Uber Eats is stuffing AI slop into your meal
AI-enhanced food images are intended to make dishes more appealing by improving photos uploads. In the press release , Uber Eats shows an example in which pictures captured very close to the food are transformed into wider field-of-view shots of plated dishes. Because the tool creates portions of the image that were not there before, its accuracy remains to be seen.
Menu descriptions will also get the AI treatment with the idea being to ensure their accuracy so that customers feel more confident in what they're ordering. It will also summarize restaurant reviews, with the goal of highlighting areas for improvement as well as strengths. Much like the generated images, the jury is still out on if these tools will be useful, or another vector for hallucinations .
Uber is inviting users to send photos of delivered food for items that lack menu images. Customers in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom can earn $3 in Uber Cash for their pictures.
"Live order chat" will finally allow merchants to initiate conversations directly with customers once an order has been placed.

Lucid Q2 earnings preview: Gravity SUV ramp, path to profitability big questions for investors
Pure-play EV maker Lucid (LCID) will report second quarter results after the bell as the company ramps up production of its Gravity SUV and hopes to assuage investors' fears over a lack of profitability. Meanwhile, Lucid stock is down over 20% year to date. Lucid is expected to report Q2 revenue of $262.4 million, per Bloomberg consensus estimates, higher than the $200.6 million reported a year ago. Lucid is expected to post an adjusted EPS loss of $0.22, with an adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) loss of $603.6 million. The company has had a busy 2025 so far, including the start of low-volume production of the Gravity SUV. Early last month, Lucid said it produced 3,863 vehicles and delivered 3,309 vehicles in the second quarter, with its total for the first half of the year hitting 6,075 vehicles produced and 6,418 vehicle deliveries. Read more: Live coverage of corporate earnings Lucid also announced in July that it would partner with Uber (UBER) to create a robotaxi service run by the ride-hailing company, which will purchase 20,000 Lucid EVs over the next five years. The company also added access to the Tesla (TSLA) Supercharger network for its vehicles, unlocking more than 23,000 new chargers for use. Lucid also initiated plans to perform a 10-to-one reverse stock split, which won't occur until later this year. In terms of guidance, Lucid said in the past that it expects 2025 production to hit 20,000 EVs, more than double the 9,029 it produced last year. The company also said it would launch its upcoming midsize-volume SUV in 2026, which is expected to help the company increase scale and bring it closer to profitability. Profitability is the big question mark for the company. Given its production and expected loss figures, Lucid is expected to post an adjusted EBITDA loss figure of around $161,000 per car produced. On the earnings call, analysts likely will be asking management about how the company intends to bridge itself to profitability in the near future. Rivian (RIVN), for example, has achieved gross profit in its operations. The expected loss of the $7,500 federal tax credit on Sept. 30 is also likely to put a dent in Lucid's sales. Lucid is able to receive the credit for all of its vehicles via a lease loophole known as the "commercial clean vehicle credit." Pras Subramanian is the lead auto reporter for Yahoo Finance. This startup offered ride-hailing for women years before Uber and Lyft — and its founder isn't shying away from the competition
Uber is starting to let women request women drivers. It's about time, says Jillian Anderson. Anderson founded HERide, which started offering rides in Atlanta in 2022 — three years before Uber announced last month that it would start allowing women to request female drivers on its app. Anderson said she got the idea for HERide while working as a ride-hailing driver herself. Many of the women Anderson picked up after dark told her that male drivers often asked to take the ride off-app or tried to get their contact information, she told Business Insider. "After hearing endless stories like that for a couple years, I was like, this sounds like a feature that Uber and Lyft could just create," Anderson said. "Why haven't they implemented anything like this?" Instead of waiting for the companies to act, Anderson said she started coding her own app, recruiting women drivers, and creating HERide as an alternative. Today, the app operates in Atlanta, including at Hartsfield—Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as well as nearby Athens, Georgia. While ride-hailing is nothing new for most Americans, apps like HERide — and Uber's newest feature, called "Women Preferences" — show one potential avenue for growth in the industry: Offering special rides and services to specific groups of people, from women to older people. Uber said in July that it would pilot its rides-for-women feature in a handful of cities. Already, the company offers rides for teens and a simplified version of the app for senior citizens. Lyft also has an option for women and nonbinary riders to request a woman driver. Besides women, HERide also markets its service to LGBTQ+ clients, DeVynne Starks, the company's cofounder and director of marketing and communications, told Business Insider. "We don't just want only women to be safe," she said. "We truly do want to enforce safer ride-sharing practices for everyone." With Uber unveiling its own rides-for-women feature, HERide is now betting that it will have an edge over its bigger competitors in the places where it operates. Anderson points to one advantage: HERide guarantees riders a woman driver. Uber, meanwhile, says that its Women Preferences feature "increases your chances of being matched with a woman driver," though "it's not guaranteed." Another is that HERide uses a rate card to determine its fares instead of fluctuating rates based on demand or an even more complicated model like Uber's upfront pricing, Anderson said. Before they ride, HERide's users can use a fare estimator widget that Anderson said she coded herself and added to the ride-hailing service's website. "It's probably the No. 1 question that we get before people actually download the app," she said about the price of rides. HERide drivers, meanwhile, get 80% of each fare for rides that they complete, though Anderson says that that will be closer to 70% in the future to make the company profitable. Some Uber and Lyft drivers have told Business Insider that they often get less than half of the fare that customers pay. Anderson said that she wants to retain drivers, including those who make ride-hailing their full-time job. "If we're paying them a fair wage, I believe that we'll stay competitive in the space," Anderson said.
