India on Thursday said it remained engaged with China to facilitate the resumption of border trade through designated transit points.The border trade between the two countries was stopped in view of the eastern Ladakh military standoff in 2020."We have remained engaged with the Chinese side to facilitate the resumption of border trade through all the designated trade points, namely Lipulekh Pass in Uttarakhand, Shipki La Pass in Himachal Pradesh, and Nathu La Pass in Sikkim," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.It is learnt that India and China are at an "advanced stage" of negotiations to resume direct flight services between the two countries soon.In the last few months, India and China have initiated a number of measures to repair the bilateral ties that had severely nosedived following the deadly clashes between the two militaries in June 2020.Last month, India announced the resumption of issuance of tourist visas to Chinese nationals.The military standoff in eastern Ladakh began in May 2020 and the clashes at the Galwan Valley in June that year resulted in a severe strain in ties between India and China.The face-off effectively ended following completion of the disengagement process from the last two friction points of Demchok and Depsang under an agreement finalised on October 21 last year.

The Lok Sabha will hold a special discussion on Monday on the subject 'India's first astronaut aboard the International Space Station – Critical role of the space programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047 – to mark astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla's return to India. Shukla returned to India early Sunday to a rousing welcome by a large number of people waving the tricolour and beating drums at the airport here to celebrate his historic visit to the International Space Station (ISS). The Monsoon Session of Parliament will resume on Monday, 18 August after a brief break, but there are no signs of a thaw between the government and the Opposition over the demand for a debate on Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Monsoon Session ends on 21 August. Shukla is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday and travel to his hometown, Lucknow. He is also expected to return to the capital to participate in the National Space Day celebrations on August 22-23. Shukla, who became the second Indian to undertake a spaceflight as part of the Axiom-4 mission, and his back-up astronaut-designate Prashanth Balakrishnan Nair were welcomed at the airport by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and ISRO Chairman V Narayanan. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his two-day visit to India beginning Monday, according to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA). The meeting, to be held on Tuesday, assumes significance as it is taking place days before Modi's planned trip to China to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Before calling on the PM, Wang will hold separate talks with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval that could see both sides deliberate on a range of key issues including border situation, trade and resumption of flight services. The Chinese foreign minister's visit is largely seen as part of ongoing efforts by the two neighbours to rebuild their relationship after it came under severe strain following the deadly Galwan Valley clashes in 2020. The two sides are expected to discuss new confidence-building measures for durable peace and tranquillity along their contested border during Wang's visit, people familiar with the matter said on Sunday. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Monday a batch of pleas challenging the appointment of Jharkhand DGP Anurag Gupta on grounds that due process was not followed. A bench of Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria is scheduled to hear the petitions challenging Gupta's appointment. Several petitions have been filed, including by Leader of Opposition in Jharkhand Assembly Babulal Marandi, who has challenged the appointment of Gupta as Director General of Police (DGP) of the state. Gupta was set to retire on April 30 under the Central government's rules on reaching the age of 60 but the state government wrote to the Centre for extension of his tenure.

Days after India tariffs, US cautions against sanctioning China over Russian oil
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has cited "implications" that could play out globally if a country like China is sanctioned for its oil trade with Russia. His remarks come weeks after US President Donald Trump threatened an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian imports for buying Russian oil. Responding to the question, the US official spoke about implications to secondary sanctions, and citing China's example said, "Let's say you were to go after the oil sales oil to China, China just refines that oil, which is sold into the global marketplace and anyone who is buying that oil would be paying more for it or if it doesn't exist, would have to find an alternative source for it." Marco Rubio further spoke about a Senate bill proposing to sanction countries like India and China for buying Russian oil, and said the US did hear from "a number of European countries" regarding some concerns they may have had about it. Rubio's latest remarks on risks to sanctioning China bring focus back on criticism of India being singled out for getting additional tariffs over buying Russian oil. Earlier, when Donald Trump was asked by only India was being targeted over its trade with Russia, he had said, "It's only been 8 hours. So let's see what happens. You're going to see a lot going to see so much secondary sanctions.' After Trump doubled India's duties to 50% earlier this month, New Delhi had issued a strong response, pointing out that the US was targeting India for "actions that several other countries are also taking". However, after his high-stakes meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump seemed to have softened his stance on additional tariffs against countries doing business with Russia. "Well, because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that (tariffs)," Trump told Fox News' Sean Hannity in an interview after the meeting. Notably, Trump recently extended the tariff deadline for China, which was set to end on August 12, by another 90 days. Presently, US charges 30% tariffs on Chinese imports, including a 10% base rate and 20% in fentanyl-related tariffs imposed by Washington in February and March.
