Selfish, careless drivers to blame for unending accidents, says IGP
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said the May 13 accident that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit men and other fatal accidents since then have not served as a lesson to some drivers.
PETALING JAYA : Traffic accidents will continue to happen so long as drivers continue to be careless and selfish, says Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.
He said despite the numerous efforts by the authorities and related agencies, including enforcement actions and safety campaigns, the ultimate responsibility still lay with the drivers, Utusan Malaysia reported.
'The government's efforts to reduce traffic accident rates, especially fatal ones, will not succeed if drivers do not obey the law.
'If drivers continue to be careless, selfish and indifferent to the safety of other road users, accidents will continue to happen,' he was quoted as saying.
A fatal crash between a bus and an MPV on the Gerik-Jeli East West Highway this morning resulted in the death of 15 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI).
The 15 were among 42 students on board the bus, along with the bus driver and his assistant. Those in the MPV were a couple, their six-year-old daughter and a three-year-old son.
Thirteen of the UPSI students died at the scene and two at the hospital. Four people were injured.
Razarudin said the accident on May 13 that killed nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) men and other fatal incidents since then have not served as a lesson to some drivers.
'This is not to mention heavy vehicles like lorries and buses that are no longer roadworthy, but continue to be used by certain parties,' he said.

Final farewell for two UPSI students killed in Gerik crash
JERTIH: The remains of two Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students who lost their lives in an accident involving a bus and a multi-purpose vehicle along the East-West Highway, Gerik, arrived in their respective hometowns tonight for final rites and burial. The body of Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, 21, was brought to Masjid Hadhari in Hulu Besut, arriving from Gerik Hospital at about 10.45pm. Nearly 300 individuals — including family members, friends and local residents — gathered to perform funeral prayers led by Imam Mat Jaih Namat. Following the prayers, his remains were taken to the Kampung Pasir Badak Cemetery for burial. The remains of Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, 22, brought from Gerik Hospital, arrived at her family's home at 10.50pm before being taken to Masjid Al-Mukhlisin Kampung Amer, Kampung Raja, Besut around 11.13pm for funeral prayers. Residents, close family members, and friends of the deceased attended to perform the funeral prayers and pay their last respects at the mosque. Meanwhile, the remains of 13 other students who died are now en route from Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital (HRPB), Ipoh, Perak, to Masjid Hadhari for prayers before being buried in their respective hometowns. The convoy of vans carrying the remains of the 13 student victims left the HRPB Forensic Department for Jertih, Terengganu, at 8.55pm and is expected to arrive at Masjid Hadhari at 2am. In the accident that occurred between 12.30am and 1am, 15 UPSI students died after the bus they had chartered from Jertih, Terengganu, to Tanjung Malim, Perak, overturned after being involved in an accident with a Perodua Alza MPV on the JRTB near Tasik Banding, Perak. The accident also resulted in 33 others being injured, including the bus driver and second driver, as well as the Perodua Alza driver and three passengers. - BERNAMA
