Australian hospital examines patient records after nurse claims to have killed Israelis

MELBOURNE — An Australian hospital is examining patient records after a nurse claimed online to have killed Israelis, officials said, stressing that no evidence of harm to patients was uncovered.
The claim appears to have been the latest in a surge of antisemitic attacks and rhetoric that has roiled Australia as homes, offices and businesses have been vandalized and a school and two synagogues were torched in just over a year with crimes targeting Jews.
A police strike force, established to focus on the antisemitic crimes in Sydney since the Israel-Hamas war began in 2023, was investigating potential offenses stemming from the online video, including breaches of hate speech law, New South Wales state Health Minister Ryan Park said.
Hate crime officials in Sydney and Melbourne — the nation's largest cities, where 85% of Australia's Jewish population lives — are separately investigating the discovery of a trailer containing explosives, a list of potential Jewish targets and arson attacks on two synagogues.
Two nurses who took part in an online discussion with Israeli influencer Max Veifer during a night shift on Tuesday at Sydney's Bankstown Hospital were suspended Wednesday, and Park said they would never work for the state health department again.
'They are vile, disgusting and deranged individuals,' Park told reporters.
Jewish leader Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive officer of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, asserted that there has been increasing extremism among Australia's medical professionals toward Sydney's Jewish community.
'For months, I've been hearing from medical practitioners in the community who have been warning about extreme content posted by other doctors and nurses online,' Ryvchin told Network 10 television, adding that this was not the work of 'isolated individuals.'
'This is merely the tip of the iceberg,' he added.
Authorities responded within hours after the video of the nurses, a man and woman who have not been named, was posted online. Attempts to directly contact the nurses were unsuccessful, and Veifer did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Veifer is a right-wing activist from Israel who uses recordings of video conversations with random users around the world to publicize his English language courses. He has had a few viral videos in which he attempts to catch people making anti-Israel statements during their conversations. In an interview with Israel's right-wing Channel 14 last month, Veifer said he was making the videos to reveal antisemitism and anti-Israeli sentiment in the world.
In the video, the two nurses purported to be doctors, according to department secretary Susan Pearce. There was no immediate information from their supervisors.
The female nurse said she wouldn't treat an Israeli patient but would kill them, while the male nurse used expletives and a throat-slitting gesture.
Park, the regional health minister, said an investigation into Bankstown Hospital has found no evidence of Jewish patients being hurt.
'To the Jewish community today, I say not only am I sorry, but I can assure you this: The care that you get in our hospitals will continue to be first class,' Park said, adding that the hospital's past record would also be examined.

Health Department Awards Optus $33M Contract for Medicare Communications Infrastructure

The Department of Health has awarded Australian telecommunications giant Optus a $33 million contract to provide critical communications services underpinning Australia's Medicare and e-health systems, marking a significant vote of confidence in the carrier following recent cybersecurity challenges. The three-year deal, with potential extension to six years, was confirmed through a contract notification posted on the government's AusTender procurement website. The agreement consolidates Optus's position as a strategic telecommunications provider to the federal government. Under the arrangement, Optus will deliver what the company describes as 'a fully managed Network-as-a-Service (NaaS) solution for the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing, supporting its digital transformation.' The contract represents a consolidation of various telecommunications services previously spread across multiple arrangements. Optus has historically maintained substantial portions of the Health Department's carrier contracts, but the new deal brings together disparate services under a unified framework. The award comes as the Albanese government prioritizes securing core digital infrastructure supporting Medicare and broader e-health services. The telecommunications backbone provided under the contract will underpin the delivery of essential health services to millions of Australians. The deal also signals renewed government confidence in Optus following a turbulent period for the carrier. The company was among several major Australian corporations targeted by Russian-linked ransomware attacks, drawing criticism from former Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil. The cyberattacks resulted in the application of sanctions following what officials described as malicious raids on critical infrastructure providers. Despite these security challenges, the Health Department's decision to award the substantial contract to Optus suggests the government views the carrier as having adequately addressed previous vulnerabilities. The Network-as-a-Service model allows the Health Department to access telecommunications infrastructure without the need for significant capital investment in physical network equipment, while ensuring reliable connectivity for critical health system operations. The contract timeline provides flexibility for both parties, with the initial three-year term allowing for performance evaluation before potential extension to the full six-year period. This structure enables the government to maintain service continuity while preserving options for future procurement decisions. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

At least 36 Palestinians killed in shooting near Gaza aid site, health ministry says

At least 36 Palestinians were killed while attempting to get aid in southern Gaza on Tuesday, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Ministry of Health. This is the highest death toll from a shooting near an aid distribution center in Gaza since the opening of the U.S.- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation aid distribution sites last month, according to numbers from the health ministry. The shooting happened when Israeli forces opened fire near an aid distribution site in central Gaza on Tuesday morning, according to two local hospitals in Gaza. Over 100 people were injured in the shooting, according to the two hospitals. The Israel Defense Forces said in a statement it fired "warning shots to distance suspects," who were advancing in the area and "posed a threat to troops." The IDF said the warning shots were fired 'hundreds of meters form the aid distribution site,' before it opened in the statement. "The IDF is aware of reports regarding several individuals injured in the area," it said. "An initial inquiry suggests that the number of reported individuals injured does not align with the information held by the IDF." "The details are under review," the IDF said. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation -- which has been running aid distribution in Gaza since Israel lifted its 11-week blockade last month -- resumed aid distribution on Monday after previous shootings near aid sites, saying it gave out 1,386,000 meals at two sites. The GHF has not specified what it considers a meal. The GHF has closed its aid distribution sites several times since it began distributing meals after several shooting incidents. As of Tuesday, at least 163 people had been killed while trying to get aid from GHF aid distribution sites, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. The blockade was instituted to pressure Hamas to release the remaining hostages taken during Hamas' surprise terror attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed 1,200 people and led to the capture of hundreds, Israel said. The GHF was first announced on May 19 -- three days after the Israeli government began its increased military operation in Gaza. After the end of an 11-week Israeli blockade on aid entering Gaza, the GHF -- a private contractor backed by the U.S. and Israel -- took over distributing aid in Gaza. Humanitarian groups and the United Nations have said the GHF politicizes aid and criticized the role of IDF forces in the operation. Palestinians in Gaza remain at risk of extreme starvation and famine even after Israel lifted the blockade on all humanitarian aid entering the Strip, according to aid groups like the U.N., the International Committee of the Red Cross and others.
