In diving into the friendship between Clark and Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton in an ESPN story by Ramona Shelburne, Bird ended up being a fun footnote. The C's legend did whatever he could to beat an old rival during the 2009 WNBA playoffs.

Shelburne dug up an old story where the Fever played the Detroit Shock in the 2009 WNBA East Finals. Bird was the Pacers' president of basketball operations at the time. While he supported the Fever, there was another layer to the series: the Shock were coached by former Pistons big man Rick Mahorn. But, notably, before Mahorn was the interim coach for that year, Detroit was actually coached by Bill Laimbeer, who resigned three games into the season. And, well, Bird and Laimbeer's longtime hatred is well-documented from decades ago.
Former Fever president Kelly Krauskopf told Shelburne that Bird would say to her, 'I'm always here if you need anything.' Bird stuck to his word when Krauskopf asked for his help before Game 3 of the East Finals against the Shock. Bird called Pacers CEO Rick Fuson because he 'wanted to buy up all the empty seats in the upper bowl and then give them away the next morning.' Plus, Krauskopf asked Bird for a pregame speech.
'He gave quite the inspirational speech that morning,' Krauskopf told ESPN. 'It's not suitable to repeat, but it was personal. And they felt it.'
Still, while Laimbeer was no longer the Shock coach by the 2009 WNBA playoffs, he had plenty of influence on the organization at the time. He won three WNBA titles in 2003, 2006 and 2008. Plus, the Shock eliminated the Fever in the 2008 WNBA playoffs, so Bird likely didn't want a repeat in 2009.

Bird and Laimbeer's longtime rivalry is well-documented from the 1980s. The Celtics and Pistons met in the East playoffs frequently. While Boston had the edge early on, the 'Bad Boy' Pistons got the better of them at the end of the decade. Those series included altercations between Bird and Laimbeer, so, it's no surprise that Bird was perhaps a bit fired up to beat the Shock back in 2009.

Austin Reaves is on arguably the best contract in the NBA. The 20-point-a-game scorer last season for the Lakers will make $13.9 million — less than the full midlevel exception — this season, the third year of his four-year, $53.8 million contract. Next summer, Reaves is expected to use his player option to become a free agent — and the man is going to get paid. Reaves' ability to shoot the rock (37.7% on 3-pointers last season, 39.9% on catch-and-shoot attempts), play off the ball or on, makes him an ideal fit next to Doncic. However, there are questions that this season is going to answer about Reaves and his fit with the team. One is the playoffs, where Reaves struggled against the athletic Timberwolves defense, scoring 16.2 points and 3.6 assists per game while shooting just 41.1% overall and 31.9% from beyond the arc — now he needs to prove that was a fluke. While he's improved on that end, Reaves remains a minus defender, which is tough to put next to Doncic for long stretches (especially in the playoffs). That said, look at the guards making around $30 million a season right now — Jalen Suggs, Tyler Herro, Jordan Poole, Dejounte Murray — and Reaves slots in nicely with that group. A deal in the four-year, $120 million range sounds about right. If the Lakers don't want to pay it, other teams will. But the Lakers will pay it. Expect Los Angeles and Reaves to work out a deal, although he could be a late official signing as the Lakers use their expected cap space (depending on what happens with LeBron James' future with the team) to build out the roster they want around Doncic, then use their Bird rights to re-sign Reaves. That said, the deal will get done.

To address this, the Purple and Gold may need to make a few more moves to reinforce their overall roster strength. It is also important to keep a roster spot open for a potential midseason buyout signing. Thus, we look at two moves the Lakers should make to ensure their offseason efforts result in success during the regular season. Trade For Robert Williams III The Lakers' biggest issue heading into the offseason was their lack of a big man rotation. Although they addressed it by signing Ayton and re-signing Hayes, the team could still use another reliable big man. Proposed Trade Details Los Angeles Lakers Receive: Robert Williams III Portland Trail Blazers Receive: Dalton Knecht, Maxi Kleber Dalton Knecht and Maxi Kleber have been the primary assets mentioned in recent Lakers trade rumors. Knecht has garnered some interest due to his potential as a sharpshooter and scoring ability. Meanwhile, Kleber's $11.0 expiring contract could be viewed favorably by a team like the Portland Trail Blazers. This deal is aligned with the team's needs. Robert Williams III could prove to be a tremendous backup center to Ayton, should the Lakers succeed in acquiring him. The 27-year-old has all the makings of a key rotational center. The biggest concern with this trade is his injury-prone nature. When considering that he has only played in a total of 26 games over the last two seasons, the Lakers could be taking a risk by acquiring him. Sign Kevin Love In The Event Of A Buyout By completing the trade for Robert Williams III, the Lakers would effectively clear up two roster spots, allowing them to make one more signing before starting the season. In this event, signing Kevin Love could be in their best interests. Love was traded from the Miami Heat to the Utah Jazz this offseason. The speculation is that the Jazz will buy out Love's contract soon, making him a free agent. Love brings a lot of veteran leadership and championship experience to the team. This could be quite valuable for the Lakers as they prepare to mount a title charge in the upcoming season. Can The Lakers Contend For The Title? The Purple and Gold will be a more balanced team heading into the next season. With depth in key positions, the Lakers will certainly be a more competitive team. However, their ability to contend for the title will depend upon the performance of their new players, as well as their stars. In light of his offseason conditioning, Doncic is poised to have an MVP-caliber season if he can sustain this form. Meanwhile, the contributions of players such as Smart and Ayton will be essential in shoring up the secondary scoring and the defense. If health isn't a concern, the Lakers could be a dark horse to come out of the West.
