Auburn looking to flip 2026 five-star EDGE Tank Jones from Oregon

USA Today2 days ago
The rivalry between the Auburn Tigers and the Alabama Crimson Tide does not end with the annual Iron Bowl each November. The fans keep the fire of the rivalry going, but the two compete elsewhere as well.
The two programs are constantly battling for recruits to enhance their rosters. According to Rivals on Friday, both Auburn and Alabama are attempting to flip 2026 EDGE rusher Tank Jones.
Jones is ranked by Rivals as a five-star, and a high four-star by 247Sports. He attends St. Paul's in Mobile, Alabama where he is looking to have a big senior season for the Saints. They went 9-3 last season with their season ending with a 44-6 loss to Pike Road in the AHSAA 6A State Playoffs. Jones led a defense that only allowed 12 points per game and had three shutouts. For Jones, he had 84 tackles with 18 tackles for loss and 16 sacks. He is a multi-sport athlete playing basketball and running track.
Jones committed to Oregon on July 31, but in the world of recruiting nothing is final until the letter of intent is signed. Teams will attempt to make a big push for Jones in an attempt to flip the pass rusher. It would appear that Alabama may have an edge over Auburn for Jones. Before he made his commitment to the Ducks, Jones had announced his top three that included Alabama and Texas A&M. That is not to say Auburn cannot win over Jones though. Hugh Freeze and staff have shown they can beat Alabama in recruiting during their short time at Auburn.

Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia

College Football Auburn Formally Retiring QB Cam Newton's No. 2 Jersey During Game vs. Georgia Published Aug. 18, 2025 2:36 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Auburn will retire 2010 Heisman Trophy winner Cam Newton's No. 2 jersey this fall, making him the fourth player in program history to receive the honor. The ceremony will take place during Auburn's home game against rival Georgia on Oct. 11. Newton will join Pat Sullivan (No. 7), Bo Jackson (No. 34) and Terry Beasley (No. 88) as former Tigers football players whose numbers have been formally retired. The jerseys of Sullivan and Beasley were retired following Sullivan's 1971 Heisman Trophy season, and Jackson's number was retired as part of Auburn's football centennial celebration in 1992. No one has worn No. 2 at Auburn since Newton and the Tigers beat Oregon in the Bowl Championship Series national title game for the 2010 season. But soon it will be officially out of service. "Auburn will always be home to me," Newton said in a statement. "The national championship we won in 2010 was a special moment, and to have my jersey retired ... is an incredible honor that I'll cherish forever. War Eagle!" One of the most decorated players in Auburn and SEC history, Newton led Auburn to conference and national titles with a perfect 14-0 record. He threw for 2,854 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for 1,473 yards and 20 more scores. He became the first player in SEC history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. ADVERTISEMENT "Cam Newton not only led Auburn to a national championship in 2010, but he produced one of the most prolific seasons ever by a college football player," Auburn athletic director John Cohen said. "Retiring Cam's jersey number is a fitting way to celebrate his lasting impact on Auburn University and Auburn Athletics for all time." Reporting by The Associated Press. Alabama higher in USA TODAY Sports preseason college football rankings than top 25 polls

One national outlet is slightly higher on the Alabama Crimson Tide entering the 2025 college football season than the coaches who make up the US LBM Coaches Poll and the various sportswriters and broadcasters who make up the AP Top 25 poll. Alabama was ranked No. 8 in both the preseason Coaches Poll on Aug. 4, as well as the AP Top 25 poll released on Aug. 11. Among SEC teams, Alabama placed third behind the top-ranked Texas Longhorns and the Georgia Bulldogs. Kirby Smart's team was No. 4 in the Coaches Poll and No. 6 in the AP poll. On Monday, USA TODAY Sports unveiled its own preseason rankings (re-rank) of all 136 FBS programs ahead of 2025. Alabama checked at No. 7 in longtime college football analyst Paul Myerberg's hierarchy of teams, one spot higher than its ranking in the preseason top 25 polls. While Texas and Georgia were both still ahead of the Crimson Tide in USA TODAY Sports' rankings entering coach Kalen DeBoer's second season in Tuscaloosa, Alabama placed ahead of one team that landed ahead of them in the preseason polls: the Oregon Ducks. The LSU Tigers, who Alabama edged by one spot in the preseason polls, were still the next highest-ranked SEC team, though they were a few spots lower in USA TODAY Sports' full rankings of all 136 FBS teams entering 2025. Here's a look at the top 25 college football teams entering the 2025 season, as ranked by USA TODAY Sports. Clock ticking for Arizona Cardinals with cutdown deadline eight days away

Howard Balzer goes through each position, breaking them down by likelihood of making the roster. All NFL teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 1 p.m. Arizona time on August 26. For the Arizona Cardinals, several decisions will be impacted by injured players, including those currently on the active/physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Any players placed on reserve/PUP at the cutdown must miss at least the first four games of the season and can't practice while on reserve. With 91 players currently on the roster, there will likely be several reductions made prior to the 26th. That total includes international player, tackle Roy Mbaeteka, who could be the team's 17th player on the practice squad. The waiver period ends earlier than normal after the cut to 53, which is 9 a.m. Arizona time Aug. 27, rather than 1 pm. Practice squad spots can then be filled once players clear waivers. All teams can have six veterans on the practice squad. Those players aren't part of the waiver system as their contracts are immediately terminated. Here is a look at the Cardinals' current roster. It's not a prediction of the 53, but rather the 40 position players considered safe and 17 hoping to survive cutdown day, knowing that there will be roster churn after cutdown day. Many in the 'maybe, maybe not' category will end up on the practice squad. It should never be called the 'final' cut. Wide receivers Tight ends Offensive lineman There are tough choices here with the severity of knee injuries to Conner and Jones unknown. Running backs Quarterbacks If Tune is waived, will the Cardinals sign him to the practice squad. They did last year with Desmond Ridder. Total: 20 rock solid, 7 maybe, maybe not, 3 injured Defensive linemen Jones has been sidelined by a knee injury, while Nichols and Nolen have yet to practice during training camp. Linebackers Defensive backs One of the more intriguing battles is between Crawford and Blount. They both deserve to be on the roster because of their special-teams prowess. Total: 20 rock solid, 10 maybe, maybe not, 4 injured Specialists Overall total: 43 rock solid, 17 maybe, maybe not, 7 injured Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast.
