Ryanair told widow to have dead husband ask for £827 flight refund

Colin was tetraplegic after he had an accident 14 years ago and needed two essential carers to accompany him on the flight, whose tickets he paid for.
A widow was left in tears when Ryanair refused to refund her dead hubby's £827 flights - telling her he needed to complain from beyond the grave.

Yvonne Shields' husband Colin Shields booked his flights to Venice, Italy, last year and was meant to fly out in September to represent Scotland at a powerchair football match. Colin was tetraplegic after he had an accident 14 years ago and needed two essential carers to accompany him on the flight, whose tickets he paid for.

But when Colin tragically passed away due to brain bleed in April 2025, Yvonne contacted Ryanair customer support to notify them and request a refund. The 44-year-old said she was told she could not get a refund for the carers' tickets as it was against Ryanair's policy despite Colin having paid for them.

She was promised a refund of only £258 for his ticket but claims she has not even received that either. When Yvonne got back in touch to chase the refund, she was reportedly told they could not disclose any information unless they speak to the original booker - despite being informed the 'booker is dead'.
The mum said she even provided Ryanair with Colin's death certificate and proof that she is the will executor, but they still refused to speak with her and ended the chat. Ryanair have since apologised for the ordeal and said that she was 'regrettably incorrectly advised wrongly' by their customer service agent.

Yvonne, from Glasgow, said: "He was captain of the Scottish power football team and they were playing against other national teams. He is tetraplegic so he couldn't go by himself and he had two essential carers. He often travelled with carers.
"He booked them through a company, it's not like it's personal carers, we don't know these people. He paid for their tickets too, it was all through him. Colin passed on April 12th and I contacted them in April. I filled out the form to get a refund for Colin and the caters. They authorised part of the refund but they didn't send it.
"I sent the death certificate and proof I am the will executor. They said a refund would come in the next 24-48 hours. They said their policy is to refund only Colin's ticket, not the carers'. But I've not had it, there's nothing.

"I emailed them to say I haven't received the refund and it's been over 48 hours. They said that they have to speak with the booker. My sister contacted them and said the booker is dead. It's so upsetting and trivial. I told them back in April that he passed so there should be no reason why they can't refund it.
"I can't get in contact with these carers because the contract ended, but they didn't pay for the tickets, Colin paid for the tickets. They said 'I can't disclose any information with someone not tied to the booking', even though they were discussing it with me in the past.
"They said 'we would need the passengers to contact us to process', but I don't have passengers to contact. They said there's nothing else we can help you with and ended the chat."

Yvonne said the lack of empathy and understanding from Ryanair is frustrating and caused her to burst into tears. The mum-of-two said it is a lot for her to deal with while also handling grief and feels like she is 'bashing her head on a brick wall.'
Yvonne said: "I burst into tears because I have quite a lot to deal with right now since Colin passed. It's a lot. It's not like you're getting this clean slate to start again. I constantly have to deal with things.

"I've got two kids as well, 14 and 17, and it's dealing with their emotions as well. The fact they're not even giving me the money back is infuriating. It's like bashing your head on a brick wall. They're trying to speak to someone that isn't here, it's an unreasonable request.
"It's frustrating, it's devastating, you feel like you're nothing. We've dealt with so much because of his disability. Things are always that little bit tougher, harder."
Colin was paralysed from the chest down after an accident in 2010 and developed a condition called autonomic dysreflexia, which meant his blood pressure could soar and cause a stroke if not treated - which is what led to his brain bleed.

Yvonne said: "Colin had an accident 14 years ago, a month before our youngest was born. It's just constant battling and I feel tired, I feel drained, sometimes I want to just ignore it but my sister says 'you're not ignoring this, they stole from you.'
"It's the lack of empathy, lack of understanding, it's not a box-standard person going on a flight, it's a disabled person. If you had a family member who died, surely you would think it's all cancelled."
A Ryanair spokesperson said: "Mr Shields was due to travel from Edinburgh to Venice on 16 Sep' 25 but passed away prior to this flight. Mrs Shields attempted to submit a refund request (26 Apr) and was advised to submit a death cert and proof of executorship.
"On 30 Jun, Mrs Shields was informed that a refund (£257.58) was issued and was regrettably incorrectly advised by a customer service agent who wrongly believed that the other two passengers on the booking were not entitled to a refund. Our Customer Service Department would be happy to further assist this passenger to correct this customer service agent's error and assist this passenger with their refund."
Ryanair admitted that the customer service agent also incorrectly informed Yvonne that the refund of £257.58 would be sent to her husband's Ryanair wallet, instead of the card used to pay for the booking.

Vile beast branded "predator of the most dangerous and deviant sort"

Twisted David Cardona was yesterday described as 'a predator of the most dangerous and devious sort'. A Paisley beast has been jailed for five years after being found guilty of 'orchestrated and persistent' child sex abuse spanning over two decades. ‌ Twisted David Cardona was last month found guilty by a jury, following a trial at Paisley Sheriff Court, of the abuse of three youngsters. ‌ The jury found the 65-year-old unanimously guilty of using 'lewd, indecent and libidinous practices and behaviour' towards a boy aged under 13 between October 21, 1994 and October 23, 1994. ‌ Creepy Cardona got into the boy's bed while he was sleeping, laid next to him, attempted to pull his trousers down and, thereafter, performed a sex act on him. Cardona, of Westburn Avenue in the town, was also found guilty of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 16 on 'various occasions' between July 11, 2013 and August 20, 2018 by touching her private parts through her clothing. The court heard evidence Cardona would carry out these sexual assaults when the girl was sleeping or falling asleep. ‌ A witness told the jury: 'It was at night, he would lift her but place his hands at her pants.' The witness told the court how this had impacted the girl and added: 'When she told me, she was in pieces, she was crying; crying as if she was having a panic attack. 'After it happened, she distanced herself from him. ‌ 'It changed her, she stayed in her room after it happened, her hair would fall out, she started cutting her wrists.' Cardona was also found guilty of sexually assaulting another girl while she was under the age of 13. Between August 2019 and August 2021, the paedophile on 'various occasions' assaulted this youngster by placing his hand inside her trousers and sexually assaulting her. ‌ Yesterday, Sheriff Gillian Craig slammed Cardona stating: 'You are a predator of the most dangerous and devious sort. 'These offences are in a league of very serious crime. 'Your victims have already lived with the trauma and may live with the trauma for the rest of their lives. ‌ 'I've read the victim impact statements and what is clear is the impact is devastating, you robbed these children of their childhood.' Defence agent, Paul Keenan KC told the court there was 'little he could say in mitigation'. He added: 'Mr Cardona maintains he is innocent, he understands the jury's verdict and rejects that position. ‌ 'He is under no illusion of the severity and fully accepts the offences he's convicted of are exceptionally serious and there will ne no choice but to impose a custodial sentence.' Sentencing, Sheriff Craig added: 'I commend all of the victims for their bravery in coming to police. 'The ripples of what you've done will be felt through their families and loved ones. ‌ 'A custodial sentence is the only appropriate disposal.' Cardona was jailed for five years and, upon his release, he will be subject to licence for three years with conditions fixed by Scottish ministers. In addition, he was made subject to a non-harassment order for each of the three victims for 20 years and made subject to a sexual harm prevention order also for twenty years.

Edinburgh Fringe performer claims youths branded him a 'lady boy' during attack

Eddie Jen claims the male youths "beat him on the head", ripped off his bow and poured their drinks on him. An Edinburgh Fringe performer has claimed he was called a 'lady boy' by youths who allegedly attacked him on the Royal Mile. ‌ Eddie Jen, who uses he/she pronouns, is performing his show 'Seeking a PenPal For the End of the World' to the festival this year. ‌ Before it starts he was out handing out flyers but says he was accosted by a gang of thugs on Tuesday, July 29, reports Edinburgh Live. ‌ Eddie claims the male youths "beat him on the head", ripped off his bow and poured their drinks on him. Speaking out since the incident, Eddie said "it all happened so quickly". He added: "I was just so excited and happy to be in Edinburgh and to start with, I got great reactions. The youngsters aren't even a minority and they aren't speaking for everyone. ‌ "It all happened so quickly, they just came up to me and started saying 'are you a lady boy?' and 'are you a boy or a girl?' "I remained polite but as I went back to my corner to continue flyering, they hit my head, ripped off my bow and poured their drinks over me. It all happened within two minutes. ‌ "I was honestly in shock but I am so glad I was able to film it all and get people talking about this." The performer from San Francisco said she isn't letting the incident dampen her time in Edinburgh. Eddie has met a lot of kind people in the capital - including one man who assisted after the incident. She added: "There was one kind Scottish gentleman who came up to me to see if I was okay. ‌ "I really am an optimist and I am able to get the full Fringe experience right now. I mean so far, I have been harassed and done shows with no attendance so it seems I am getting everything bad out the way in the first week. "Last year I came to the Fringe to see if I was up to par and I absolutely loved it - the city is magical, there really is something about it. "I went out flyering again yesterday, I put on the same outfit and I kept going. I am just so excited to be here." ‌ Getting over 200,000 views, the clip has since gone viral and many people have offered their support to the performer. The video was captioned: "I was attacked in drag at Edinburgh Fringe 2025. It's my first solo show. "I was so excited to flyer and find an audience and then a group of young men began harassing me. They beat me on the head, ripped off my bow and poured their drinks on me." ‌ Almost 1000 comments have come in after the short clip was posted online. One person said: "Why is it always teenagers? Where are their parents? "I'm terrified of teenage boys in Edinburgh, they're just looking for trouble." A second said: "That's so bad a member of the public has to explain this is not how Scotland is and excusing their bad behaviour." ‌ "I'm so sorry this happened to you. I live in Edinburgh and unfortunately this type of stuff happens a lot. It's horrible but not all teenagers are like that", a third commented. Eddie's show started yesterday and will run at Just The Tonic at the Caves at 1.05pm until August 24. A description of the show reads: "After Trump 1.0's mob breached the US capitol to destroy democracy on January 6th, 2021, an immigrant drag queen attorney from San Francisco began writing to a retired, White, Republican woman in Bountiful, Utah – his high school English teacher from thirty years ago. "What happens when the political discussions stop and the personal begins? Can you really be friends with your former teacher? An interactive performance, with reading and writing prompts. We tell the story of our lives. For everyone who remembers their English teachers most fondly. You can find out more about Eddie's show here.
