Ben Shapiro Says Trump's Tariff Reversal Wasn't 4D Chess – 'It Was Just People Getting Yippy And Bond Markets Getting Queasy'

Stocks didn't just stumble—they cratered. From April 3 to April 8, the S&P 500 slid 12%, the Nasdaq Composite dropped 13%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 11% as investors digested President 's sweeping "Liberation Day" tariffs.
After the rout, Trump stepped into the White House press briefing room on April 9 and paused most levies for 90 days.
One day later, commentator Ben Shapiro told listeners of "The Ben Shapiro Show" that the U‑turn had nothing to do with "4‑D chess." Instead, he said, "it was just people getting yippy and bond markets getting queasy."

Trump announced a 10% tariff on some imports and a hefty 145% tariff specifically on Chinese goods during a speech in Washington on April 2.
Those headline figures, paired with warnings from economists, fed the week‑long sell‑off Business Insider chronicled, while The Guardian traced the China tariff to the administration's "America First" reset.
By April 8, bond traders were in full retreat. The 10‑year Treasury yield jumped to 4.26%, its sharpest three‑day climb since 1982, Reuters reported. Higher yields pushed up borrowing costs and amplified worries that tariff‑driven inflation would hit households already wrestling with rising prices.

The Wall Street Journal reported within minutes, futures turned green, and by the closing bell the S&P 500 had rebounded 9.5% while the Nasdaq soared 12.2%.
Shapiro replayed Trump's explanation—"people were getting yippy... bond markets getting queasy"—and laughed at claims of hidden strategy.
Institutional investors echoed the skepticism. On April 17, PIMCO said recent U.S. trade policies were weakening the dollar's traditional safe-haven appeal, prompting the firm to recommend trimming exposure to long-dated Treasuries in favor of global alternatives.
Global institutions also flagged risks. International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said April 3 in a statement that newly announced U.S. tariffs "represent a significant risk to the global outlook at a time of sluggish growth," urging the U.S. and its trading partners to resolve tensions and avoid steps that could "further harm the world economy."Academic models suggest the U.S. economy could face significant domestic costs from the tariffs. According to the Yale Budget Lab, Trump's tariff package— combined with anticipated foreign retaliation — could reduce U.S. real GDP growth by 1.1 percentage points and result in 740,000 fewer payroll jobs by December.
Lawmakers sensed an opening. Time reported April 10 that Sen. Adam Schiff (D‑CA) called for an insider‑trading probe to see whether anyone profited from advance knowledge of the pause, a step backed by several House Democrats .

Op-Ed: Tory Lanez Is Still Lying About What He Did To Megan Thee Stallion

Source: It is not a coincidence that as Megan Thee Stallion was launching her latest venture —a swimwear line through Walmart —Tory Lanez decided to launch another misinformation campaign designed to stoke anger towards her. Tory and his lawyers recently launched the site '36 Hours Later,' which includes supposed evidence that exonerates him. This alleged new evidence includes bodycam footage and witness statements alleging that Megan's former friend, Kelsey Harris, was the actual shooter. There is also a video, which has already circulated widely, that depicts Megan Thee Stallion explaining to police officers that she wasn't shot, but glass-injured. 'I really cannot go to jail. I cannot have that on my image…' she is heard saying. Tory Lanez can be heard in that same video reassuring her, saying, 'I was just trying to help my girlfriend. Mego don't worry it's gonna be okay.' For some on the internet – presumably those who struggle with critical thinking – this site caused them to question whether Megan was even shot at all. This, despite Megan telling us years ago on the internet and later in trial that she initially tried to protect Tory, her shooter, from police, by saying that she wasn't shot. There is also the photographic evidence of her foot being shot that was presented in court. BECAUSE HE SHOT HER. 🚨: New developments in the Tory Lanez case have surfaced during a FOX 11 Los Angeles live stream. Kelsey Harris's bodyguard has reportedly come forward, claiming that Kelsey Harris, not Tory Lanez, allegedly was the one who 💥 Megan. He wanted to come clean about the truth — Boochie is the Name (@stoppfeenin) May 14, 2025 All this site does is repackage the same claims made a month ago at the press conference his lawyers held that generated a lot of buzz in the he-man woman-hating corners of the internet, but didn't make any kind of noise in a courtroom. Megan's attorney, Alex Spiro, quickly dismissed claims made on the site by Tory and his legal team. 'Tory Lanez's team can't keep a story straight.' Spiro said. 'Last week, they argued that Kelsey Harris shot Megan and now, they're claiming that Megan only stepped on glass. They continue to rehash old evidence from trial and re-package it as new information to desperately sway public opinion.' Additionally, Meg's legal team released a 31-page presentation countering Tory's claims, stressing how, again , much of this so-called new evidence was already presented at trial. To remind Tory and the others falling for his lies, they presented him with the text messages in which he apologized to Megan shortly after the shooting, ring camera audio capturing five gun shots, and DNA evidence indicating a 90% probability that the male DNA on the firearm belonged to…Tory Lanez. BECAUSE HE SHOT HER. Members of Megan's legal team have even stepped into The Shade Room recently in order to further penetrate the wave of disinformation Tory and his team have flooded in those spaces. Other journalists who followed the trial are doing their part to swat away Tory's lies as well. BECAUSE HE SHOT HER. I pray their efforts will help stop some of the more embarrassing displays of Tory Lanez from various celebrities as of late stop already. Like Nicci Gilbert from Brownstone, who in a recent interview with BHighTV, expressed regret for rushing to judgment and said that her initial shock over the allegations led her to 'jump on' the 'shame on him bandwagon.' 'I was wrong,' Gilbert said. 'I jumped on the bandwagon without fully understanding the case.' 'I want to say this. If there was evidence that was suppressed. If there was any possibility that Tory did not do this, that man deserves a retrial,' she added. If Nicci Gilbert wants to issue public apologies, consider one of her former castmates on R&B Divas , not the Canadian menace trying to further torment the woman he victimized. Tory Lanez has already been denied a new trial, which is likely why stars such as Drake, Chris Brown, Ty Dolla $ign, Ye formerly Kanye West, Amber Rose, Kodak Black, Trippie Redd, among others, have been promoting the petition calling on Governor Newsom to pardon him. It's not coincidental that the famous people rallying behind a famous person accused of harming a woman are famous men who have been accused of harming women or are women known for supporting abusive men. Their lil' petition has over 382,000 signatures, but if I could set that petition on fire, I would. If I could revoke the internet status of each signator, I would. If anyone can save Megan Thee Stallion from continuing to be tormented by this exhausting menace who can't accept the consequences of his actions, they should immediately. I'm sure some who signed feel bad that Lanez was recently stabbed in prison by another inmate, but even the stories behind that incident are fanciful. Nothing this man says ought to be trusted because Tory Lanez is a liar, as proven in court, and years before it, on the internet. For all the noise he seeks to make, Tory Lanez will stay in prison until the end of his sentence. This is all nothing more than a pathetic attempt to rile up the Negro incenl community to generate a public pressure campaign against Megan Thee Stallion and the legal system. My anger is rooted in how successful it has been concerning Megan. Megan expressed frustration over the internet's treatment of her on May 20 in a post to TikTok. 'At what point are y'all gonna stop making me have to re-live being shot BY TORY !?' she asked. 'At what point are Tory and y'all FANS gonna stop lying? Like how much is the check to keep harassing me? Why is this happening EVERY DAY??' You could see many of the comments under the posts intended to celebrate the launch of her line. Those negative comments have scaled back a bit as more of her fans, us Hotties, drown out the hate. But she shouldn't have to still live like this. Addressing Tory directly, Megan concluded her statement with: 'YOU SHOT ME !! Ain't no new f—–g evidence y'all been saying the same s–t for years. TORY, PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE you a f—–g demon. I'm off this silly a– internet s–t, BYE.' I've written about abusive men in culture and politics for a long time now, and I have never seen so many people rally behind such a marginally talented man that's done nothing but shoot a woman. Much as I do fault misinformation, I mostly marvel at how much misogyny is at the root of so many choosing willful ignorance and siding with Tory Lanez. As long as I've been writing, I still struggle with the words to illustrate just how depressing I find this reality that no matter what facts are thrown at them, some of my people are choosing to side with an abuser. Scoop: DNC rents taco truck to mock Trump on 'TACO' slogan

The Democratic National Committee is commandeering a taco truck to mock Trump's apparent fury at the slogan " Trump Always Chickens Out," or "TACO," Axios has learned. Why it matters: Democrats clearly think they have found a way to get under the president's skin. Trump was asked about the mantra — used by Wall Street traders to predict his response to tariff-induced market dips — at a press conference Wednesday, and he lashed out in response. "Don't ever say what you said. That's a nasty question," the president replied. Driving the news: The DNC will park a taco truck outside the Republican National Committee's headquarters on Capitol Hill with a graphic of Trump in a chicken suit and the "Trump Always Chickens Out" slogan. The truck will be there between noon and 2pm on Tuesday and will actually serve free tacos, a DNC spokesperson told Axios. What they're saying: "With his idiotic trade policy, he talks a big game, caves, and then leaves working families and small businesses to deal with the fallout," DNC chair Ken Martin said in a statement. "Trump always chickens out — we're just bringing the tacos to match." The other side: "LMFAO. A taco truck? Are they going to be giving out free vasectomies again too?" RNC spokesperson Zach Parkinson said in a statement, citing a past DNC pro-abortion initiative.

Newark mayor sues New Jersey's top federal prosecutor after arrest at immigration detention site

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Newark Mayor Ras Baraka sued New Jersey's top federal prosecutor on Tuesday over his arrest on a trespassing charge at a federal immigration detention facility, saying the Trump-appointed attorney had pursued the case out of political spite. Baraka, who leads New Jersey's biggest city, is a candidate in a crowded primary field for the Democratic nomination for governor next Tuesday. The lawsuit against interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba coincided with the day early in-person voting began. The lawsuit seeks damages for 'false arrest and malicious prosecution,' and also accuses Habba of defamation for comments she made about his case, which was later dropped. Citing a post on X in which Habba said Baraka 'committed trespass,' the lawsuit says Habba issued a 'defamatory statement' and authorized his 'false arrest' despite 'clear evidence that Mayor Baraka had not committed the petty offense of 'defiant trespass.'' The suit also names Ricky Patel, the Homeland Security Investigations agent in charge in Newark. 'This is not about revenge,' Baraka said during a news conference. 'Ultimately, it's about them taking accountability for what they did.' Emails seeking comment were left Tuesday with Habba's office and the Homeland Security Department, where Patel works. The episode outside the Delaney Hall federal immigration detention center has had dramatic fallout. It began on May 9 when Baraka tried to join three Democratic members of Congress — Rob Menendez, LaMonica McIver and Bonnie Watson Coleman — who went to the facility for an oversight tour, something authorized under federal law. Baraka, an outspoken critic of Trump's immigration crackdown and the detention center, was denied entry. Video from the event showed him walking from the facility side of the fence to the street side, where other people had been protesting, and then uniformed officials came to arrest him. As they did, people could be heard in the video saying to protect the mayor. The video shows a crowd forming and pushing as officials led off a handcuffed Baraka. He was initially charged with trespass, but Habba dropped that charge last month and charged McIver with two counts of assaulting officers stemming from her role in the skirmish at the facility's gate. U.S. Magistrate Judge Andre Espinosa rebuked Habba's office after moving to dismiss the charges. 'The hasty arrest of Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, followed swiftly by the dismissal of these trespassing charges a mere 13 days later, suggests a worrisome misstep by your Office,' he wrote. McIver decried the charges and signaled she plans to fight them. A preliminary hearing is scheduled later this month. Delaney Hall, a 1,000-bed facility, opened earlier this year as a federal immigration detention facility. Florida-based Geo Group Inc., which owns and operates the property, was awarded a 15-year contract valued at $1 billion in February. The announcement was part of the president's plans to sharply increase detention beds nationwide from a budget of about 41,000 beds this year. Baraka sued Geo soon after that deal was announced. Then, on May 23, the Trump Justice Department filed a suit against Newark and three other New Jersey cities over their so-called sanctuary policies. There is no legal definition for sanctuary city policies, but they generally limit cooperation by local law enforcement with federal immigration officers. New Jersey's attorney general has a statewide directive in place prohibiting local police from collaborating in federal civil immigration matters. The policies are aimed at barring cooperation on civil enforcement matters, not at blocking cooperation on criminal matters. They specifically carve out exceptions for when Immigration and Customs Enforcement supplies police with a judicial criminal warrant. The Justice Department said, though, the cities won't notify ICE when they've made criminal arrests, according to the suit. It's unclear whether Baraka's role in these fights with the Trump administration is having an effect on his campaign for governor. He's one of six candidates seeking the Democratic nomination in the June 10 election to succeed term-limited Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy. In a video ad in the election's final weeks, Baraka has embraced a theme his rivals are also pushing: affordability. He says he'll cut taxes. While some of the images show him standing in front of what appears to be Delaney Hall, he doesn't mention immigration or the arrest specifically, saying: 'I'll keep Trump out of your homes and out of your lives.' Trump has endorsed Jack Ciattarelli, one of several Republicans running in the gubernatorial primary. Ciattarelli has said if he's elected, his first executive order would be to end any sanctuary policies for immigrants in the country illegally. ___ Associated Press writer Alanna Durkin Richer in Washington contributed to this report.
