Temperatures across Japan to rise sharply on Sunday, raising heatstroke risk

NHK18-05-2025
Temperatures are expected to rise sharply across wide areas of Japan on Sunday, with summer-like weather above 30 degrees Celsius expected in the eastern region of Kanto-Koshin.
Officials are calling on people planning outdoor activities in the areas to be affected to take precautions against heatstroke, such as a frequent intake of salt and water.
The Japan Meteorological Agency says daytime highs will reach 30 degrees Celsius in the cities of Kofu in Yamanashi Prefecture, Saitama in Saitama Prefecture and Maebashi in Gunma Prefecture.
Daytime highs of 29 degrees Celsius are expected in the cities of Kyoto, Nagoya and Fukushima, as well as central Tokyo, and 28 degrees Celsius in Kochi City. These temperatures are as high as those usually seen in late June to mid-July.
The meteorological agency also expects that atmospheric conditions will become extremely unstable, mainly in the Kanto region in the afternoon, and the weather could suddenly change with the possibility of thunderstorms.
Caution is advised against lightning strikes, gusts, and strong winds such as tornadoes, sudden downpours and hail.
People are also advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings when there are signs of thunderclouds approaching.

Searing heat in Japan to persist for a month, boosting power use

High temperatures across much of Japan are set to last for another month, according to the national weather forecaster, with the persistent heat potentially keeping power demand elevated. A high-pressure system that keeps warm air near the surface has caused prolonged hot weather in Japan since June, the Meteorological Agency said in a bulletin on Tuesday. Many cities have seen temperatures well above average in the past two months, with Sapporo recording levels more than 4 degrees Celsius above normal. The country has broken several temperature records during this year's summer, with the outlook for rising cooling demand seen boosting prices on Japan's spot power market. Continued dryness may also hit hydropower production. Last month, Tohoku Electric Power suspended operations at its Naruko power plant in Miyagi Prefecture due to drought. If the heat and dryness continue and hydropower generation falls, Japan may need to rely more on liquefied natural gas to meet its power requirements. On the agriculture front, the key rice-producing regions of Tohoku and Hokuriku are witnessing less than half their usual rainfall in the two months to Monday, the weather bureau said. That's raising risks to the nation's staple grain at a time of growing public resentment over the cost of living.

Sweltering heat continues across wide regions of Japan

Japanese authorities are urging extra precautions against heatstroke as daytime highs may hit nearly 40 degrees Celsius on Monday in some inland areas of the Kanto and Tokai regions. The Meteorological Agency says a high-pressure system covering wide regions of the country is driving up temperatures. By 11:30 a.m., the mercury had risen to 37.3 degrees in Ome City in Tokyo, 36.9 degrees in Ebina City in Kanagawa Prefecture, 36.4 degrees in Hamamatsu City in Shizuoka Prefecture, 36.1 degrees in central Tokyo and 35.1 degrees in Nagoya. Daytime highs of 39 degrees are forecast for Maebashi City in Gunma Prefecture and Kumagaya City in Saitama Prefecture, Nagoya, and Gifu, and 38 degrees for Kofu City in Yamanashi Prefecture. Heatstroke alerts have been issued for 23 of the country's 47 prefectures, from the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo, to the Kyushu region. Officials are advising people to keep cool by using air conditioners, consuming adequate fluids and salt. Atmospheric conditions are likely to become extremely unstable in Kanto-Koshin, and in western Japan and elsewhere due partly to rising temperatures and damp air. Localized downpours with thunder are possible. Caution is advised for flooding in low-lying areas, landslides and swollen rivers. People are asked to be on the alert for lightning strikes, gusty winds, including tornadoes, and hail. In the southwestern prefecture of Okinawa, a tropical depression south-southeast of Miyakojima Island is expected to develop into a tropical storm by Monday night. The storm may approach the Sakishima Islands and Okinawa's main island through Tuesday, bringing heavy rain and strong winds. People are asked to keep updated with the latest weather information.
