Leave two-thirds of road flank for traffic movement, HC tells rallyists
Kolkata: Keeping in mind the commuters' woes during a rally, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday asked the police authorities to ensure that the breadth of political rallies be restricted to a third of the road to ensure there is two-third space for vehicular movement. Justice Tirthankar Ghosh made this observation while granting permission to the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha to organise a rally to protest against the sexual assault at a law college in south Kolkata. The rally, scheduled between 1 pm and 5 pm on Wednesday, from Kalighat metro station to the opposite flank of the law college, will have to be restricted to a third of the road and leave the rest for vehicles to ply. Justice Ghosh went on to observe that the breadth of the banner being held upfront also needed to be restricted to one-third of the road. For instance, if the road is 20 ft, then the banner can be 6 ft wide. The BJP's youth wing approached Justice Ghosh's bench to organise the rally. They had earlier proposed to conduct the rally from Kalighat metro station to Kasba police station, but the state turned the request down. The senior standing counsel appearing for the state stated that there had been instances of violence in front of the police station in the recent past. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Что о вас может рассказать поза во время сна? Apart from the usual regulations, the high court noted that the organisers had submitted their mobile numbers. "No attempt should be made to injure anyone, throw brickbats or turn aggressive against public servants. In case of a crisis, the organisers will try to dissuade the participants. The protesters will not dislodge the barricades in and around the law college or Kasba police station," Justice Ghosh stated. Justice Ghosh, during a different hearing, asked the state to come up with a notification earmarking areas where sit-in demonstrations and agitations can be conducted. The judge said: "Ask your principal secretary, Kolkata Police commissioner or Bengal DGP for the rules. Take reports from the SPs and earmark the areas. For Kolkata, ask the police commissioner because they are the ultimate authority who would be responsible for the law-and-order situation. Raj govt stands by SI recruitment exam, refuses to cancel it
1 2 Jaipur: In a decisive move, the state govt informed the Rajasthan High Court Tuesday it would not cancel the controversial 2021 sub-inspector recruitment examination, despite allegations of paper leaks and use of dummy candidates. After months of protests for and against the demand to cancel the exam as well as the court's directives for administrative clarity in the matter, the state govt finally made its stand clear during the hearing before the single bench of Justice Sameer Jain. Advocate general Rajendra Prasad, representing the state govt, said, "The decision to continue with the recruitment process is based on recommendations by a cabinet sub-committee which met on June 28 and subsequently approved by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma." Prasad informed the court that just 53 candidates out of the 838 selected (6.3%) were found to be involved in exam malpractices. "These tainted candidates have already been terminated or suspended from the police service," he said. Additional advocate general Vigyan Shah outlined four key recommendations made by the committee, including continued investigation by the special investigation team (SIT) and debarment of any tainted candidates discovered in the future. "The committee has also recommended age relaxation for candidates in upcoming SI recruitment exams," said Shah. "With any decision in the matter, a situation should not arise where we cannot differentiate between right and wrong in the recruitment process," he added. Senior advocate RN Mathur, representing the selected candidates, supported the govt's decision, arguing that cancelling the entire recruitment process would unfairly punish innocent candidates for the actions of a few tainted ones. "The state govt's decision is fair. If the recruitment is cancelled, everyone will have to bear the brunt of the mistake of a few people," said Mathur. The govt decision was opposed by lawyers of petitioners seeking cancellation of the exam. Senior advocate Major RP Singh and advocate Harendra Neel, on behalf of the petitioners, pointed out that the same sub-committee had previously recommended cancellation of the recruitment process. "When the same sub-committee can make two different recommendations, then the high court also has the right to do a judicial review of the govt decision," said Singh. The high court has scheduled the final hearing of the matter for July 7, when a definitive decision is expected to be reached on this contentious case. 7 illegal Bangladeshis, including five trans people, apprehended
New Delhi: Delhi Police has apprehended seven illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, including five transgenders, from northwest Delhi's Shalimar Bagh on Monday. Among them is Suhan Khan, a deported Bangladeshi national who illegally re-entered India just weeks after being sent back in May. The individuals were caught following coordinated raids across multiple localities in Shalimar Bagh, during which police also seized mobile phones installed with the banned IMO app — allegedly used to communicate with their families in Bangladesh. The apprehension follows a district-wide special drive aimed at identifying illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, with a specific focus on areas under the Shalimar Bagh police station. "During the drive, the police team conducted surprise checks across main roads, residential colonies, traffic junctions, and inner streets. It was during this coordinated sweep that five transgender individuals were found begging at different spots in Shalimar Bagh," DCP (North West) Bhisham Singh said.
