Why is a non-Muslim DAP rep allowed to poke his nose in the running of Islamic affairs?

Focus Malaysia06-06-2025
MUSLIMS seem to be divided over the recent 'open-minded' move by the Negeri Sembilan Islamic Religious Council (MAINS) to include non-Muslim politicians in its Islamic affairs briefing.
This came about as a pro-opposition netizen questioned the presence of the state's Industry and Non-Muslim Affairs Committee chairman Teo Kok Seong (not to be mistaken for his controversial academician namesake) at the briefing on grounds that 'matters pertaining to Islamic affairs should shield be left to Muslims to manage by themselves'.
'Such action is incorrect and should be questioned,' he penned on X in reaction to a photo bearing the caption 'There is a DAP representative in the MAINS meeting as an observer'.
Sampai sekarang kerajaan Negeri Sembilan PH-BN tak memberikan penjelasan kenapa ada pemimpin non-muslim yang masuk dlm mesyuarat Majlis Agama Islam Negeri Sembilan.
Hal ehwal urusan agama islam biarlah org islam sendiri uruskan.
Tindakan ini tidak betul & perlu ditegur. pic.twitter.com/3VSsWQpxDL

Earlier, MAINS had defended the briefing held on May 20 which Teo who is also a two-term Bahau state assemblyman attended as part of an inclusive and integrated governance approach involving members of the state executive council, including non-Muslims.
'The attendance was in line with the directive and consent of the Negeri Sembilan ruler Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir aimed at providing exposure and deepening understanding of Islamic administration in the state,' read the statemen by MAINS.
The council further noted that it had previously conducted a similar briefing with all state assembly members – including non-Muslims from both government and opposition – on Oct 8 last year.
This approach reflects its commitment to progressive and inclusive Islamic governance, according to the council.
Many Madani government backers ticked of the poster for his narrow mindset, alluding to the point that Tuanku Muhriz as the Negeri Sembilan ruler had consented the move given Teo's attendance would further enhance the understanding of non-Muslims on the state's Islamic administration.
Moreover, the poster was either oblivious or had y chosen to ignore to ignore the fact that MAINS had clarified on the matter on May 27 which is two days prior to his social media post.
As one commenter aptly put it, though there was a non-Muslim presence in the briefing, 'it's the Muslims who eventually make decisions on Islamic matters'.
This is when it became obvious that the issue here is not about non-Muslims sitting in the briefing or interfering in the administration of Islamic affairs but merely a tool by the pro-PAS faction to demonise DAP.
To counter the grouses of a pro-opposition commenter as to why 'only Muslins are busy inviting non-Muslims to gatherings/conferences related to Islam when the same is not reciprocated by non-Muslims', one rational Muslim furnished the following cheeky response:
'How is this possible when some radical Muslims have even demanded that the Christian cross at churches be removed. And now you want to be invited to interfaith dialogues?' – May 31, 2025

Zahid touts nation's potential as Islamic world's digital hub

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has the potential to become the Islamic world's digital hub, particularly in the region, by developing Shariah-compliant artificial intelligence (AI). Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the launch of a Shariah-compliant artificial intelligence platform, by Zetrix AI Berhad today would catalyse advancing the nation's technology sector. By positioning itself as a leader in Shariah-compliant AI, Zahid said, Malaysia could open the door to strategic cooperation with Asean and Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries, and strengthen its global influence. "Malaysia, long recognised as a global leader in halal certification, a respected hub for Islamic finance, and a modern centre of Shariah academic reference, is now taking a further step forward to lead the world in Shariah-compliant AI. "I want this launch to mark the beginning of a nationwide movement, with the government strengthening policy and infrastructure, and industry integrating into their operations." "Educational institutions should also embed Shariah-compliant AI into curricula and research, and religious bodies must ensure that every step is correct, with integrity and rooted in Islamic values," he said in his speech at the launch of here today. Zetrix AI Berhad, formerly known as MY E.G. Services Berhad, today unveiled NurAI, the world's first Shariah-aligned, Islamic values-based large language model. NurAI offers guidance consistent with Shariah rulings on a comprehensive spectrum of subject matters, ranging from contemporary topics such as law, healthcare, and finance, to classical Islamic themes including history, Islamic philosophy, and Quranic studies. Meanwhile, Zahid said digital progress must be rooted in values so that technology drives prosperity and wellbeing without undermining the nation's identity and principles. He cautioned that studies had found certain AI-generated content on Western platforms related to Islam contained bias or factual inaccuracies. He said this poses risks when Islamic information is presented without the correct context, when fatwas are misquoted, or when the faith and culture are subtly misrepresented. "We have seen instances where AI systems have provided answers that contradict Shariah principles when asked about Islamic finance rulings, or have quoted unauthenticated sources when discussing matters of aqidah. "This is a gap we must close and, inshaAllah, I am confident that is capable of doing so," he said. He said the platform could be the foundation for shaping public understanding, from clarifying what is halal and haram, to guiding on zakat and faraid, to offering Shariah-compliant investment advice. "I envision a future in which Malaysia serves as the world's primary point of reference and an integrated AI platform for Islamic education systems worldwide. "These include AI applications for mosque administration, zakat management and Quran teaching and international research collaborations that advance innovation grounded in Islamic values," he said.

Penang DAP: No room for third party to exploit upside-down flag issue

GEORGE TOWN: Penang DAP today issued a stern warning against anyone attempting to exploit the recent case involving the national flag being hoisted upside down in Kepala Batas. Without naming anyone, state DAP chairman Steven Sim Chee Keong stressed that there is no room for any third party to take advantage of the incident. He said Penang DAP would take to the ground to stand with the people if anyone attempted to threaten or disturb them over the matter. "Penang DAP firmly upholds peace and harmony in the state, in line with the spirit of patriotism that we all take pride in. "The upside-down flag issue in Kepala Batas has been fully handed over to the police to investigate and handle according to the law. "There is no room for any third party to take advantage of or stir up the situation. "If anyone attempts to threaten or disturb the people of Penang over this matter, Penang DAP will take to the ground, stand with the people, and respond to provocations by distributing the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of unity and love for the country," he said in a statement. Although Sim did not name anyone, his statement came on the heels of Umno Youth chief Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh's remarks yesterday that he would hold a "class" for a hardware store owner in Penang if the latter was not charged by Thursday. "The way forward is through the collective determination of every Malaysian, regardless of race or religion, to preserve unity, strengthen harmony, and nurture love for our beloved homeland, Malaysia," he added. Earlier today, MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong urged Akmal to stop issuing threats to "personally educate" a shop owner over an improperly hoisted national flag. In a Facebook post, Wee had said he feared such public intimidation would only backfire and make Malaysians "think twice" about proudly displaying the Jalur Gemilang. Yesterday, police had said the hardware store owner, who was detained for allegedly displaying the Jalur Gemilang upside down in front of his premises in Kepala Batas, had been released on police bail.

PAS MP retracts claim linking Rayer to May 13 riots

Jelutong MP RSN Rayer filed a motion last week to refer Pendang MP Awang Hashim to Parliament's rights and privileges committee after the latter asked whether the government was trying to cause a recurrence of the May 13 riots. KUALA LUMPUR : Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) was forced to withdraw his remarks in the Dewan Rakyat today after claiming that RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) was involved in the May 13 racial riots. Rayer had asked Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul if action would be taken against Awang for bringing up the May 13 riots in the Dewan Rakyat last week. The DAP man said others would have been hauled to court by now for bringing up the controversial incident, but that no action had been taken against Awang. Hearing this, Awang interjected: 'I feel Rayer was involved with May 13 (riots), that's why he keeps disturbing (proceedings to raise the matter).' Chong Zhemin (PH-Kampar) then urged the PAS MP to retract his statement, questioning the basis of his accusation. Johari stepped in but had to ask Awang three times to withdraw his statement against Rayer, which he eventually did. He also said he was waiting for Awang to respond to him in writing regarding his May 13 remark last week, although the Perikatan Nasional MP said he had yet to receive the letter. Johari maintained that he had given Awang a deadline, after which he would make a decision. Last week, Rayer filed a motion to refer Awang to Parliament's rights and privileges committee after the PAS man asked whether the government was trying to cause a recurrence of the May 13 riots. Awang was speaking about the lack of initiatives for the Bumiputera community under the 13th Malaysia Plan when he made the remark.
