Malaysia's police force gains global recognition for counterterrorism efforts, says home minister
He said this was evident in the trust placed by the US in PDRM's expertise to carry out the rehabilitation of two Malaysian detainees previously held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
'This shows that in this particular case, the PDRM's Special Branch possesses expertise and competence that convinced a major power like the United States.
'It means we can stand as equals in efforts to address terrorism threats so they do not pose a danger within our own country,' he said during the handover ceremony of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) post at the Police Training Centre (Pulapol) here today.
Media reports previously stated that the US had repatriated two Malaysian citizens in December 2024, after they had been detained at Guantanamo Bay for 18 years.
The two individuals involved, Mohammed Farik Amin, 49, and Mohammed Nazir Lep, 48, are currently undergoing a comprehensive rehabilitation process that includes social support services, welfare assistance, and health screening before being reunited with their families.
Saifuddin said it was crucial for the country to have a capable IGP, such as the 14th IGP Tan Sri Razarudin Husain, who played a key role in the repatriation of the two men.
He praised Razarudin's composure when engaging with various US agencies, including the CIA and FBI, in resolving the matter.
Meanwhile, Saifuddin stressed that the appointment of an IGP was not an award but a responsibility and burden that must be shouldered with full accountability.
He said this was because the IGP was not only accountable to the nation but also to the entire police force under his leadership.
Earlier at the ceremony, Bukit Aman Special Branch director Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail was officially appointed as the 15th IGP, succeeding Razarudin, effective today.
The handover ceremony was witnessed by Saifuddin and attended by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and senior PDRM officers. — Bernama

Over 100,000 foreigners in Sabah registered in digital data system
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 113,282 foreigners employed in Sabah's plantation sector have registered in the centralised digital data system. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the system facilitates real-time monitoring and management of foreign workers. He clarified that the digital data collection is unrelated to citizenship or permanent residency issues. The minister spoke after chairing key meetings on foreigner management and citizenship status in Sabah. The meetings were led by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at Menara Kinabalu. Saifuddin Nasution announced plans to expand data collection to agriculture, manufacturing, and mining sectors. A moratorium on enforcement will allow foreign workers time to register under the digital system. He emphasised the need for accurate data to shape policies on foreign residents in Sabah. The state government will provide a specific period for the moratorium's implementation. The meetings also addressed efforts to relocate the Palauh or Bajau Laut community for land-based employment. Saifuddin Nasution refuted claims that the community is neglected, highlighting government initiatives. Additionally, 1,247 out of 2,000 citizenship applications were approved at the JKKSK meeting. These applications spanned from 2021 to last year and were assessed under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution. Article 15A allows for citizenship grants in special circumstances. Chinese national detained for attacking KLIA immigration officer

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : A Chinese national set to leave the country was detained for attacking an immigration officer at KLIA Terminal 1 at 7.40pm yesterday. The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the suspect, another adult and two children, who were all Chinese nationals, were undergoing immigration clearance checks when the incident occurred, Harian Metro reported. AKPS said the officer manning the immigration counter had found that all four individuals did not have any record of entering Malaysia. The woman was then asked to give way to other travellers for further checks to be done, leaving her unhappy. 'The woman then hurled abusive language at the officer before pulling the latter's headscarf and pushing her head against a pillar in front of the counter. 'A minor struggle ensued. The suspect refused to calm down despite being instructed to do so,' the agency said. AKPS said the attack left the officer with a swollen left eye and pain on the right side of her head. She was sent to Cyberjaya Hospital for treatment. It said a police report had been filed and the suspect was in police custody. She is being investigated for obstructing a public servant in the discharge of their duty, causing hurt and using criminal force under Sections 186, 332 and 353 of the Penal Code, respectively.

Penang DAP to file police report over ‘illegal' Umno Youth-led rally on upside-down flag controversy
GEORGE TOWN, Aug 14 — Penang DAP will lodge a police report against an allegedly illegal gathering organised by Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh in Kepala Batas this evening. Penang DAP chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong called on the police to take stern action against Dr Akmal for his clear defiance of police directive not to organise a rally over the upside-down flag issue. 'The rally by Akmal Saleh and his group is a violation of the law and a provocation that threatens public order,' he said in a statement issued today. He said the police should take action to send a signal that such acts of provocation will not be tolerated in this country, especially during Merdeka month which should promote unity, not division. Sim said Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail had urged all parties not to gather at Kepala Batas today, but they ignored it. 'As part of the state government, Penang DAP fully respected the police's directives and did not mobilise our members or supporters to take part in the gathering,' he said. He said only local representatives were present to distribute the Jalur Gemilang in conjunction with Merdeka celebrations to foster patriotism and strengthen unity. Earlier this evening, Dr Akmal led approximately 200 people in a 1.4km march to the hardware shop in Kepala Batas over the upside-down flag issue. Dr Akmal had reportedly claimed that they only wanted to send a clear message about respecting the Jalur Gemilang and that it cannot be hung upside down. Earlier today, Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail had advised for the gathering to be called off as it could threaten public safety and well-being. 'To safeguard the safety of the local community and to prevent any form of unhealthy confrontation between opposing groups, PDRM advises all parties involved to cancel the planned gathering,' he said. Some of the shops in the area shuttered early to avoid being caught in the gathering. There was also heavy police presence in the area to control the crowd. The controversy arose after the hardware store in Jalan Bertam Perdana recently went viral for flying the national flag upside down. The 59-year-old shop owner, who was arrested and investigated over the incident, reportedly said it was an unintentional mistake while measuring the flagpole and that he had corrected the mistake later. Following the controversy, DAP announced that it would sponsor a giant Jalur Gemilang for the shop and mobilised Penang party members to distribute 831 flags.
