Purdue football's defensive line makeover continues with a Canadian transfer
Purdue football again dipped below the FBS level to bolster its trenches via the transfer portal.
Elijah St. John, defensive tackle from FCS program Long Island University, committed to the Boilermakers on Thursday. The Canadian native retains three seasons of eligibility after a highly productive freshman season at that level.
St. John collected 40 tackles with one sack and two forced fumbles while starting all 12 games. The 6-foot-1, 275-pound alum of Clearwater (Florida) Academy International turned himself into a transfer portal prospect after going unranked in the 247Sports national composite for the 2023 class.

St. John became the sixth incoming transfer either at defensive tackle or edge rusher. Others added from outside the FBS umbrella include Fort Valley State's Josh Burney and Monmouth's Miles Mitchell.
He joins offensive lineman Giordano Vaccaro as Canadians who came to the Boilermakers via Clearwater Academy International.

Since mid-February, Conners has finished 30th or better in 10 of 11 tournaments he's entered. Jordan Spieth, who is slightly favored to finish ahead of Conners this weekend at Oakmont, has been more of a wild card of late. He's missed the cut just twice this year, but Spieth has finished outside the top-30 in four additional tournaments, suggesting he's having a hard time putting four solid rounds together. Conners has finished ahead of Spieth in both majors this season. Look for the up-and-comer to do it again this weekend. Over his past three tournaments, Griffin has won the Charles Schwab Challenge, finished second at the Memorial, and finished T-8 at the PGA Championship. He's a big underdog to beat out Shane Lowry this weekend, despite playing as well as anyone in the field. Lowry has enjoyed a strong season, with two runner-up finishes and two additional top-10s, but he's struggled during the majors, finishing T-42 at Augusta and missing the cut during the PGA Championship. The Irishman is a much more familiar name to the average golf fan, but Griffin is the hot hand to ride in this matchup. 'Not everybody is marketable.' Purdue coach Matt Painter welcomes 'balance' House settlement brings
WEST LAFAYETTE — The financial allotment for college athletes went from one extreme (legally nonexistent) to another when the NCAA instituted name, image, and likeness (NIL), allowing student-athletes to capitalize on their marketability. The rich, essentially, got richer. On Friday, a nearly half decade battle through the court system concluded with the House vs. NCAA settlement which will allow schools to pay their athletes directly. Purdue athletic director Mike Bobinski stated previously Purdue would be a full participant up to the cap limit, estimated at $20.5 million. After Purdue basketball had its first summer practice on Monday, coach Matt Painter, who currently serves as third vice president on the National Association of Basketball Coaches board of directors, was asked if college basketball got better based on the ruling. "Some competitive balance is all we really want," Painter said. "It wasn't name, image and likeness before. This gives you more of a grasp of having a core amount of money to pay these guys, which is a lot less than the money that's going on right now. And then, anything on top of it is real name, image and likeness." The idea behind name, image, and likeness was for college athletes to capitalize on their notoriety via avenues such as autograph signings, hosting sports camps, or appearing in advertisements, for example. Painter mentioned specifically from his own program since NIL went into effect the names of two-time National Player of the Year Zach Edey, selected ninth overall in last year's NBA draft, and Braden Smith, the reigning Big Ten Player of the Year and Bob Cousy Award winner for the nation's top point guard, as marketable athletes who fit the supposed NIL idea.
