BC Camplight: A Sober Conversation review – an eccentric rock opera confronting childhood abuse
A Sober Conversation is an eccentric rock opera about repression, depression and anger told with the meta-theatrical, tragicomic style that has won Christinzio a cult following. The title track veers into showtune territory, shimmying in double time as he employs a kooky variety of voices to tease a 'big secret', but also has a gorgeous, melancholy vocal melody that Sufjan Stevens would be proud of. Single Two Legged Dog, a glam piano-pop duet with the Last Dinner Party's Abigail Morris, sticks a middle finger up to pity and culminates in a howling crescendo. Best (or most galling) of all is Where You Taking My Baby?, a chilling, jaunty confrontation of his abuser with sparse, lovely guitar underpinning the song's gut-churning question.
Christinzio's inventive, infuriating writing often packs three extra songs into every single track – but this time for good reason. When the chatter falls away on instrumental closer Leaving Camp Four Oaks, he achieves a hard-won, sun-lit sense of peace.

TV presenter Laura Jackson admits her crippling antenatal depression left her 'miserable, crying every day and unable to get out of bed'
TV presenter Laura Jackson has opened up about how her debilitating antenatal depression left her 'miserable, crying every day and unable to get out of bed'. The star, 39, was pregnant with her third child Nico in 2022 when her life was turned upside down by mental and physical health problems. Despite already having two children, daughter Sidney Frances and son Remy with her husband Jonathan Gorrigan, she was struck down with crippling symptoms the third time around. At 14 weeks pregnant she was officially diagnosed with antenatal depression and still takes antidepressants to this day. She told The Times of her experience: 'I went from feeling a bit down and tired to constantly exhausted - and so, so miserable. 'I didn't want to get out of bed. I felt as if I'd lost my personality. I cried every single day and I looked dreadful. I look back at pictures of that time now and I'm dead behind the eyes. 'Not to mention that I felt like I should be grateful - that as I was lucky to be pregnant, I was doing something wrong by feeling so awful.' She aded that 'every day was just about getting through it' and that she didn't want to see anyone. There was relief when she gave birth but then she began to struggle again and in October 2024 went to see her GP who prescribed her the antidepressants. Two years on from having her son she finally feels like she has her 'whole self back again'. Back in April 2023 Laura took to Instagram to announce the news of her third child being born and revealed their baby boy's unusual name - Nico Sunny Gorrigan. Sharing a selection of sweet images of Nico with her children, the TV host penned: 'Nico Sunny Gorrigan. Last week we completed our party of 5. 'A different, special and very wonderful kind of Easter. 'A birthing pool entrance, surrounded by our condiments in the kitchen at home - we finally said hello to the latest member of our family. After an emotional and challenging pregnancy - I feel on cloud nine, totally overjoyed that he is finally here! 'It's not often that life takes a real pause, so we are savouring these truly special moments and toasting the new arrival the only way I know how - bottomless marg.' Laura's celeb pals took to the comment section to share their congratulations. At the time she opened up about how hard she had found her pregnancy - which she had kept secret for a long time Helen Skelton wrote: 'Just beautiful', while Laura Whitmore added: 'Congrats you superstar!' Another follower added: 'Heaven!! Congratulations, well done and hi cute tiny Nico'. Laura kept her pregnancy private for as long as possible out of fears it would harm work opportunities, and revealed the news when she was eight months along, and told fans in a post on 21 February. At the time she shared several snaps of her growing bump where she told followers it had been a gruelling pregnancy filled with exhaustion and sickness. She wrote: 'I've always chosen to keep my pregnancies private for as long as possible. Worrying I will get overlooked for work and that it will affect peoples perceptions of my capabilities. 'We have definitely moved the dial a lot in terms of rights, but I think pregnancy shame is a real thing and women are still, sadly, subconsciously (and consciously) discounted from opportunities because of a bump. 'I feel conscious of an announcement trigging others: conceiving can also take a variety of paths - and I always want to try and be as sensitive as possible to friends and my community who are navigating their own fertility choosing not to navigate it at all. 'To be totally frank (and I have wondered how honest to be here) this has been the longest and most emotional 8 months. 'I have not felt myself from about 6 weeks pregnant. I've had exhaustion, zero energy, crazy hormones, feeling so incredibly lonely in this journey, tears, sickness (leading to hospitalisation), feeling like I've lost my personality, I mean, the list could go on. I wish I could have felt more Rhianna at the super bowl, but sadly not so. 'As a glass half full / over flowing kinda gal - this has been hard. These are new feelings for me and have at times felt scary. 'However, I'm so lucky to have the support of my family and friends - even though I have been a miserable b*tch. 'Being able to get pregnant and grow an actual human is of course the most special thing. I know that I'm so lucky. However it's not something my body, mind or hormones seem to enjoy: please tell me I am not alone in not enjoying this?! 'I'm very much looking forward to not having stabbing pains in my vagina, enjoying a pint(s) of margarita and just feeling like my old non-pregnant fun self — oh and meeting the baby, of course. Not long to go now!' Laura is best known for presenting the quiz shows Ready or Not on BBC One and Take Me Out: The Gossip on ITV2. Laura and Jonathan tied the knot in a dazzling beach ceremony in Porthscatho, Cornwall in September 2017.

Jena Friedman: Motherf*cker review – political zingers and all-too-raw grief
Standup shows about losing a parent – 'dead dad shows', they get called – have become a genre unto themselves in recent times, and nowadays tend to arrive couched in self-awareness and alertness to cliche. No such irony attends Jena Friedman's show about (among other things) the death of her mother, which – three years on from that event – is palpably raw and vulnerable. The parallels Friedman draws between loss of a parent and the decline of American democracy are lucid. But elsewhere her material on bereavement feels insufficiently processed and too painful, frankly, dissipating the energy of the 42-year-old's big-hitting opening half. The jaundiced tone of Motherf*cker is established from the off, as Friedman enters the stage flag-waving in a Maga cap to the strains – and it is a strain – of patriotic country music. 'I look like a Republican's wife,' she says, before launching one satirical hand-grenade after another, about abortion in the US, how the Democrats should have run Kamala Harris's campaign, and how her unborn baby resembles Jeffrey Epstein. The in-your-face material is greeted variously with startled laughter, sometimes dazed silence ('you can't rape a foetus'), and nonplussedness – see one routine sharing the home addresses of Republican lawmakers, which might be more worthwhile for an American audience. All this is just buildup to the tale of Friedman's overlapping pregnancy and bereavement. She's anxious about becoming a parent, turning to her mother for support – only for mum to be given a cancer diagnosis and weeks to live. There's some meconium-black comedy on how these processes mirror one another (on her son's difficult birth: 'I didn't want to leave my mum either') and a could-be-fun closer about her mum intervening (or is she?) from beyond the grave. But their humour is undermined by Friedman's emphasis on how damaged she was, and still is, by her loss. There's some awkward crowdwork, too, which includes repeated apologies for the 'gross' venue and her miming, apropos of not much, the mass-shooting of her audience. Motherf*cker makes an impact, politically and personally, but not always a comic one. At Monkey Barrel at the Hive, Edinburgh, until 24 August All our Edinburgh festival reviews

JUSTIN BIEBER looked concerned on a night out with wife Hailey and her best friend Kendall Jenner. The trio were spotted stepping out together just days after Justin, 31, and Hailey, 28, splashed the cash on a secluded $7 million mansion. 5 5 Justin took to Instagram to share a pic of him and the Kar-Jenner in deep conversation whilst he expressed a concerned look. The pals who have now been friends for over a decade looked casual Kendall, 29, wearing a black halter top and white jeans with Justin opting for a white vest and jeans. Hailey commented underneath the post, saying: "It's always Kendall telling a story with her hands.' With Kendall promptly replying: 'God forbid i'm a visual storyteller.' Fans seemed to be surprised by the post, considering Kendall and Justin faced dating rumours before the latter married Hailey in 2018. One user said: 'This man posted up with everybody but his wife,' 'Everyone freaking out as if that's not Hailey's bff of over a decade and she was there like lol,' added another. 'Justin trying to lock in to what Kendall is saying is SENDING me (crying emoji)' said a third. A fourth said: 'What's funny is Hailey is probably the one that probably took this picture and everyone is writing think pieces.' In what seemed like a swift response Justin uploaded a photo of him and his wife sweetly smiling together in the same venue. Justin Bieber sparks concern with series of worrying selfies as he refers to drugs in shock post Justin recently snapped up a secluded Idaho home by a lake that is now worth $7 million, The U.S. Sun exclusively revealed. The singer brought the property which is near the Gozzer Ranch Golf & Lake Club in 2020. Property documents show the custom-built home, measuring almost 5,000 square feet, has five bedrooms and five and a half bathrooms. It boasts an open-plan style with the kitchen flowing through to the dining room and top-of-the-range appliances. The outdoor area is perfect for entertaining with a barbecue, covered patio, and outdoor fire pit. Bieber bought the property for $4.2 million in mid-2020 under an LLC linked to Tri Star Sports and Entertainment Group, which he has since parted ways with. A local source told The U.S. Sun, "Justin has been coming to Coeur d'Alene for years. "He can be out on the water, and hang out at the Gozzer ranch club without being disturbed every day, and have people taking photographs of everything he does, he can relax more. "He's often playing golf and hanging with friends, just being a normal guy and not a pop star. "Justin has even been seen downtown browsing around the local shops, but people tend to leave him alone. "They are very protective here, and it's not unusual to see stars. "This is a place where celebrities come to get away and can switch off, and it's packed with natural beauty." 5 5 5
