Edmonton Oilers' Corey Perry, 40, Ties NHL Playoff Record With Four Hockey Hall Of Famers
Edmonton Oilers right winger Corey Perry continues to make his mark this post-season.
The veteran recorded two points in Edmonton's 4-1 win over the Dallas Stars in Tuesday night's Game 4, which gives the Oilers a 3-1 lead in the Western Conference final.
Both points were on the man advantage, beginning with a secondary assist on Leon Draisaitl's opening goal.
Later in the game, he took an interference penalty that resulted in the Stars equalizing. But less than three minutes after Jason Robertson made it a 1-1 game, Perry avenged the penalty with a power-play marker of his own.
Perry's six goals tied defenseman Evan Bouchard for the second-most on the Oilers this post-season. He also joined elite company in NHL history.
Perry, 40, tied four Hockey Hall of Famers for the most goals in a single post-season by players aged 39 or older. He's equalled Teemu Selanne in 2011, Mark Recchi in 2010, Ron Francis in 2002 and Jean Beliveau in 1971.
'There's ups and downs in a game, in a series, at any time,' Perry told Sportsnet's Gene Principe post-game. 'I was trying to get to the bench on that penalty, (the referees) thought I was setting a pick, it is what it is. It was nice to see that one go in and get that power play going again.'
Edmonton's power play ended up being the difference in this game. The Oilers went 2-for-3 on the man advantage on Tuesday, improving their power-play percentage in this series to 35.7 percent.
'Our PP came through tonight,' Perry told Sportsnet's Gene Principe post-game. 'Those were some big goals at crucial times in a hockey game.'
Perry took on a big role on the Oilers' first line after Zach Hyman left the game with an injury in the first period. Perry finished the game with 16:51 of ice time, the most in a game that didn't go to overtime for him in these playoffs.
This isn't the first time Perry made history in these playoffs related to his age, either. Against the Vegas Golden Knights, he became the oldest player in Edmonton Oilers history to have a multi-goal game.
Perry is also now one win away from playing in the Stanley Cup final for the sixth time in his 20-year career. He would be the 78th player in NHL history to accomplish that if the Oilers advance to the final.
The veteran does not have a contract for next season. However, he has not made any comments or hints at retiring, and his production suggests he has more to give.

Stars coach Peter DeBoer under fire for controversial decision in season-ending loss to Oilers
This attempt at a spark fizzled out, and instead, Stars coach Peter DeBoer is now under the microscope. DeBoer shockingly benched starting goalie Jake Oettinger roughly seven minutes into a win-or-go-home Game 5 for Dallas on Thursday night after the Oilers scored two quick goals. The controversial move did not provide the desired result — Jeff Skinner netted a goal less than a minute later against backup Casey DeSmith — and the Stars were ousted from the Western Conference Final in a 6-3 defeat. 4 Peter DeBoer's gamble backfired. Getty Images DeSmith did not galvanize the team in his second appearance of this postseason, and Dallas has now lost in three straight conference finals under DeBoer, including back-to-back years against Edmonton. 'I didn't take that lightly and I didn't blame it all on Jake,'' DeBoer said. 'But the reality is, if you go back to last year's playoffs, he's lost six of seven games to Edmonton, and we gave up two goals on two shots in an elimination game. So it was partly to spark our team and partly knowing that the status quo had not been working. That's a pretty big sample size.' Oettinger did not play well entering Game 5 and did little to inspire confidence by yielding two early goals, but pulling your starting goalie less than halfway into a potential elimination game is still a jarring move. Edmonton scored 2:31 and 7:09 into the game to grab a 2-0 edge, although both goals did not fall strictly on his shoulders due to the scores coming on a power play and a breakaway. The goalie stopped just 93 of 109 shots (.853) in the series after posting a save percentage of .909 during the regular season and playing well in series wins over the Avalanche and Jets. Oettinger stopped 90.1 percent of shots in last year's six-game series loss to Edmonton. 4 Casey DeSmith couldn't save the Stars' season. Getty Images 'It's unacceptable for us to hang him out like that,' Stars wing Jason Robertson said regarding Oettinger, per The Athletic. 'The whole playoffs, he's been our guy, the whole season. Just unacceptable from us.' Make it all the more shocking is that DeBoer went with a cold goalie in DeSmith, who had last played more than a month ago on April 26 to close out a 4-0 loss to Colorado in Game 4 of that first-round series. DeSmith yielded three goals on 20 shots, the latter two coming after Dallas had twice cut Edmonton's lead to one. 4 Jake Oettinger had a rough series. Getty Images ESPN announcer Sean McDonagh flatly said on the broadcast he disagreed with the maneuver, while analyst Ray Ferraro said he agreed with the move. 'He is your guy, but you can't stand here and do the same thing,' Ferraro said. 'You need to jolt your team. Somehow, you have to jolt them. You can only call a timeout, you can only change the line so often.' Some labeled the move as one of panic and desperation, and that it backfired raises questions about DeBoer's future in Dallas. While the team has reached the conference finals in all three of his seasons, it's fair to wonder if he's the right man to get the team to the Stanley Cup Final. DeBoer is now 2-6 in the conference finals, including six straight losses in the round. 'I think it's possible to be two things at the same time. I'm really proud of the resiliency of our group through the first two rounds … and I'm also disappointed that we didn't find another level, another gear here, another way,' DeBoer said. 'I think our group needs to go, coaches, players, and reflect in the summer what we can do better when we get to this point against the best teams. 'But there's no doubt the two best teams are playing for the Cup.'

NHL Stanley Cup 2025: Oilers' win over Stars sets up rematch against Panthers
This year, the Stanley Cup Final will look familiar, as the Edmonton Oilers face off against the Florida Panthers for the second straight year. The 2024 Final rematch will begin Wednesday in what is likely to be another exciting series. Edmonton secured its 2025 Final appearance with a 6-3 win over the Dallas Stars on Thursday, icing a 4-1 series win and the Western Conference championship. The victory set up a rematch against Florida, which picked up its own 4-1 series win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday. Advertisement As the Oilers chase their first Stanley Cup since 1990, their final obstacle will once again be the Panthers, who defeated Edmonton in a thrilling series in 2024. Florida went up 3-0 in the series before Edmonton went on a run to force a Game 7; the Panthers staved off a historic collapse with a 2-1 victory over the Oilers to earn the franchise's first title. It's been more than 30 years since a Canadian team has won the Stanley Cup — and the Oilers, out for revenge, have extra motivation to break that drought. Edmonton will also open the series as a slight betting favorite over the Panthers. Hockey superstitions may also come into play here. After not touching the Clarence S. Campbell trophy last year and subsequently losing the Finals, Oilers captain Connor McDavid grabbed it right away this year — opening the hope that Edmonton's luck might change. Both teams have been on strong postseason runs heading into the rematch. Florida kicked off the playoffs with a 4-1 series win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, before dashing the Toronto Maple Leafs' postseason dreams with a 6-1 Game 7 victory.
