Bessent Is Deluded About Stablecoins Funding the Deficit

Scott Bessent is wrong about a potential big new source of demand for US government debt — again. The Treasury Secretary expects stablecoins, the crypto tokens designed to keep a constant dollar value, to grow rapidly and gobble up huge volumes of public bonds. Both the explosion of issuance and the impact on Treasuries are overblown. It's the second time this year Bessent has gotten overexcited that rewriting financial rules will help meet the country's vast and growing borrowing needs. In April, he said his loosening of constraints on the balance sheets of big banks would increase their appetite for holding Treasuries — but it will only help them trade bonds and lend more to hedge funds.

Russia launches missiles in Sea of Japan during drills

Russia launches missiles in Sea of Japan during drills MOSCOW (Reuters) -Russia's Pacific Fleet launched cruise and anti-ship missiles during drills in the Sea of Japan that also involved aircraft and drones, the Russian defence ministry said on Thursday. "Kalibr and Uran missiles were fired by the Marshal Shaposhnikov frigate in the Sea of Japan, and the sailors successfully hit their target," the ministry said. "The manoeuvre was carried out by ships and vessels of the Pacific Fleet, as well as the fleet's naval aviation aircraft and drones," it said. The defence ministry released footage of the frigate launching the missiles. Reuters reported earlier this month that there is growing willingness in Japan to loosen its decades-old pledge not to produce, possess or host nuclear weapons in its territory – what is known as the "Three Non-Nuclear Principles."
