Bafana Bafana stand-in captain Nkosinathi Sibisi is grateful to coach Hugo Broos for standing by him during times of scrutiny regarding his national team call-ups.
Sibisi has been one of the ever-present players in the national team set-up since Broos took the reins more than four years ago. However, his selections were not always based on form, as he was often in and out of the Orlando Pirates defensive unit due to injuries, poor form and suspensions.
Broos admitted that it was not easy to continue selecting Sibisi when he was not playing regularly, but believed his presence and natural skillset remained valuable to the team. Fortunately for the Belgian coach, his faith has recently been rewarded. Sibisi featured prominently for Pirates this past season, missing only three Premiership matches.

As a result, Broos named him one of the temporary captains for the current international window, alongside Fawaaz Basadien, stepping in for regular captain and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. Basadien captained the team in the first international friendly against Tanzania at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane last Friday, which ended in a goalless draw.
Sibisi, meanwhile, is set to lead the side against Mozambique in another friendly at the same venue on Tuesday at 7.30pm, and he is thankful to Broos for his continued belief.
'It's a privilege and an honour for me,' said Sibisi, who is also vice-captain at Pirates.
'I'd like to thank the coach for showing confidence in me. We have been together since the very first camp he started.
'There were question marks at times whenever I was here. So, to be able to lead the team tomorrow (tonight) will be a huge honour for me.'

Sibisi has formed a solid partnership with youngster Mbekezeli Mbokazi at centre-back for Pirates after the latter was promoted to the senior team by coach José Riveiro. That partnership is set to continue at international level, as Broos confirmed in a pre-match press conference that the duo could start together against the Mambas.
'I've played with Mbokazi at club level, so it won't be any different in the national team,' Sibisi said.
'He's a very humble boy, and he takes instructions well. So, it's very easy for me to play alongside him. I don't think it'll be a big adjustment for him. As the coach has mentioned, it might be a perfect choice for me to partner him – to give him guidance and the confidence to take his chance.'
Including Sibisi and Mbokazi, there are six other Pirates players in the current Bafana squad, making up the largest contingent from any club. However, the 23-member squad selected for the two friendlies has gelled well, with no signs of division along club lines.
'The camaraderie is key. I think everyone is playing their part – regardless of whether it's guys from Pirates or Stellies. When we come together, we are representing Bafana,' Sibisi said.
'We have to put that aside and play as one. We know that if we play as one, there's a better chance of us winning the game ahead of us.'
Sibisi is also in camp with some of the defenders – Basadien and Thabo Moloisane (both from Stellenbosch) – who could be his rivals for the PSL Defender of the Season award.
'The guys you've mentioned are really top, top players. Fawaaz and Thabo have been doing well for Stellenbosch,' Sibisi said.
'It's always nice when we meet. There's no sort of competition between us. We just try to do the best we can for our clubs and hope that is rewarded.
'As for the Defender of the Season award, we'll just let God take His way. If it is meant to be, then it will be. If not, we will just continue.'

Orlando Pirates man chosen to solve big Kaizer Chiefs problem?
Kaizer Chiefs are looking to step up their transfer activity as the new transfer window is fasting approaching. Chiefs finished outside the top eight for a second consecutive season and know improvements are imperative for the next. Furthermore, Chiefs will be playing in the CAF Confederation Cup next season. This a feat that they earned after beating arch rivals Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup final. That will see their schedule become increasingly difficult, factoring more games and travel throughout the continent. Then having to balance that with potentially, Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout and Nedbank Cup games. With that in mind, Chiefs management will understand they will need strength and depth as well as experience. This then looks to have led them to the surprise move to sign Paseka Mako to boost their left-back ranks. The 31-year-old would be arriving from arch nemesis Pirates with a wealth of know-how. This after playing continental football and winning six trophies while with the Buccaneers. He would also come in as a potential starter, solving the left-back issue at Amakhosi. Now according to SABC Sport , Chiefs are in advanced talks to sign Mako after recently leaving Pirates. 'SABC Sport can exclusively reveal that former Orlando Pirates defender Paseka Mako could be heading to Naturena as talks with Kaizer Chiefs have progressed to an advanced stage. According to information gathered by the public broadcaster, the 31-year-old has entered into talks with their Soweto rivals over a potential move to The Glamour Boys ahead of the upcoming season. Mako now presents a viable option and will arrive as a free agent, should the finer details be ironed out and all parties involved are satisfied.' Wrote the publication. Chiefs fans, with the experience Mako has, would he be the right signing for your club? Pirates fans, would you be disappointed to see him at Amakhosi? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. Latest:Saleng stays at Orlando Pirates or moving to Kaizer Chiefs?
Orlando Pirates have already made some big player decisions this close window, with Monnapule Saleng potentially next on the list. Saleng has been isolated from the Pirates first team for the whole of 2025, with rumours he'll join Kaizer Chiefs. He last played for Pirates in December 2024, in a CAF Champions League game against Al Ahly. Even in that game, Saleng's involvement from he start was a bit of a surprise, as he had been MIA for a while prior. It then quickly became apparent that there was something wrong between club and player. It was uncovered that Saleng was not happy with his contract situation at Pirates. The speedy winger then resurfaced with Bafana Bafana and was part of their first leg CHAN win over Egypt. He then made headlines for the wrong reasons, again, when he failed to join their camp ahead of the way leg. Even though he was pictured back at training with Pirates towards the end of the season, Saleng's still in limbo. Despite rumours that he has joined arch rivals Chiefs on a pre-contract, there's still no confirmation on that. And now according to Soccer-Laduma , there's still a glimmer of hope that he remains a Buccaneers instead! 'The club is busy with preparations for next season, and you can expect more players to be allowed to move on to make space for new signings. He (Saleng) is one of the players the club is currently busy with regarding his future. But from what I understand, there is a slight chance for him to stay – if the parties manage to sort out their differences. If not, then anything could happen. At the end of the day, he needs to get back on the field and play. The club loves the boy, and he loves the club – it's just that there were issues that needed to be sorted out, which affected his progress this season,' said the source. Pirates fans would you be happy with Saleng staying? Chiefs fans, are you still hopefully he joins? Let us know by clicking on the comment tab. REVEALED:Orlando Pirates' pre-season and Rulani Mokwena plan
Orlando Pirates will begin new era which will include a new coach for the first time in three years. Pirates had stability under former coach Jose Riveiro who has just left the club to join Al Ahly. During his tenure, Riveiro has helped Pirates win five trophies. Three MTN8 titles in a row as well as back to back Nedbank Cup titles. Furthermore, Beyond that, he led the Buccaneers into a second place in the Betway Premiership. Beyond local boarders, he ensured qualification for the side, into the group stages of the CAF Champions League. After doing so for the first time since 2018, they finished top of their group and unbeaten. Riveiro led Pirates to a semifinal finish in the CAF Champions League, with a Nedbank Cup final too. That has seen a vacancy open up at the Sea Robbers for the first time. A familiar name has since resurfaced in Rulani Mokwena. Having had a short stint with the Buccaneers before, he has expressed interest in a potential return. It was then reported earlier that Pirates were also looking at Mokwena as their next potential coach. Now according to Soccer-Laduma , The club are looking to appoint him before they head to Germany in early July. 'The team (Pirates) is expected to leave for pre-season in Germany during the first week of July. So they are planning to have the new coach by that time as part of their pre-season. Let's wait and see who it will be. Rulani Mokwena's name is up there on the list,' said the source to the same publication.
