Notts v Somerset, Essex v Warks, and more: county cricket day four
Date: 2025-08-01T09:15:48.000Z
Title: Thursday's round up
Content: Surrey went clear of the rest at Chester-le-Street, a three-day win against Durham that puts them in prime position to swan gracefully in and collect their fourth Championship on the trot, with just three matches left in the season. India's tall, elegant, slow left-armer Sai Kishore did exactly what he was signed for, zinging the Kookaburra through Durham, finishing with five for 72.
Meanwhile Jordan Clark gave the Overtons a run for their money by hitting younger brother Graham, who had batted very nicely for 42, on the grill with a stinging bouncer. Surrey, needing 176 for victory, had a mild wobble when they lost Ryan Patel and Rory Burns in consecutive overs, but 40 from Sam Curran set the sails fair.
Things don't look so rosy for Durham who, if Yorkshire win on Friday, have their boots in the relegation zone. Durham must also ride disquiet from members, who were unhappy to be told at an evening forum that the club would be voting for a conference structure for 2026.
Nottinghamshire, who were sitting on Surrey's coat-tails before this round, look certain to slip further behind despite a wonderful 208 from Haseeb Hameed, which made him the leading run-scorer in Division One. With the game still marooned in the first innings, and Somerset bowling with a 151-over ball, a draw seems inevitable.
Matthew Revis danced to his third century in July, his unbeaten 152 putting Yorkshire in a dominant position at North Marine Road. Sussex, 323 runs behind on first-innings, made a dog's breakfast of the start of their second, perhaps unnerved by the bangs coming from the naval warfare re-enactment at nearby Peasholm Park – three times a week in the school holidays. Imam-ul-Haq's swooping run out and throw-down from extra cover to dismiss Tom Alsop would have had uncle Inzamam's approval, if from the sofa. Unbeaten fifties from Daniel Hughes and Danial Ibrahim gave Sussex something to chew on overnight.
Centuries from Justin Broad and Rob Keogh bulldozed Northants to 550-9dec, weary Derbyshire then lost four wickets. Sonny Baker's five wickets for Hampshire will have given his Lions' tour prospects a boost, Jake Libby propped up Worcestershire with an unbeaten 100. Nightwatchman Ethan Bamber flew to his first first-class century and helped Warwickshire avoid the follow-on at Chelmsford. And Lancashire had a bad day at Old Trafford, finishing with half the side out and 247 runs needed. Just 9.5 overs were possible at Canterbury and there was no play at Cheltenham.

Pope's form, Stokes' fitness and pace options – the questions facing England
There are just over three months until England arrive in Perth and the planning can now begin in earnest. Here, the PA news agency looks at five key questions England need to answer. Will Ben Stokes be fully fit? England are a completely different team when their inspirational captain is firing on all cylinders. He was in brilliant form this summer, rolling back the years with ball in hand, but missed the Kia Oval decider with a shoulder problem. A six-to-10-week lay-off will follow but any further setbacks would raise serious alarms. Having been struck down by knee, hip, hamstring and shoulder injuries in the past two years, is it too optimistic to expect him to be in peak condition throughout a gruelling tour? What is the pace bowling pecking order? England have talked up the importance of building deep reserves of fast bowlers but when the first Test kicks off in Perth they must be clear on their best combination. Jofra Archer looks certain to be in it after his long-awaited comeback, Mark Wood hopes to be back after missing the entire Test season, while Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Jamie Overton, Chris Woakes and Sam Cook all played this summer. Woakes looks like missing out with a dislocated shoulder, but how do the others stack up? How do they get the best out of Ollie Pope? A big hundred against Zimbabwe and another century in his first knock against India removed some of the questions that had been circling about Pope's spot at number three. But he finished the series averaging 34 and was 10th on the run-scoring charts. Jacob Bethell's disappointing effort in the fifth Test against India has weakened his case as a replacement but England need more from a senior player in a key position. Could taking the vice-captaincy off him and promoting white-ball skipper Harry Brook be part of the answer? Is the spin situation settled? A lot of faith has been placed in Shoaib Bashir, with England backing their hunch that he can do well in Australia. It has been a mixed bag so far, with 68 wickets in 19 Tests but a stubbornly high average of 39. His broken finger opened the door for them to have an overdue second look at Liam Dawson, but the county scene's standard-bearer was dropped after taking one for 140 at Old Trafford. Will he travel as competition for Bashir, could there be a return to Jack Leach or might England look at using all-pace attacks for some Ashes contests? How will they prepare for the war of words? Australian players, fans and media cheerleaders have been paying close attention to the India series and it is has not been hard to realise the long-range sledging has already started. From David Warner's recent jibe at Joe Root to the social media barrage about the merits, or otherwise, of 'Bazball', the heat is already rising. Expect that to continue all the way until Glenn McGrath shockingly predicts a 5-0 win for Australia. England have refused to entertain much Ashes talk in recent months but the temptation will rise as the weeks tick by. Will they fire some broadsides of their own or keep things on the field?

Scott Brown says Ayr will heed Championship warning and sets sights on home comforts
The manager is looking for his Ayr side to set the right tone when Raith visit town this Saturday. Scott Brown insists Ayr can heed their Championship warning with a quick return to form. United made a slow start at Arbroath on Friday night, in which they laboured for much of the league curtain raiser. Brown admits Ayr will need to up their game dramatically to be at the sharp end this season - but says the opening day draw has focused minds on what's required. He told the Ayrshire Post: 'We know how difficult this league can be from one week to the next. Friday night just proved that. 'The thing that frustrated me the most was how we fell into the trap of going long to our two strikers all night. 'We needed to show more composure on the ball and I hoped that getting the early goal would have allowed us to kick on.' Ayr have a chance to set the tone on home soil when they welcome Raith this Saturday. United were strong at Somerset last season and Brown wants more of the same this time. He said: 'We'll look to use the surface to our advantage and get it down and play. We've got good footballers in the team and we need to make the most of them.' Meanwhile, Brown has acknowledged the ongoing miss that is skipper Ben Dempsey, who has been sidelined since the end of last season with a knee injury. United's influential captain has seen a specialist in a bid to cure the problem and will not be rushed back as he bids to return. Brown said: "Ben is the captain of the club and a massive player for us. So not having him around is a blow. He sets the tempo for everyone and was tremendous for us last season. 'The priority has been getting him back in with us and we're building him up from there. We're starting to see progress on that now." Kevin Holt underwent a small operation on his groin last week but is not expected to miss much game time. Stuart Bannigan is back in training following an interrupted pre-season, with Brown keen to see what he adds to the squad. The boss said: 'It's been frustrating for Banzo as he's had a couple of niggles and missed a lot of the work. So that's put him behind. 'But when he does come back in he'll add that bit of experience in there.' Anton Dowds is continuing his long road back from injury but United won't rush the striker, who ruptured his ACL last September. United want to add a defender from Celtic as part of the co-op deal rubber stamped last week. Kyle Ure and Jude Bonnar have already made the move from Parkhead.
