These initiatives were developed during the chief electoral officers' conference held in March. Under the new system, ED has introduced three key measures to improve electoral roll accuracy and voter convenience Electoral registration officers (EROs) will receive electronic death registration data directly from the Registrar General of India. TNN
This implementation follows Rule 9 of the Electoral Registration Rules, 1960, and Section 3(5)(b) of the Registration of Births and Deaths Act, 1969 (amended 2023).
This enables EROs to obtain prompt information about deceased persons, allowing booth level officers to conduct field verifications and remove names without awaiting formal applications.
Commission has enhanced the Voter Information Slip design to improve accessibility. The slip now features enlarged font sizes for voter serial numbers and part numbers, facilitating easier identification at polling stations and in
electoral rolls
.
The commission will issue standardised photo identity cards to all booth level officers appointed under Section 13B(2) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950. This measure helps citizens recognise and interact with BLOs with certainty. The commission emphasises the importance of building reliable connections between BLOs and voters during their house visits.

Maharashtra Sadan case: ED returned ‘wet, torn' passports, Bhujbal tells PMLA court
In a submission made before a Prevention of Money Laundering (PMLA) court, Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal said last week that his passport was returned to him 'wet and torn' due to a fire that broke out in the office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Mumbai on April 27. A similar submission was also made by his son, Pankaj, in a separate application before the court last week. Bhujbal and Pankaj had been named as accused in a case filed by the ED in connection with the Maharashtra Sadan case, and their bail conditions required them to deposit their passports with the ED. A fire had broken out at the Ballard Estate office of the ED on April 27. Both Bhujbal and his son had in April sought permission from the court to travel abroad and sought for their passports to be returned to them for that purpose. Two days after the fire, the court had on April 29 allowed the two to travel abroad. Their passports were returned to them on May 13. However, they submitted to the court that the passports were returned 'wet and torn'. Worried that it may cause problems during immigration, the duo applied for new passports via tatkal to expedite their travel. Bhujbal informed the court that this took time as he had to then also obtain fresh Schengen visas, and hence he had to alter his travel dates. From his earlier permitted dates between May 24 to June 8, he sought further permission to travel till June 12. Pankaj had also made the same submission. The ED opposed their pleas for the extension, stating that they may abscond and delay the trial, which is yet to commence. 'It is pertinent to note that the accused (is) already permitted to travel abroad. The passport of the applicant (was) wet and torn in the office of the Enforcement Directorate. Considering the reasons put forth in the application, it is allowed. Extension for travel for the period of four days is granted up to the period of June 12 under the same terms and conditions imposed in the order dated April 29, 2025,' special judge Satyanarayan Navander said in an order passed on June 2. A fire had broken out at the ED Mumbai Zonal office-I on the fourth floor of the Kaiser-I-Hind building in Ballard Estate around 2.25 am on April 27. The fire had been doused in over an hour, suspected to have been caused due to a short circuit. The ED in a statement had then said that certain documents and furniture had been damaged but that evidentiary documents related to investigations were also stored in digital format, therefore no impediment in conducting investigation or trial is expected.

ECI upgrades mechanism for Index Cards on electoral data, replaces manual entry
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Thursday (June 5, 2025) said it had upgraded the mechanism for generating Index Cards, making it more technology-driven. The Index Card is a non-statutory, post-election statistical reporting format that promotes accessibility of election-related data at the constituency-level for all stakeholders, including researchers, academia, and policymakers. This upgraded mechanism replaces the traditional manual methods, which were often time-consuming and prone to delays. By leveraging automation and data integration, the new system ensures faster reporting, the ECI said in a statement. Also Read | Election Commission introduces new tech-driven system for updating voter turnout Earlier, the information was manually filled at the constituency-level, using various statutory formats in physical Index Cards. These physical Index Cards were subsequently used for data entry into the online system to facilitate the generation of Statistical Reports. The manual, multi-layered process was time-consuming and frequently led to delays in data availability and dissemination. Designed to disseminate data across multiple dimensions, including candidates, electors, votes polled, votes counted, party-wise and candidate-wise vote share, gender-based voting patterns, regional variations, and the performance of political parties — the Index Card forms the foundation for generating about 35 Statistical Reports for Lok Sabha elections, and 14 Statistical Reports for State Assembly elections. Also Read | Election Commission's one-point dashboard to become operational before Bihar election These reports cover variables, including State/PC (parliamentary constituency)/AC (Assembly constituency)-wise elector details, number of polling stations, State and constituency-wise voter turnout, participation of women electors, performance of national/State parties and Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs), winning candidates' analyses, detailed constituency-wise results, and summary data reports. The Statistical Reports are meant solely for academic and research purposes, and are based on secondary data from Index Cards, while the primary and final data remains in the statutory forms maintained by the concerned Returning Officers.

GHMC General Council holds discussions on monsoon prep
Hyderabad: The GHMC General Council meeting on Wednesday held detailed discussions on monsoon preparedness and other basic amenities. The 11th meeting was chaired by GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijaylakshmi. During this meeting, the members voiced their outrage at the horrific attack on innocent individuals by terrorists in Pahalgam. The council members extended their heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims of this attack and held a two-minute moment of silence to pray for the peace of the souls who have departed. GHMC Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi has called on both authorities and public representatives to collaborate effectively for the city's progress. Prior to the start of the meeting, the Mayor spoke at the council gathering and stated the Chief Minister has guaranteed that there will be ample funding available for infrastructure and welfare development within GHMC, and she expressed his appreciation for the support given to the development of Baldia through the allocation of funds. The pre-monsoon sanitation initiative aims to clean all streets to prevent seasonal diseases. She stressed the program's large-scale implementation for city cleanliness and urged officials to work with local representatives, MLAs, MLCs, and MPs for its success. Zonal review meetings are addressing public concerns, and decisions have been made to resolve issues raised by corporators. The mayor confirmed that corporators will collaborate with officials on sanitation, de-silting, Nala development, and infrastructure improvements in various zones. The aim is to identify new routes for the approximately 744.22 km of roads designated in CRMP-1 and to transfer the management of a total of 1142.54 km of roads to private agencies for the next five years (2025-2030), while seeking approval for a budget of Rs 3825 crore for this initiative. Furthermore, the corporators from various parties claim that they made plans to remove the officials due to alleged irregularities in the tenders for vehicles intended for use in the monsoon relief efforts. In the meeting, BRS corporators raised concerns about the arrest of Baba Fasiuddin, a Congress member from Borabanda, alleging his involvement in a suicide. They raised slogans and held placards demanding Fasiuddin's arrest. Mayor Gadwal Vijayalakshmi intervened and successfully calmed the upset corporators. She mentioned that a First Information Report (FIR) has been lodged and that the case is currently being investigated. 'The law will take its course, and if the BRS corporators have any additional evidence related to this issue, they are urged to present it to the investigating authorities,' she stated. However, BJP corporators expressed their discontent with the council meeting. During the session, BJP corporators resolved to remove the Mayor over issues related to road maintenance, street lighting upkeep, sanitation, birth certificate processing, entomology, and the construction and upkeep of flood water canals. Other issues discussed were the operation of HYDRA, the status of street lighting, the process for issuing birth and death certificates, the rainwater harvesting pits built by GHMC, the restoration of RTC bus stops, the absence of essential infrastructure in cemeteries, and the painting and beautification projects carried out on flyovers throughout the city.
