New safety systems, electrification projects, mechanised operations, and digital technologies have been introduced, creating job roles that did not exist previously and further increasing the vacancy pool.RECRUITMENT SCALE AND COMPETITIONThe Ministry's data shows recruitment for 1.08 lakh posts is in progress, with 92,116 vacancies already notified in 2024 through 10 Centralised Employment Notifications (CENs).The posts include Assistant Loco Pilots (ALP), Technicians, RPF personnel, junior engineers, paramedical staff, and the highly sought-after Non-Technical Popular Categories (NTPC).Competition for these positions is fierce.RPF Constable posts drew 45,30,288 applications, averaging over 1,076 candidates per vacancy. NTPC (Graduate) roles saw about 720 contenders for each post.Even technical positions received massive interest, with Technician posts attracting roughly 189 applicants per vacancy and ALP posts nearly 98 candidates for every slot.PROGRESS IN THE SELECTION PROCESSFor 55,197 posts, the first stage, Computer-Based Tests (CBTs) — has been completed in four phases across more than 150 cities and in 15 languages. Results for several key categories, including ALP, RPF-SI, Constable, and JE/DMS/CMA, have already been released.The second stage of CBTs for ALP and JE/DMS/CMA has also been completed, with results published.For Technician roles, over 9,000 candidates have already been empanelled out of the 14,298 notified vacancies. The Ministry highlighted that recruitment is often a staggered process, meaning not all vacancies are filled simultaneously, even within the same category.RECRUITMENT PLANS FOR 2025Looking ahead, the recruitment process for 2025 is being guided by the annual calendar introduced in 2024.Two major notifications have already been released: CEN 01/2025 for 9,970 ALP vacancies in March 2025, and CEN 02/2025 for 6,238 Technician posts in June 2025.GROWTH OVER THE YEARSRecruitment numbers have improved over the years. Between 2004 and 2014, the Railways recruited 4.11 lakh personnel. From 2014 to 2025, that figure rose to 5.08 lakh, an increase of nearly one lakh recruitments.This growth has been supported by systemic reforms such as the introduction of an annual recruitment calendar, complete digitisation of tests, and the availability of multi-language CBTs.These measures have made the process more predictable, transparent, and accessible to candidates, with the Ministry noting that it has remained free from paper leaks or malpractices.- Ends

Vodafone Idea's Net Loss Widens To Rs 6,608 Crore In Q1
Mumbai: Vodafone Idea's losses grew in the June 2025 quarter (Q1 FY26) as the telecom operator reported a net loss of Rs 6,608 crore, compared to Rs 6,432 crore in the same period previous fiscal (Q1 FY25). However, the company's revenue from operations rose 5 per cent to Rs 11,023 crore, up from Rs 10,508 crore in the year-ago quarter, according to its stock exchange filing. The company's average revenue per user (ARPU) increased to Rs 177 during the quarter, compared to Rs 154 in Q1 FY25 -- marking a 15 per cent year-on-year (YoY) rise. Its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) stood at Rs 4,612 crore, up 10 per cent from Rs 4,205 crore a year earlier. The EBITDA margin improved to 41.8 per cent from 40 per cent in the same period previous financial year. Vodafone Idea CEO Akshaya Moondra said the quarter marked a decisive turnaround for the company. He noted that investments made in the past three quarters to expand 4G coverage have started showing results, with subscriber losses down 90 per cent compared to Q2 and Q3 of last financial year -- the lowest decline since the merger. "This has been a decisive turnaround quarter. Moondra added that Vodafone Idea is continuing to invest in capital expenditure and, to meet its broader plans of Rs 500–550 billion, is in talks with lenders to secure debt funding.

Biggest IKEA retailer names veteran Juvencio Maeztu CEO as Brodin steps down
By Helen Reid The world's biggest retailer of IKEA furniture said on Wednesday CEO Jesper Brodin was stepping down after eight years, to be succeeded by Spaniard Juvencio Maeztu , the first non-Swede to lead the group. Maeztu takes the top job at Ingka Group as the Swedish retailer grapples with U.S. tariffs, wars and geopolitical tensions that risk disrupting its operations spanning 31 countries from Europe to China, India and the United States. Brodin, CEO since 2017, said his decision to step down was not easy, but that it was the right time to do so. Maeztu is to start in the new role by November 5, with Brodin staying at the company until the end of February to ease the transition. Deputy CEO and chief financial officer since 2018, Maeztu, 57, started at IKEA in 2001 as manager of the Alcorcon store in Madrid, later managing the Wembley store in London, before a six-year stint as CEO of IKEA India. "We've been riding through quite some storms together - pandemic, geopolitical issues, war, etcetera," Brodin, 56, told Reuters. "So in a way I feel proud of the things we have achieved but also super confident that the IKEA house is in good order and we'll be able to take off for the future with Juvencio." Under Brodin, Ingka Group invested heavily to improve online shopping for IKEA, driving the retailer's online sales up. Ingka also set new emissions reduction targets and reported in January that emissions fell by 30.1% from its 2016 baseline. Brodin said the appointment of Maeztu, who grew up in Cadiz and does not speak Swedish, shows IKEA's global culture works. The incoming CEO is setting off on a "listening tour" of its big blue stores around the world, starting in Asia, as he builds his strategy to grow the company which last year reported weaker net profit and revenue after slashing prices. "I am fully determined to make IKEA grow and to really be relevant for many millions more consumers around the world," Maeztu told Reuters. He has said tariffs make it harder for IKEA to keep prices low.
