Kenny Bednarek criticizes Noah Lyles after 200m shoving match: ‘It's not good character'
'Like I've said before, Noah's going be Noah,' Bednarek said. 'If he wants to stare me down, that's fine.'
Lyles reeled in Bednarek and crossed in 19.63 seconds for a 0.04sec victory that sets up a rematch at the world championships, which take place next month in Tokyo.
The best action on Sunday arguably came after the finish line. There was jawing, the shove and, then, Lyles turning around, backpedaling, reaching his arms out and bouncing up and down like a boxer before lobbing a few more choice words at Bednarek.
Their argument bled into the post-race interview.
'I tell ya, if you've got a problem, I expect a call,' Bednarek said, as NBC's Lewis Johnson moved the mic between the runners.
Lyles replied: 'You know what, you're right. You're right. Let's talk after this.'
Though they shook hands during the interview, Bednarek was fired up well after the sprinters had left the track.
'The summary is, don't do that to me,' he said. 'I don't do any of that stuff. It's not good character right there. That's pretty much it. At the end of the day, he won the race. I've got to give him props. He was the better man today.'
The win itself was no big surprise for Lyles, the three-time defending world champion who will have to get past Bednarek to make it four in Tokyo. Bednarek was asked what Lyles said as he turned around and gloated after securing his fifth national title at his favorite distance.
'What he said didn't matter, it's just what he did,' Bednarek said. 'Unsportsmanlike … and I don't deal with that. It's a respect factor. He's fresh. Last time we lined it up, I beat him, that's all I can say. Next time we line up, I'm going to win. That's all that matters.'
Asked to expand on his role in the tiff, Lyles was less forthcoming: 'On coach's orders, no comment.'
Bednarek has won silver and beaten Lyles the last two times they've lined up in the 200m at the Olympics, even though Lyles has had issues at both – in Tokyo with his mental health, then in Paris with Covid.
Bednarek referenced some long-simmering issues between the two. 'Just some personal stuff we've got to handle,' he said.
When asked to expand on his rivalry with Bednarek, Lyles demurred, instead focusing on what a difficult year this has been for him after an injury in April kept him out of spikes until June.
'If they ain't gonna beat me now, they ain't gonna beat me ever,' Lyles said.
Bednarek wasn't so sure. The 200m final was Bednarek's fifth race of the week, counting the three heats of the 100m, where he won the final on Friday. Lyles, who has an automatic spot at worlds in that event as the defending champion, only ran one heat of the 100m.
'We'll go fresh and we'll see what happens,' Bednarek said. 'Because I'm very confident I can beat him. That's all I can say.'

Bo Bichette blasts two homers as Blue Jays blow out Rockies
August 5 - Bo Bichette homered twice, singled and drove in six runs, Ernie Clement had a career-high five hits, and the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Colorado Rockies 15-1 in Denver on Monday. Toronto's Daulton Varsho went deep for the first time since coming off the injured list on Friday and finished with two hits and four RBIs. Nathan Lukes and Joey Loperfido had three hits apiece and Addison Barger, Alejandro Kirk and Davis Schneider contributed two hits each as the Blue Jays collected season highs in runs and hits (25) to back a strong outing by Eric Lauer (7-2). The left-hander entered Monday with 0-6 with a 12.73 ERA across seven starts in Denver, but he held Colorado to one run on seven hits over six innings. Lauer struck out four and walked one. Ezequiel Tovar had two hits for Colorado, including an RBI single. Toronto scored quickly against Rockies starter Tanner Gordon (2-4). Lukes led off the game with a double and scored on Bichette's single, but Gordon got out of the inning without further damage. The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead in the second on Schneider's RBI single, then opened it up in the third. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Barger began the inning with singles. Both moved up on Kirk's flyout to right before Varsho homered over Colorado's bullpen to make it 5-0, his ninth of the season. Clement followed with a triple and scored on Loperfido's single. Loperfido scored on Schneider's double. That ended the night for Gordon, who allowed seven runs on 11 hits over 2 2/3 innings. He walked none and fanned one. Ryan Rolison came on and walked Lukes before Bichette hit his first homer of the night. The Rockies got to Lauer with two outs in the fifth when Tyler Freeman doubled and scored on Tovar's single. Toronto put the game away in the seventh against Carson Palmquist. Clement, Lukes and Loperfido singled to bring home one run, and Bichette hit his second homer of the night and 15th of the season. A walk and singles by Kirk and Varsho brought home another run. Clement's RBI double in the ninth finished the scoring. --Field Level Media

Josh Jung's 10th-inning walk-off HR lifts Rangers over Yankees
August 5 - Josh Jung's two-out, three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning provided the winning runs as the Texas Rangers rallied for an 8-5 walk-off victory over the slumping New York Yankees on Monday in the opener of a three-game series in Arlington, Texas. After New York did not score in the top of the 10th, Yankees reliever Jake Bird (4-2) retired the first two batters he faced before Jung rocketed his homer into the left field stands. Danny Coulombe (2-0) worked through a two-out walk in the 10th to earn the win. The Rangers' Joc Pederson ripped a one-out pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth inning off Devin Williams that tied the game at 5-5 and sent it to extra innings. Paul Goldschmidt had three hits and scored three runs to lead the Yankees' attack. New York has dropped four straight games. Goldschmidt opened the game with a solo homer to left field off Rangers starter Patrick Corbin. New York added to its lead with a pair of runs in the second. Amed Rosario's RBI single drove in Austin Wells, who had singled to lead off the frame and moved to third on a double by Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt then trotted home on a single by Cody Bellinger. The Rangers responded in the bottom of the frame. Wyatt Langford started the rally with a one-out double and Jung followed with a walk. Josh Smith drove in Langford with a single before Jonah Heim's infield single loaded the bases. Ezequiel Duran plated Jung and Smith with a single to left field that tied the game. Heim then scored on an errant pickoff throw to second base by Yankees starter Max Fried that gave Texas a 4-3 lead. Giancarlo Stanton put the Yankees back on top in the fourth on a line drive home run over the center field fence that allowed Goldschmidt, who had reached on a single, to score ahead of him. Jon Gray took over for Corbin in the fourth and pitched five innings while throwing 66 pitches -- both were season highs. New York ace Fried allowed four runs and scattered eight hits while walking three and striking out seven in five innings. He was followed to the mound by Luke Weaver, Camilo Doval and David Bednar, all of whom pitched a scoreless inning. --Field Level Media

Eagles star Saquon Barkley declines invitation to serve on Trump's sports council
Saquon Barkley has declined an invitation to join Donald Trump's council on sports, fitness, and nutrition, which is being revitalized under an executive order. Barkley, the 2,000-yard rusher for the Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, was on a list of sports personalities that included golfers Bryson DeChambeau and Nelly Korda, WWE executive Paul 'Triple H' Levesque, football Hall of Famer Lawrence Taylor and retired New York Yankees great Mariano Rivera. Barkley confirmed on Monday that he had declined the invitation. 'A couple months ago, it was brought to my team about the council,' Barkley told reporters after Monday's Eagles practice session. 'So I'm not really too familiar with it. I felt like that I am going to be super busy. Me and my family thought it would probably be of best interest to not accept that. I was definitely a little shocked when my name was mentioned. I'm assuming it's something great, so I appreciate it but was a little shocked when my name was mentioned.' Trump last week reestablished the Presidential Fitness Test for American children, a fixture of public schools for decades that gauged young people's health and athleticism with one-mile runs, sit-ups and stretching exercises. 'This is a wonderful tradition, and we're bringing it back,' Trump said of the fitness test that began in 1966 but was phased out during the Obama administration. The executive order also reinvigorated the national sports council that could have included Barkley. Barkley won AP Offensive Player of the Year last season after rushing for 2,005 yards, eighth-best in NFL history, in his first season with the Eagles. Barkley has golfed with Trump and Barack Obama over the last year and the running back attended the White House celebration of the champion Eagles while some teammates – notably star quarterback Jalen Hurts – skipped the ceremony. Barkley visited Trump in April at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey, and caught a ride with the president to Washington on Air Force One and then to the White House on Marine One. 'He loved it,' Trump said then of Barkley's short flight on the presidential airplane. 'He's a great young guy and an incredible football player. Saquon had a season for the ages, running behind the most powerful offensive line in the NFL.' Barkley, meanwhile, pushed back on social media criticism following the visit. He noted that he had already golfed with Obama. 'Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand,' Barkley posted on X.
