18 held for duping credit card holders of Rs 2.60 crore; data theft from call centre
'The accused, who were arrested after a six-month-long operation, obtained confidential customer data through insiders at a Gurugram-based call centre, posed as bank executives and tricked victims into revealing details such as OTPs and CVVs,' an officer said.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (IFSO) Vinit Kumar said the syndicate used the stolen credentials to purchase high-value electronic gift cards from online platforms, which were then sold to travel agents. 'The proceeds were laundered through cash and cryptocurrency channels, primarily Tether (USDT),' he added.
According to police, the gang deliberately avoided Delhi-based customers while running the operation across states. Masterminds were identified as Ankit Rathi, Waseem, and Vishal Bhardwaj. Call centre employees Vishesh Lahori and Durgesh Dhakad were accused of leaking data, while others arrested included handlers, SIM suppliers, and operational members. During the crackdown, police recovered 52 mobile phones, multiple SIM cards, and confidential bank details of customers.

Missing fisherman remains untraceable at Kadem dam in Nirmal district; Penganga in spate in Adilabad district
Drone-aided search operations for a 43-year-old fisherman who was feared drowned in the swirling downstream waters at Kadem dam in Nirmal district on Saturday proved futile, as he could not be traced out till reports last came in late on Sunday evening. The fisherman, identified as Gangadhar of Kannapur village, was washed away in the gushing waters on Saturday when he had gone downstream of the dam to catch fish, sources said. As many as 15 crest gates of the dam were lifted on Saturday following heavy inflows into the reservoir from the catchment areas of the Kaddem project. The gates were later closed as the inflows from its upper reaches decreased, sources added. Police accompanied by the Disaster Response Force personnel conducted an intense search operation by using drones, but in vain. Meanwhile, Adilabad Collector Rajarshi Shah along with Superintendent of Police Akhil Mahajan inspected the breached stretch of the river bund between Yashwanthguda and Burnoor villages in Adilabad rural mandal on Sunday. As the Penganga river is in spate owing to release of huge inflows from the upstream areas in neighbouring Maharashtra, people living in the villages along the river course have been asked to remain alert. Meanwhile, the Praja Vani, the weekly grievance redressal meeting, scheduled to be held on Monday has been cancelled in view of forecast of heavy rains in Adilabad district for the next two days.

Hemachandran murder: one more suspect nabbed from Wayanad
The special investigation team (SIT) constituted by the Kozhikode City police has arrested one more person who reportedly had direct involvement in the alleged abduction and murder of Hemachandran, a Kozhikode-based businessman. Melbin Mathew, the fifth accused in the incident, was nabbed on Sunday (August 17) after the police collected strong evidence establishing his close contact with the other four partners in the alleged crime. Four Wayanad natives — P.V. Noushad, 33, Jyothish Kumar, 32, and B.S. Ajesh, 27 and V.V. Vysakh, 28 — had already been arrested in connection with the incident. Police sources said that Melbin was aware of the alleged conspiracy behind the abduction and murder of the 52-year-old following some financial deals. They said he was present in the car, which was used for the alleged abduction. It was on June 28 that the police cracked the murder case, which was initially registered as a case of man missing at the Kozhikode Medical College police station. The SIT zeroed in on the five suspects after a 16-month-long probe with the support of the Kozhikode City cyber cell and crime squad. Hemachandran, a Wayanad native, had temporarily settled at Mayanad in Kozhikode for his private chit fund business. The SIT found that he was abducted from Kozhikode city on March 20, 2024, and later murdered in Wayanad following some financial disputes. The successful recovery of the secretly buried body from the Cherambadi forest in Tamil Nadu was a major breakthrough in the investigation.

UP woman accuses brother, his ‘wife' of forcing her to convert, marry elderly man
A 21-year-old woman in Prayagraj has accused her elder brother and his purported wife of pressuring her to convert to another religion and force her into marrying a Kolkata-based elderly man from another community. The accused woman, Rubaiya, was arrested on Saturday and raids were on to trace the complainant's brother who is absconding, police said. In her complaint to police, the woman said her brother Rahul Kushwaha, who has a criminal background and was recently released after serving five years in prison, brought home Rubaiya introducing her to the family as his wife. An FIR has been registered at the Prayagraj Cantonment police station against Rahul and Rubaiya under Sections 298 (injuring or defiling place of worship, with intent to insult the religion of any class), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) and 351 (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and provisions of the anti-conversion law. According to the police, the complainant alleged that days after his release from prison last year, Rahul brought home Rubaiya, a mother of two children whose husband was lodged in prison. After Rubaiya started living in their house, Rahul prohibited the other family members from offering prayers to Hindu deities at home, the complainant alleged. Also, Rahul and Rubaiya started pressuring to embrace Islam and marry an elderly man from Kolkata, and when she resisted they even threatened to kill her, it was alleged. SK Kannojia, Station House Officer (SHO), Cantonment police station, said they will investigate if a gang or a racket is behind it. 'Rahul already has criminal cases against him,' he confirmed.
