‘Ujire Chalo' protest on Aug 24
He told reporters at the Pathrika Bhavan on Thursday, that many cases of rape, murder, and robbery were reported in Dharmasthala several years ago. A discussion on deaths reported in Dharmasthala was held in the assembly in 1983. While schoolteacher Vedavalli was allegedly murdered in 1986, student Padmalatha was raped and murdered in 1973, but the accused have not been identified yet. Accused in the alleged murder of a mahout, Narayana, and Yamuna reported in 2012, were also not traced.
While Sowjanya was murdered in 2012, as many as 452 unnatural deaths were reported in Dharmasthala and Ujire between 2002 and 2012, alleged Ganiga.
"Despite several such cases being reported, the miscreants involved could not be caught. This lapse on the part of police, who failed to arrest the accused, leads to mistrust about the place. Seeking investigation and arrest of the accused in all cases, a complaint has been submitted to the state chief secretary," he said.

Stating that an acquittal committee has not been formed in connection with the murder of Sowjanya, he questioned the silence of political leaders. Extending support to the ongoing SIT probe into the mass burial allegations made by the complainant witness, Ganiga said that all unnatural deaths reported in Dharmasthala should also be probed by the team. A large number of people from various parts of the state are likely to take part in the 'Ujire Chalo' protest, he said, adding that the samiti has already informed the jurisdictional police about the protest planned on Aug 24.

Home Minister will make statement in both the Houses on Monday over alleged Dharmasthala mass burials, says Dinesh Gundu Rao
Home Minister G. Parameshwara will make statements in the two houses of State Legislature on Monday (August 18) over alleged Dharmasthala burials. The statements will reveal several facts related to the ongoing investigation by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) into the case, said Dakshina Kannada district in charge Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao in Mangaluru on Friday. Taking to reporters after the district-level Independence Day programme at the Nehru Maidan, the Minister said the SIT was set up following demand by several people, including former Supreme Court Judge V. Gopala Gowda, Pattadhikari of Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala and left wing activists. The dispassionate inquiry by the SIT will reveal the truth behind the serious allegation made by the 50-year-old former sanitation worker. Asked about the interview given by the complainant, who is protected under witness protection scheme, to a national news channel on Thursday, wherein he revealed names of people who joined in burying bodies with him and also made new allegations against Dharmasthala temple administration, Mr. Rao said the SIT will definitely look into the veracity of his allegations and take necessary legal action. The State government and the police were behaving responsibly with regard to the case. 'Our intention (in setting up SIT) was to bring the truth out'. Whether the SIT will continue with the excavation in new sites with only one skeletal remains being found in one of the 17 sites that were excavated so far, the Minister said Mr. Parameshwara's statements will reveal further steps to be taken up by the SIT. The SIT, he said, has done a good work in the case. The government was keen in collecting evidence related to the complaint and it will not keep answering to speculative reports on the case. The SIT will also look into the likely conspiracy to defame the Dharmasthala temple and temple administrators in this case. Reacting to the call by BJP State president B.Y. Vijayendra to his party legislators to assemble in Dharmasthala on Sunday, Mr. Rao it was not surprise to see the BJP taking political mileage from this sensitive matter, Mr. Rao said.

Mangolpuri tree felling: NGT holds Delhi Police accountable, orders compensatory plantation
New Delhi: National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed Delhi Police to carry out and maintain compensatory plantation for the illegal felling of a peepal tree and unauthorised pruning of two neem trees in the Mangolpuri area. Police have also been instructed to ensure the survival of the saplings for at least five years. The order follows a complaint filed by a local resident, alleging tree damage during renovation work at the Mangolpuri police station complex, carried out through a private contractor. A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Prakash Shrivastava had earlier, in March 2024, directed Delhi Forest Department to inspect the site. In its affidavit filed in March 2025, the department confirmed violations under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act (DPTA), 1994. In its reply, Delhi Police asserted that the old police station complex in Mangolpuri was undergoing certain changes and thus remained vacant under the care of the caretaker. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like These 11 Everyday Foods Might Be the Key to Knee Pain Relief Undo . The reply further stated that the work order for changes and repair of the broken tin shed on the premises was given to a contractor, and the labourers of the contractor pruned the trees obstructing the repair work of the tin shed without obtaining any permission. The reply also reveals that the police issued an explanation notice to the caretaker, who failed to prevent unauthorised pruning of branches of the trees. The tribunal noted that 25 saplings of peepal and pilkhan trees have since been planted as part of compensatory afforestation. In its order dated Aug 14, the NGT stated: "We are of the opinion that the requisite action under the DPTA has been taken, and the compensatory plantation has been carried out. Police officials are directed to ensure the survival of the planted saplings for a period of five years." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). UK authorities discovered he had been using a Portuguese passport obtained with fake documents and a false name. Police revealed that despite being blacklisted in the UK in 2018, Savalia had returned to the country the same year after travelling to Spain. Savalia initially travelled to London in 2015 on a student visa but remained in the UK beyond the two-year visa validity. "Savalia was caught during the search operation and scanning of citizens by the London police. They deported him back in 2018 to Mumbai for overstay. Later, he came back using emergency certificate but was permanently blacklisted from the country. However, Savalia claimed he was seeking opportunity to return," said a police officer of the Sahar police station. Despite being deported in 2018, Savalia managed to fly to Germany and then to Spain.
