Celtic tipped to sign Hearts star before he's even kicked a ball as former Rangers man tells rivals what they want to hear

Andrei Kanchelskis believes Celtic are the ultimate goal for anyone coming to Scotland
Islam Chesnokov has been tipped for a future move to Celtic – before he's even kicked a ball for Hearts.
It comes from former Rangers star Andrei Kanchelskis who believes the Hoops are ahead of his old club by a 'wide margin' – which makes them the ultimate goal for anyone coming to Scotland.

Hearts have agreed a pre-contract deal with Kazakhstan international Chesnokov, but are trying to do a deal with his club FC Tobol to land him before then.

Kanchelskis, who won 59 caps for the Soviet Union, the CIS and Russia, was at Ibrox for four years from 1998 and ended up winning six major trophies with Rangers.
He's now in charge of Russian second tier outfit Dynamo Bryansk and was asked about why Chesnokov has opted to move to Hearts instead of going to Russia, where there was plenty of interest in him.
Kanchelskis explained: "The Scottish league is quite high level and there is a lot of quality there. It's a very physical league. But the problem is this is only a league with two teams - Celtic and Rangers. And Celtic are leading by a wide margin.
"Another five or six, including Hearts, are fighting for places in the European competitions. But the main advantage for Islam Chesnokov of moving to Scotland is the opportunity to be noticed by Celtic or English clubs and eventually sign for them. This is an opportunity for progress.
"Yes, the level of the Russian Premier League is clearly higher than in Scotland, but there's no Europe for him there and no one will notice him in Russia.

"So if it was me, I would have done what Islam did and moved to Scotland too."

Here is your Sunday transfer bulletin as Celtic line up a fourth summer signing, Rangers welcome back a surprise name, the latest on Lawrence Shankland plus a new club for Leigh Griffiths... Next Celtic signing 'agreed' Brendan Rodgers has already added three new faces to his Celtic squad so far this summer - and a fourth is on the way. That is according to a Japanese news outlet which claims that lbirex Niigata defender Hayato Inamura has agreed a move to Scottish champions. Sponichi state that Inamura played his final game for his current club against Machida Zelvia on Sunday, a match which ended in a 4-0 defeat, and will now fly to Scotland this coming week to seal a move to Parkhead. The 23-year-old, who can play left-sided centre back and left back, is renowned for his set pieces. If the deal goes through, Inamura will join Kieran Tierney, Ross Doohan and Benjamin Nygren as fresh additions to the Celtic ranks this summer. New Hearts boss Derek McInnes was hoping for a positive resolution which would have allowed the 29-year-old striker to join up with his teammates for a pre-season training camp in Spain. However, the flight took off on Saturday without Shankland on board amid reports that talks had broken down due to a marginal difference between what the Tynecastle club were offering and the Scotland international's demands. However, while Hearts are said to be standing firm, sister title Edinburgh Evening News claim that lines of communication remain open between club and player at this time, although Shankland is also understood to be exploring other options, with teams in England and Saudi Arabia showing an interest. Jose Cifuentes is set to return to Rangers after confirming his exit from Aris. | Getty Images Surprise Rangers return Russell Martin is set to welcome a forgotten name back into his Rangers squad with midfielder Jose Cifuentes returning from a loan spell with Aris Thessaloniki. It appeared the Ecuadorian's time at Ibrox was up when he joined the Greek outfit last summer on a season-long loan deal which included an option to buy. Aris had been expected to trigger this option given Cifuentes made 29 league appearances for them and helped them qualify for Europe. However, they could not afford the £3million asking price and opted against another loan. Cifuentes has now confirmed that his time in Greece is over with the former Los Angeles FC man now set to return to Ibrox, where he has two more years left on his deal. Whether he can force his way into Martin's plans, however, remains to be seen. "Thank you Aris," the 26-year-old posted on Instagram. To teammates, coaching staff, fans and club staff, it was a pleasure to spend the season with you, a season full of challenges, which has now come to an end, From my family and I, we thank you for everything we have experienced and we wish you the best for the new season." Griffiths on the move Former Celtic and Scotland striker Leigh Griffiths has signed for a new club. The 34-year-old, who scored 123 goals for the Hoops in 261 appearances, has spent the last three years playing for semi-professional outfit Mandurah City in Western Australia. Griffiths, who also netted four times in 22 Scotland caps, quit Scottish football in the summer of 2022 for a new life Down Under following a brief spell at Falkirk, which followed his release from Parkhead. He has now signed for Stirling Macedonia Lions of the National Premier Leagues, which operates on a regional structure beneath the A-League, the top flight of Australian Football. The club is based in Perth, Western Australia and finished fourth in the league last year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad

Ex-Rangers star Nikola Katic to join German giants in shock cut-price transfer

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IT wasn't too long ago that sections of the Rangers support were clamouring for Nikola Katic to return. But while the imposing defender is on the move once again, it certainly WON'T be to Ibrox. Signed from Croatian club Slaven Belupo, he went on to spend four years with the Light Blues. While there were some major highs - including a memorable Old Firm winner at Celtic Park - his time at Ibrox was blighted by injury. In July 2020, Katic suffered a serious knee injury that kept him out for more than a year. It meant he missed the entire season as the Gers won the Scottish Premiership title in 2021. His Light Blues career would never recover from the injury and he spent the 2021/22 season on loan at Hajduk Split. After briefly returning to Rangers, he was on the move permanently in August 2022. Katic joined FC Zurich where he would enjoy a successful stint. He returned to the UK in January this year, joining Plymouth Argyle on loan until the end of the season. Katic became a fans' favourite at Home Park but he couldn't prevent the club being relegated to League One. Rangers stars Borna Barisic and Nikola Katic followed by film crew in Glasgow city centre He played a memorable role in Plymouth's shock 1-0 FA Cup triumph over Liverpool, losing a tooth during the bruising encounter. Fast forward to now, and Katic is on the move again. Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg is reporting that there's a full agreement for Katic to join Schalke. He claims the deal will be signed and sealed on Tuesday with a contract running until 2028. While Schalke are one of Germany's biggest clubs, they're a fallen giant these days. They were relegated from the Bundesliga in 2023 and mounting financial trouble saw them flirt with potential demotion to either the third or fourth tier. 4 In the end, they kept their place in the 2. Bundesliga and finished 14th last season. This summer, Schalke hired Miron Muslic as their new manager. He was the manager who signed Katic for Plymouth last season and clearly liked what he saw. Katic, capped eight times for Bosnia and Herzegovina, is heading to Germany for a very modest fee indeed. Plettenberg says he'll be moving for just 450,000 Euros which is a fee of just over £384,000. New Ground full throttle towards Grand Prix de Paris test

Trained in France by Henri-Francois Devin, the New Bay colt faced a huge rise in class for the premier Classic at Epsom, but justified the decision of owner-breeders Juddmonte to supplement him with an excellent effort in defeat. The three-year-old now has the opportunity to prove that performance was no fluke, with an appearance at ParisLongchamp on July 13 on the agenda. Barry Mahon, Juddmonte's European racing manager, said: 'New Ground is in the Grand Prix de Paris and he's in the German Derby. We'll look at both, but it feels like the Grand Prix de Paris is probably the plan for him. 'He's a good horse, I think Henri always felt he was very talented and we knew a step up to a mile and a half was going to suit. 'I thought given how he behaved in the preliminaries, he ran an unbelievably good race as he got very warm and very excited, but he came home well. 'I think we're heading towards the Grand Prix de Paris and hopefully he'll run a good race there.'
