ATHENS (Reuters) -Greece's government on Monday postponed a basketball game between local rivals Olympiacos and Panathinaikos and threatened to cancel the national championship after tensions between team owners boiled over at a match on Sunday.
Olympiacos basketball owners Panagiotis and George Aggelopoulos, and Panathinaikos owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos clashed over the alleged use of obscene gestures and offensive chants by spectators.
The sides were scheduled to play the third of five potential end-of-season games on Wednesday, but that game has been put on hold after
Government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakissaid the owners would appear in front of the deputy sports minister and promise that this behaviour will not be repeated.
"Otherwise, this year's championship will be permanently suspended," Marinakis added.
Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, two of Greece's biggest basketball clubs, recently played each other for third place in the EuroLeague finals in Abu Dhabi.
Violence has plagued sport in Greece in recent years.
Two young soccer fans were killed in 2023 and 2022, and a Greek court found a 20-year old man guilty of manslaughter over the 2023 death of a policeman hit by a flare during clashes with spectators at a volleyball game.
Authorities have promised to crack down to tackle the issue.

Swimming-World Aquatics adopts bylaw to stop doping enablers amid Enhanced Games furore

FILE PHOTO: Swimming - European Aquatics Championships - Sports and Recreational Center Milan Gale Muskatirovic, Belgrade, Serbia - June 23, 2024 Gold medallist, Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev poses with his medal on the podium after winning the men's 50m freestyle final REUTERS/Novak Djurovic/File Photo (Reuters) -World Aquatics introduced a new bylaw on Tuesday that will prevent any athlete or official who supports or endorses doping from competing or holding any positions after a Greek swimmer supported by the Enhanced Games 'broke' the world record. With the help of the controversial programme, Greece's Kristian Gkolomeev swam the men's 50 metres freestyle in 20.89 seconds to shave 0.02 seconds off the long-standing record set by Brazil's Cesar Cielo in 2009. Gkolomeev, who has competed at four Olympics and came fifth in the event at the Paris Games last year with a time of 21.59 seconds, said he had gained "an extra 10 pounds of muscle" before the attempt. Enhanced Games had declined to disclose which "performance enhancements" the 31-year-old used. "Individuals who support, endorse, or participate in sporting events that embrace the use of scientific advancements or other practices ... will not be eligible to hold positions with World Aquatics or to participate in any World Aquatics competitions, events, or other activities," World Aquatics said. The practices can include either prohibited substances or prohibited methods. "This ineligibility would apply to roles such as athlete, coach, team official, administrator, medical support staff, or government representative," the governing body added. The Enhanced Games operate under the principle that banning performance-enhancing drugs in major competitions does not protect athletes but rather stifles their performance, and called on athletes to join the competition. The World Anti-Doping Agency had condemned the Enhanced Games as "dangerous and irresponsible", while Olympic 50 metres freestyle champion Cam McEvoy said Gkolomeev's time was 'irrelevant' to the sport. "Those who enable doped sport are not welcome at World Aquatics or our events," World Aquatics president Husain Al Musallam said. "This new bylaw ensures that we can continue to protect the integrity of our competitions, the health and safety of our athletes, and the credibility of the global aquatics community." The Enhanced Games have set their inaugural competition for May 2026 in Las Vegas, with swimming, athletics and weightlifting on the agenda. Safawi ready to roar in new position as Harimau Malaya striker

WINGER Muhammad Safawi Rasid is ready to embrace the challenge of playing in a new position as a striker in international matches for Harimau Malaya. Muhammad Safawi stated that the Tier 1 international match against Cape Verde last week was his first experience playing in the striker's position in a national team fixture. However, Muhammad Safawi who has more frequently been deployed on the wing and in central midfield positions previously, had no difficulty adapting to the new role. 'For me, there's no problem with an attacking position because perhaps the coach knows better what I do in training. So I took the responsibility that night to prove something. Alhamdulillah, we got a good result,' he said when met at the national team's training session here today. The 28-year-old player was fielded in the starting eleven, partnering with Mohamad Faisal Abdul Halim and Arif Aiman Mohd Hanapi in attack when Malaysia drew 1-1 with Cape Verde at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium, Cheras, last Thursday. Meanwhile, Muhammad Safawi considers the presence of heritage players in the national team as beneficial for creating a healthy competitive environment among players. 'I have no problem. Regardless of whether they are local players, naturalized players, or anyone, for me, in training, you have to give 100 percent, no excuses. I have no problem competing in training,' he said. Local media today reported that three new heritage players will arrive in Malaysia ahead of tomorrow night's match against Cape Verde. The three players mentioned are striker Rodrigo Holgado from the United States, Azerbaijan club Sabah FC defender Jon Irazabal, and Olympiacos striker Jefte Betancor, who is currently on loan at Panserraikos. Malaysia will face Cape Verde in a closed door friendly match at the National Stadium, Bukit Jalil here, tomorrow before their showdown against Vietnam in a Group F match of the 2027 Asia Cup qualifiers at the National Stadium, next Tuesday. Vietnam and Malaysia share the top spot in the group with three points each after winning their respective opening matches.
