Tiny fireball that crashed into Georgia home is 4.56bn-year-old meteorite, say experts

The Guardian2 days ago
A cherry tomato-sized fireball that crashed through the roof of a metro Atlanta house in June was a meteorite 20m years older than Earth, a scientist has determined.
In a news release on Friday, University of Georgia planetary geologist Scott Harris said that he arrived at that conclusion after examining 23 grams of fragments from a meteorite that were provided to him after the space rock pierced a man's home and dented its floor in the Henry county community of McDonough.
Harris subsequently looked at the fragments under microscopes and established that they came from a meteorite which formed 4.56bn years earlier. Experts estimate the Earth is roughly 4.54bn years old.
'This particular meteor that entered the atmosphere has a long history before it made it to the ground of McDonough,' Harris said in the news release. He explained the space rock belonged to a group of asteroids 'in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter that we now think we can tie to a breakup of a much larger asteroid about 470m years ago'.
According to Harris, the homeowner reported to him that he has continued finding space dust specks around his living room from the asteroid strike.
Harris said he, his fellow University of Georgia scientists and colleagues at Arizona State University intend to submit their findings to the Meteorological Society's nomenclature committee, which oversees naming new meteorites. Harris said his team has proposed to name its subject the McDonough Meteorite.
The University of Georgia said the meteorite studied by Harris and his colleagues was the 27th recovered in the history of the state, which was founded in 1788. It was among six meteorites in that group whose fall was witnessed.
'This is something that used to be expected once every few decades and not multiple times' in a relatively short time as has been the case, Harris said. 'Modern technology in addition to an attentive public is going to help us recover more and more meteorites.'
Analyzing such space rocks is crucial for understanding the possible threat of much larger, more perilous asteroids, Harris added.
'One day there will be an opportunity, and we never know when it's going to be, for something large to hit and create a catastrophic situation,' Harris remarked. 'If we can guard against that, we want to.'
With respect to the case seen in McDonough, the meteorite hurtled to the ground at about 12.30pm, emitting a boom and rattling houses across Atlanta, officials said. Images and video of the fiery fireball – reportedly visible from North and South Carolina – spread quickly.

The US's National Weather Service didn't initially recognize what had happened because the fireball resembled lightning on the agency's global lightning mapper, an official said at the time.
Yet local emergency management director Ryan Morrison said officials began suspecting a meteorite when it became clear the fireball had punched through a home's roof and cracked through the laminate flooring to the concrete.
The affected homeowner requested that the government withhold their identity because they have a small child, Morrison has said.

Jeff Bezos ‘obsessed' with making wife Lauren Sanchez next Bond girl

Jeff Bezos is 'obsessed' with casting his wife Lauren Sanchez in the latest Bond film, Hollywood insiders have claimed. The Amazon founder is reportedly pushing the makers of Bond 26 to consider Sanchez, a journalist, trained pilot, and one-time astronaut, for a role as the latest Bond girl. Since Ursula Andress first hit screens as the original Bond girl in 1961 playing Honey Ryder in Dr No, the role of the fictional spy's love interest has become a coveted one. The role, which has become almost as iconic as that of Mr Bond himself, has been played by the likes of Eva Green, Honor Blackman, Halle Berry and Jane Seymour. 'This isn't just fantasy casting - Jeff wants her on screen, period,' a Hollywood source told Rob Shuter, a British gossip blogger and former executive editor of OK! magazine's US edition. The insider added that the billionaire is 'obsessed' with finding a role for his wife, 55, in the new film, which is slated for release next year or early 2027. Despite fervent speculation, it's still not clear who will replace Daniel Craig as 007 in the film. The actor bowed out of the franchise after starring in No Time To Die in 2021. The films director was announced as Denis Villeneuve, the French-Canadian filmmaker behind the Dune franchise, in July. Bezos, the third-wealthiest person in the world, took over the franchise when he acquired MGM as part of a takeover of MGM studios by Amazon in 2022. The original producing founders of the Bond franchise, the Broccoli family, controlled the franchise since the first 007 film, Dr No, in 1962. Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman bought the rights to Ian Fleming's spy novels in 1961 and set up the British studio Eon Productions, in London. Bezos's takeover sparked concern the beloved British spy and his adventures would become 'commercialised', with author William Boyd warning fans they would soon see '007 theme parks'. 'Certainly wait for Bond aftershave – and for the theme park and the dinner jackets,' he told The Observer. 'The new owners will have to commodify everything about their billion-dollar purchase, so there will be nightclubs and vodkas.' Shortly after acquiring the Bond franchise, Bezos tweeted: 'Who'd you pick as the next Bond?' prompting a flurry of posts from concerned fans who begged him: 'Please don't ruin this franchise'. Others urged the 61-year-old to be true to Mr Bond's roots and keep him a Brit. According to Mr Shuster's Substack, the Amazon mogul can 'do what he wants' with the films, after handing over a rumoured $8.5m (£6.3m). While Sanchez is not well known for her acting, she has featured in a number of films. Sanchez played a television journalist in Fight Club, and made minor appearances in The Day After Tomorrow, Fantastic Four, and White House Down.

US selects 11 firms for program to fast-track small nuclear test reactors

WASHINGTON, Aug 12 (Reuters) - The U.S. Department of Energy said on Tuesday it has made an initial selection of 11 companies for a pilot program seeking to develop high-tech test nuclear reactors and get at least three of them to begin operating in less than a year. As artificial intelligence and data centers boost power demand, the U.S. is aiming to develop small nuclear reactors which developers say will be cheaper to build per Megawatt of output than today's large reactors because the parts could be replicated in factories. The department's move comes after President Donald Trump issued executive orders in May seeking to speed permitting of nuclear reactors and reform the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, an independent agency. The orders allow the Energy Department to authorize the test reactors, without the NRC. 'President Trump's Reactor Pilot Program is a call to action,' said James Danly, deputy energy secretary. 'These companies aim to all safely achieve criticality by Independence Day, and DOE will do everything we can to support their efforts.' COMPANIES SELECTED The department selected the following companies: Aalo Atomics., Antares Nuclear, Atomic Alchemy, Deep Fission Inc., Last Energy., Oklo (OKLO.N), opens new tab , Natura Resources LLC, Radiant Energy, Terrestrial Energy, and Valar Atomics. The department said each company will be responsible for all costs associated with designing, manufacturing, constructing, and decommissioning their test reactors. Small modular and so-called "advanced" nuclear reactors have been talked about in the U.S. for years, but the only ones operating are in China and Russia. Hurdles include getting permits for plants that generate electricity for the grid, developing commercial levels of a new fuel some of the reactors plan to use called high-assay low-enriched uranium, and developing factories for the reactors when none of the plants are yet operating.

The future of cancer treatment is ‘personalized' mRNA vaccines. Experts fear RFK research cuts will jeopardize that

Scientists have discovered the ability to 'personalize' cancer treatments using cutting-edge genetic technology - but experts fear that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.'s, recent funding cuts will have 'a profound chilling effect' on U.S. progress in this area of medicine. The new mRNA vaccines are specifically engineered to address the genetic differences of each patient with stomach cancer, according to Japanese researchers in a study published Tuesday, which makes them more effective than standard treatments. But, vaccine experts told The Independent that $500 million cuts to mRNA development at Emory University, Pfizer, and other institutions in flu, Covid and infectious disease vaccines could be devastating to progress in the U.S. 'Secretary Kennedy's decision to cancel $500 million in contracts and spread lies about the safety and protection offered by mRNA vaccines will have a profound chilling effect on innovative medical research,' Dr. Jennifer Nuzzo, director of the Pandemic Center at the Brown University School of Public Health, told The Independent in an email. 'mRNA vaccines hold tremendous promise to not only protect us from some of the worst infections, but also from devastating diseases like cancer,' she added. 'Rather than look forward at the promise of life-saving cures, the secretary would prefer that we look backwards towards the dark ages when these diseases ravaged us.' mRNA vaccines work differently from traditional vaccines, which inject a weakened virus into the body to trigger an immune response. Instead, mRNA vaccines teach the body's cells to make small and harmless pieces of virus that trigger the same response. The only mRNA vaccines currently available are Covid vaccines, but cancer vaccines work by getting the body to attack the disease. The new vaccines, described in the Japanese study, harness this technology and advance it by targeting unique spots on tumors. Last week, Kennedy said he would wind down some mRNA vaccine development, saying that the Department of Health and Human Services was 'shifting that funding toward safer, broader vaccine platforms that remain effective even as viruses mutate.' Kennedy, a longtime vaccine skeptic, has spread misinformation that mRNA Covid vaccines are deadly and that vaccines 'poisoned' American children, despite decades of public research and countless government assessments that have deemed them safe. HHS's mRNA cuts have not impacted cancer vaccine research, which is underway at the Texas-based Baylor College of Medicine and other medical institutions, Dr. Peter Hotez, a vaccine scientist and pediatrician at the school, said. Baylor had announced it was testing the effectiveness of personalized mRNA vaccines in 2023. But, funding cuts and denouncements of the tech can affect the field more broadly. 'Therefore it's important that the federal government and the Department of Health and Human Services reverse their position on mRNA vaccines and throw their support behind this technology,' Hotez said. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, told The Independent that mRNA research in the fight against cancer is 'critical.' 'It's tragic that we have wrapped this up into politics, which will only hurt our ability to move forward,' he said. HHS told The Independent said that recent $500m cuts to Covid, flu and infectious disease mRNA vaccines would not impact other medical research in the area. 'Technologies that were funded during the emergency phase but failed to meet current scientific standards will be phased out in favor of evidence-based, ethically grounded solutions – like whole-virus vaccines and novel platforms. Other uses of mRNA technology within the department are not impacted by this announcement,' Press Secretary Emily Hilliard said in an email. The new study, from Kindai University in Osaka, explains that the vaccine targets the unique biological signatures of each patient's tumor cells. 'NeoAgs, derived from individual genetic alterations in each cancer patient, serve as unique immunological targets on tumor cells and represent the key to personalized immunotherapy,' Kindai University's Professor Kazuhiro Kakimi said in a statement. The mRNA vaccine helps the body create more cancer-attacking white blood cells and resulted in tumors shrinking or disappearing. When used with an unnamed cancer drug, it had a heightened effect on tackling the tumor, the study found. The Japanese researchers said the vaccine was particularly effective on peritoneal metastasis, the condition when stomach cancer spreads to the lining of the abdomen. It is one of the most common forms of reoccurring cancer following surgery for stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in the world. The U.S. is estimated to see 30,300 new cases of stomach cancer and 10,780 deaths this year, according to the American Cancer Society. It disproportionally affects men, with more than 2,000 more deaths than women.
