Oakmont bans 2023 US Open champion Wyndham Clark for damaging lockers

The Guardian16-07-2025
The former US Open champion Wyndham Clark, who is competing this week at Portrush, has been banned by the prestigious Oakmont Country Club after damaging lockers in a fit of pique during the staging of the event this year.
Oakmont has insisted Clark undergoes anger management help if he wants to be allowed back in to the Pittsburgh venue. The move is as sensational as it is unprecedented towards a player of Clark's standing. The 31-year-old represented the US in the last Ryder Cup.
Photographs emerged of damage inflicted to lockers by Clark during the US Open last month. Clark had attracted attention at the US PGA Championship in May for throwing his driver at a sign during another temper tantrum.
When asked about the US Open incident, Clark said: 'I've had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I'm very sorry for what happened. But I'd also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA [United States Golf Association] and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up.'
Oakmont is clearly unwilling to draw a line under the incident. In a letter to members this week, first obtained by Golf Digest, club president John Lynch outlined Clark's punishment. 'Following multiple discussions with the USGA and the OCC board, a decision has been made that Mr. Clark will no longer be permitted on OCC property,' Lynch said.
'Reinstatement would be contingent upon Mr Clark fulfilling a number of specific conditions, including full repayment for damages, a meaningful contribution to a charity of the board's choosing, and the successful completion of counselling and/or anger management sessions.'
Clark held off Rory McIlroy to win the US Open at Los Angeles Country Club in 2023. His best major finish so far this year is a tie for 46th at the Masters. The US Open will return to Oakmont in 2033. Clark will begin his latest quest for the Open at 10.20am on Thursday in the company of Corey Conners and Tom Hoge.

Fields was brought in to replace Aaron Rodgers, whose own tenure with the Jets was derailed by a torn Achilles tendon on his first offensive drive with the team.

Manny Pacquiao's opponent ready for ‘backlash' if he sends Filipino icon back into retirement

Mario Barrios enters the ring this weekend ready to put a definitive end to Manny Pacquiao 's career and defend his WBC welterweight title. Pacquiao, an eight-division world champion, has faced heavy criticism for making a comeback after a four-year retirement, now 46. If he wins against Barrios, it will make him one of boxing 's oldest world champions ever. But Barrios is not fazed by facing a legend of the sport or any 'backlash' he may receive for forcing Pacquiao back into retirement. Barrios explained to The Ring: 'I'm ready to get backlash if I retire him – it comes with it. Any fighter in my division would be more than happy to take this fight as well. It's just my job to go in there and do what I do best.' In his prime, Pacquiao was affectionately named the 'Mexecutioner' for his impressive record against some of the greatest Mexican fighters of his generation – he claimed wins over Antonio Margarito, Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. Coming from a proud Mexican heritage, Barrios does not plan to be next on the long list of Mexicans to fall at the hands of 'Pac-Man'. Barrios said: 'He's beaten a lot of Mexican fighters before, but he hasn't faced a Mexican fighter like me. Every time I step in the ring, I represent my Mexican roots and indigenous roots very proudly.' The WBC champion added that he is preparing for a prime Pacquiao and is not taking his age or inactivity for granted. Although his intentions are not to go in there to retire an icon like Pacquiao, but he has to defend his belt by any means necessary. Barrios said: 'I'm preparing as if I am fighting a prime Manny. He's a legend for a reason. He's still dangerous. It's my job to go in there and defend my title. I am expecting the best version of many regardless.' He concluded: 'Maybe I am going to be the one who retires him. That's not what my goal is in there. I just want to make sure I go home with my strap. A name like Manny is huge for my resume.'
