ESPN ranks top 25 college football plays since 2000: Which Clemson moments made list?
After being named Clemson Tigers head coach on a full-time basis in December 2008, Dabo Swinney ushered in not only an era of college football excellence, he created a dynasty.
That dynasty produced six straight ACC titles and subsequent trips to the College Football Playoff, four appearances in the national championship game, and two national titles.
Both of those national championships were won against the Swinney's alma mater, the Alabama Crimson Tide, where Swinney was a walk-on receiver in 1989 and played for legendary coach -- and Bear Bryant protégé -- Gene Stallings.
Under Swinney, Clemson has had no shortage of moments over the past 17 seasons -- and counting -- that Tigers fans can describe in lurid detail from the snap of the ball right up to the final whistle.
Only one of those plays made ESPN's list of the top 25 college football plays from the first quarter of the 21st century, though. The play? The one known as 'Orange Crush.'
Hunter Renfrow's title-winning catch named a top ESPN college football play from past 25 years
ESPN ranked Hunter Renfrow's game-winning touchdown catch with one second remaining against Alabama in the 2017 College Football Playoff Championship at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa as the sport's 13th best play since 2000. The Tigers won their first national championship since the 1981 season with a 35-31 victory over Nick Saban's Crimson Tide.
Renfrow finished the night with a game-high 10 catches for 92 yards. Deshaun Watson threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns on 36-of-56 passing, and the Tigers snapped a 26-game Alabama winning streak.
ESPN's Andrea Adelson described Renfrow's game-winning catch this way:
The play forever known as "Orange Crush" delivered Clemson its second national title in school history in the 2017 national championship game and the first under coach Dabo Swinney. In an epic back-and-forth game, Alabama had scored to go ahead 31-28 with 2:07 left. Plenty of time remaining for the Tigers' offense. Quarterback Deshaun Watson marched them down the field, reaching the 2-yard line with six seconds left.
Watson found Hunter Renfrow in the end zone for the winning score -- thanks, in part, to a rub route Artavis Scott ran to give Renfrow just enough space to get open. Clemson scored with one second left to win 35-31."
Renfrow's catch ranked ahead of the "Bush Push" featuring USC Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and quarterback Matt Leinart in the Trojans' last-second win over Notre Dame in South Bend in 2005, as well as LSU's "Blue Grass Miracle" against Kentucky 14 years earlier on Nov. 9, 2022 in Lexington.
Should more Clemson highlights have made ESPN's list?
The Tigers' game-winning drive against Ohio State in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl to secure Clemson's fourth national championship game appearance in five years is one that certainly comes to mind.
Trevor Lawrence's 34-yard dump pass to Travis Etiennne with 1:34 to play in Arizona put the Tigers ahead for good in a 29-23 thriller over the Buckeyes to snap a 19-game Ohio State winning streak.
Or how about 11 months earlier in the Bay Area during 'Clemson-Alabama IV?' The Tigers pummeled the Crimson Tide at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara with a dominant 44-16 victory behind a stellar night from Lawrence (347 passing yards, three touchdowns).
The play that started it all? Cornerback A.J. Terrell's 44-yard interception return for a touchdown after picking off Tua Tagovailoa on Alabama's first drive for a 7-0 Tigers lead less than two minutes into the game. Clemson's rout of Alabama made the Tigers the first team in modern college football history to finish 15-0.

Why the Hurricanes' run game might be key to making the College Football Playoff
When the Miami Hurricanes begin the 2025 season with their marquee opener against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Aug. 31, all eyes will be on quarterback Carson Beck and how he follows up the record-setting season produced by his predecessor in Cam Ward. From there, fans will be looking to see if the defense, particularly the secondary, will improve from a disappointing 2024 season as UM eyes its a chance for its first appearance in the College Football Playoff. But could Miami's key to success actually be hiding in plain sight? If college football history during the past decade has anything to say about what will unfold in 2025, the Hurricanes' run game might be a deciding factor in if they finally break through in Year 4 under Mario Cristobal and qualify for the 12-team playoff field. Just how important is a solid running game — particularly scoring touchdowns on the ground — to winning a national championship in the College Football Playoff era? Consider the following: ▪ Since the start of the CFP format in 2014, all but one national champion has ranked in the top 25 in rushing touchdowns. The exception was the Clemson Tigers in 2016, when they barely missed the cut by being tied for 27th in rushing touchdowns. Four teams — the 2023 Michigan Wolverines, 2022 Georgia Bulldogs, 2020 Alabama Crimson Tide and 2018 Clemson — led the country or tied for the national lead in rushing touchdowns. ▪ Nearly every national champion in the 11-year history of the CFP format has had an NFL-quality running back in the backfield. 2024 Ohio State had Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson. 2023 Michigan had Blake Corum. 2020 Alabama had Najee Harris. 2019 LSU had Clyde Edwards-Helaire. 2018 Clemson had Travis Etienne. 2017 Alabama had Damien Harris. 2015 Alabama had Derrick Henry. And 2014 Ohio State had Ezekiel Elliott. ▪ And what about when the playoff field expanded to 12 teams last season? Well, 10 of the 12 teams that reached the playoffs in 2024 had at least one 1,000-yard rusher — Georgia and Indiana were the exceptions. Additionally, 10 of the 12 — all but Georgia and Clemson — ranked among the top 30 nationally in rushing touchdowns, with six ranking in the top 14 (Notre Dame third, Boise State fourth, Alabama fifth, Indiana tied for seventh, Penn State tied for ninth, Tennessee and Ohio State tied for 11th). Ten of 25 running backs selected in the 2025 NFL Draft were chosen from teams that reached the College Football Playoff. Can Miami compete with that this year? While a lot of the focus on Miami's offense last year understandably centered on Ward and the passing game, the Hurricanes actually had a quietly good run game to complement their aerial attack. Miami ranked sixth nationally in average yards per rush (5.67) and tied for 19th nationally with 30 rushing touchdowns despite averaging just 33.31 carries per game — 98th out of 134 FBS teams. The Hurricanes will have to replace their workhorse from last season in Damien Martinez — who had 1,002 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns while averaging 6.2 yards per carry — but have a loaded backfield that should be up to the task. Mark Fletcher Jr. is entering his junior season slated to be UM's lead back after consecutive seasons as the No. 2 to begin his collegiate career. He has 1,121 career rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns in two seasons at Miami. Sophomore Jordan Lyle, meanwhile, is arguably the most explosive running back on the Hurricanes' roster, and he showed it big time as a freshman when he ran for 400 yards and four touchdowns in a limited role. Of his 54 carries, nine went for at least 10 yards. His 7.41 yards per carry ranked seventh nationally among running backs with at least 50 carries. The big question becomes whether Lyle can continue with that explosiveness as his role likely increases and he sees more touches on a weekly basis. Remember he only had double-digit carries in one game as a freshman. And then there's CharMar 'Marty' Brown, who transferred to UM after spring ball and played at a championship level with FCS North Dakota State last season. As a redshirt freshman for the champion Bison, Brown ran for 1,181 yards and 15 touchdowns en route to winning the Jerry Rice Award as the top FCS freshman. He has impressed through camp so far and should figure into Miami's running back rotation. 'I think it's gonna be phenomenal,' Brown said. 'The way we compete, we compete against each other and we coach each other up at practice day in and day out. We're all brothers and we're looking forward to challenging everyone all season.'

The Data Wars Hold a Lesson for ESPN's New NFL Partnership
The recent tie-up between the NFL and ESPN, in which the league took a 10% stake in the sports media giant, contains a big unanswerable question: Will it ensure the network keeps its Monday Night Football rights for the foreseeable future? Many believe the answer is yes. But the NFL was in a similar position in 2021, in talks to renew a prominent commercial deal with a partner in which it also held an ownership stake, and the league ultimately selected a higher bid from the company's biggest competitor. More from Aaron Rodgers-Backed Group Building 'IMDb' for Athlete Deals Sporticast 474: Paramount Opens David Ellison Era With MMA Bang Jon Gruden Wins Appeal in Case Against NFL, Roger Goodell Back in 2015, the NFL signed a four-year data deal with Sportradar, at the time a private company relatively unknown in the U.S. This was before the nationwide ban on sports betting was lifted, but the NFL's media data was still a robust business, and it wasn't impossible to foresee a future where its betting feed was be the industry's most valuable commodity. As part of that original deal, the NFL took an undisclosed stake in Sportradar's growing U.S. business. The deal was extended again in 2019, and when Sportradar went public in 2021, it disclosed that the NFL owned a 7% non-voting share of its U.S. operations. Some NFL owners also invested in Sportradar separately. Yet when the NFL was in the market for a new data deal around that same time, it ended up with a different partner. In April 2021, following months of negotiations, the NFL announced an exclusive global deal with Genius Sports, Sportradar's main rival. Genius made a notably higher offer. That deal also had a significant equity component. It included penny warrants for 22.5 million shares in Genius Sports (NYSE: GENI) stock. At the time that was worth $446.6 million; it is currently worth about $283.5 million. The NFL has added additional warrants in later extensions of the Genius relationship. Equity upside has been a growing priority for the NFL over the past decade. The world's richest sports league is a key man of sorts for many of its partners, and commissioner Roger Goodell has begun prioritizing the opportunity to more directly share in the growth of companies that profit from football. This was the driving force behind 32 Equity, the league's venture arm, and the warrants that appear in a number of the NFL's commercial deals. The Sportradar equity—and the Genius equity as well—is accounted for differently from the investments made by 32 Equity. As Sportico explained in a story last week, 32 Equity deals are held entirely by owners, as is their financial upside. The equity and warrants that the league receives as part of its commercial deals, like these data tie-ups, are shared with players under the cap. The most recent CBA includes a detailed section about how that equity is amortized out over a 10-year span and shared with players at fair market value. It's unclear exactly how the league's 10% stake in ESPN works in that regard. (An NFL spokesman declined to comment). But it is notable that the partnership is technically two different non-binding agreements. In one, ESPN acquired NFL Network, RedZone and NFL Fantasy in exchange for that 10% stake. In the other, the NFL will license rights—like live games, logos and other IP—to ESPN. That appears to be structured so players get their share of those rights, but not in the ESPN equity portion. The 10% stake is likely worth at least $2 billion, and as Disney chairman Bob Iger shared last week, the NFL will receive dividends from ESPN profits. Many have interpreted this deal, in particular the 10% stake, as a back-end way for ESPN to guarantee proximity to its most valuable content partner. A LightShed Partners analyst note said the deal 'dramatically improves ESPN's chances of renewing Monday Night Football beyond the current 2033 expiration.' On a recent Semafor podcast, Pablo Torre said his former employer essentially secured 'most-favored-nation status unto eternity' with the league. But history shows that's not always the case. The NFL also received equity warrants in its 2006 supplier deal with Under Armour, and that didn't appear to grant the apparel company any prime positioning in future talks. In fact, Under Armour let its NFL deal lapse in 2020 as part of a multiyear restructuring, then returned to the league for this upcoming season. Neither Sportradar nor Under Armour provide a perfect comparison for ESPN. Broadcast agreements are way more valuable, and media is changing at a much faster clip. All of that sets the stage for a critical 2029. That's when the NFL can—and will—opt out of its current $110 billion media deals and renegotiate a whole new package. The league still cares about TV, and reach has been critical to the league's enduring success. But the NFL has also gradually dipped its toes into the streaming waters with Amazon and Netflix. Those companies have virtually unlimited funds and a growing appetite for sports. It seems very possible—likely in fact—that at least one of the NFL's four primary broadcasters ends up without games starting with the 2030 season. Will that be ESPN? It seems less likely now than two weeks ago. But as Sportradar learned in 2021, existing ties only go so far. If the price is right, your NFL deal may soon be held by your biggest competitor. Dricus Du Plessis ahead of UFC 319: Khamzat Chimaev 'definitely not bigger than me'
Dricus Du Plessis shuts down claims that Khamzat Chimaev looked a lot bigger than him in their encounter. Middleweight champion Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) defends his title against Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in Saturday's UFC 319 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) main event at United Center in Chicago. Du Plessis crossed paths with Chimaev during fight week, where the pair shared a cordial handshake. Many commented on the size difference between the two, but Du Plessis assures that's not the case. "I mean, maybe it was the angle," Du Plessis told Helen Yee. "I haven't seen the video, but I can promise you – you'll see, you'll see. I stood in front of him. He is definitely not taller than me. Maybe a little, maybe like, half an inch. Yeah, you'll see. And the other thing, I don't give a sh*t how big he is. It's not what wins fights.
