranium enrichment despite the bombings of three nuclear sites. Trump told reporters that Iran has been sending out "nasty signals" and any effort to restart its nuclear program will be immediately quashed. "We wiped out their nuclear possibilities. They can start again. If they do, we'll wipe it out faster than you can wave your finger at it," Trump said. REUTERS

Trump says it's difficult to deal with Hamas, talking about plans with Netanyahu

REUTERS/Leah Millis/File Photo TURNBERRY, Scotland - U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday said the Hamas militant group had become difficult to deal with in recent days, but he was talking with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about "various plans" to free hostages still held in the enclave. Trump also said the U.S. would work with other countries to provide more humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza, including food and sanitation. "We're going to set up food centers," with no fences or boundaries to ease access, Trump told reporters after a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at his golf resort in Turnberry, Scotland. Starmer described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "absolutely intolerable" and said food aid needs to be moved into the enclave quickly. "We need to galvanize other countries in support of getting that aid in, and yes, that does involve putting pressure on Israel, because it absolutely is a humanitarian catastrophe," he said. REUTERS

Trump says he is reducing 50 day deadline for Russia on war in Ukraine

TURNBERRY, Scotland - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday he was reducing the 50-day deadline he gave Russia over its war in Ukraine, underscoring his frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin for prolonging fighting between the two countries. "I'm disappointed in President Putin," Trump said, speaking alongside British Prime Minister Keir Starmer ahead of their meeting in Scotland. "I'm going to reduce that 50 days that I gave him to a lesser number because I think I already know the answer what's going to happen." He did not give a new deadline. Trump set the 50-day deadline earlier this month. The U.S. president has repeatedly voiced exasperation with Putin for continuing attacks on Ukraine despite U.S. efforts to end the war. Before returning to the White House in January, Trump, who views himself as a peacemaker, had promised to end the three-and-a-half-year-old conflict within 24 hours. Trump has threatened new sanctions on Russia and buyers of its exports unless an agreement is reached by early September. But the president, who has also expressed annoyance with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, has not always followed up on his tough talk about Putin with action, citing what he deems a good relationship that the two men have had previously. "We thought we had that settled numerous times, and then President Putin goes out and starts launching rockets into some city like Kyiv and kills a lot of people in a nursing home or whatever," Trump said. "And I say that's not the way to do it." REUTERS
