Iowa football transfer DL 'too good to be true'

USA Today2 days ago
Iowa DL coach Kelvin Bell confirmed some of the hype surrounding South Dakota State transfer DT, Bryce Hawthorne this afternoon:'I'm really excited about him. He practices with high energy, he's a violent kid, super smart — he's almost too good to be true.' pic.twitter.com/mbPxsOxwXy
The focus of the Iowa Hawkeyes' transfer portal additions is on quarterback Mark Gronowski, and it makes sense. He plays the most important position in all of sports and is a large reason for the continuously growing buzz around the Hawkeyes heading into 2025.
He isn't the only addition from the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, though. Also coming to Iowa is defensive lineman Bryce Hawthrone, who is already making waves early with the Hawkeyes as he figures to become a key cog on an already dominant defensive front. Iowa defensive line coach Kelvin Bell has high praise for Hawthorne already.
"Yeah, he's pretty good. He's a guy that we had in camp twice, and I didn't take him. You can't always be right, but we got him, and I'm really excited about him. He practices with high energy. Violent kid. Super smart. Almost too good to be true," said Kelvin Bell, Iowa's defensive line coach.
"He had a 4.0 last semester. This kid is not uptight, he's just one of the guys. Both him and Jonah have come into our room and fallen right into line with how we want to do things and the things that we value, and the things that are important are important to those guys, too. So, they were both really good gets," Bell continued.
Like so many Iowa stars, Hawthorne was under-recruited out of high school. A product of Osseo Senior High School in Osseo, Minnesota, Hawthorne only received FCS offers to South Dakota State, Bemidji State, Minnesota State Mankato, Minnesota State University Moorhead, and St. Thomas.
After choosing to join the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, Hawthorne blossomed. In two years, he appeared in 17 games, tallying 27 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and 4.5 sacks. He joins an experienced and talented defensive line group of Aaron Graves, Ethan Hurkett, and Max Llewellyn, whom he can spell and carve out his own role amid.

WATCH: Mike Norvell discusses FSU's second scrimmage

The Florida State Seminoles held their second scrimmage of fall camp on Sunday, and head coach Mike Norvell met with the media afterwards to break down what happened. One player who stood out was Micahi Danzy, who is moving to wide receiver after starting his career at running back. "Another guy who stood out was Micahi Danzy, who had a couple of nice plays," he said. "He showed some looseness, especially on a short pass, and had a solid run. He did some good things with those opportunities" Not only is he learning a new position, but he was also limited in the spring as he competed with the track team. However, Norvell is pleased with what he has seen from the Tallahassee native. "I think he's growing in that confidence, and we still want more from him. When he gets opportunities to go produce, he's showing up. He's done a good job," he said. Norvell also discussed how Tommy Castellanos looked, James Williams, the offensive line, and more. 2025 Iowa Football Predictions: Hawkeyes Ranked 29th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136

College Football 2025 Iowa Football Predictions: Hawkeyes Ranked 29th in RJ Young's Ultimate 136 Published Aug. 10, 2025 9:56 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link This isn't your average college football ranking. My Ultimate 136 is a set of rankings that is fluid, but it's my job to look ahead and make a claim for all FBS teams based on what I know and why I know it. Here are the three pressing questions I started by asking when putting together this list: Who do I think is good? Why do I think they're good? What are the chances they will finish above or below my expectations? Here is a look at where Iowa lands in my Ultimate 136. Iowa ranking: 29 Last year's ranking: 24 Top player: DL Aaron Graves: Named to the Lott Trophy preseason award watch list, started all 13 games last season and finished with 6 sacks, 8 tackles for loss and 3 forced fumbles. [Iowa's 2025 schedule] RJ's take: The addition of former South Dakota State All-American quarterback and national championship QB Mark Gronowski is the best recruit Kirk Ferentz has ever had at the position. Gronowski has passed for over 10,000 yards, won the Walter Payton Award — best offensive player in the FCS — and is 49-6 as a starter. ADVERTISEMENT Hawkeyes fans have ached for a functional passing offense for nearly a decade, and they got a taste of that last year before Cade McNamara went down with injury. This year they'll get a QB who is not just a capable passer but a runner to pair with Phil Parker's annually tough defense. [ Check out RJ Young's Ultimate 136 College Football Rankings here ] Iowa Win Total Odds: Over 7.5 (+136) Under 7.5 (-168) Have an issue with my rankings?
