Moe Odum helps Pepperdine upset Santa Clara 78-76 West Coast Conference Tournament quarterfinal
The ninth-seeded Waves (13-21) move on to play No. 1 seed Saint Mary's in a Monday semifinal. Pepperdine opened the tournament with an 86-73 victory over No. 8 seed before knocking out No. 5 seed Oregon State 77-73.
Odum also snared five rebounds for the Waves. Stefan Todorovic hit three 3-pointers and also scored 19. Dovydas Butka had 13 points.
Tyeree Bryan finished with 18 points to lead the Broncos (20-12). Brenton Knapper added 17 points and Johnny O'Neil pitched in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Pepperdine trailed 40-36 at halftime but used a 7-0 run to take a 58-56 lead with 9:15 left in the game. Zion Bethea made two free throws with three seconds left to give the Waves a five-point lead. Bryan hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Nick Kyrgios withdraws from the US Open and will miss another major tournament
NEW YORK (AP) — Nick Kyrgios withdrew from the U.S. Open on Thursday, the third straight year the Australian has missed the last Grand Slam tournament of the season. Kyrgios has battled injuries in recent years and had missed most of the 2023 and 2024 seasons before trying to return this year. After undergoing wrist and knee surgeries, he came back to play in the Australian Open, but lost in the first round. That was his first appearance in any major tournament since the 2022 U.S. Open. Kyrgios had his best performance in a Grand Slam event just before that, losing to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. Once ranked No. 13, he has played in just five singles matches on the ATP Tour this season, none since Miami in March. Humpy Wheeler, the 'P.T. Barnum of motorsports,' dies at 86
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Humpy Wheeler, a pioneering motorsports promoter and former president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway, has died, NASCAR said. He was 86. Charlotte Motor Speedway said Wheeler died Wednesday of natural causes surrounded by his family. 'Humpy Wheeler was a visionary whose name became synonymous with promotion and innovation in our sport,' said NASCAR chairman Jim France. 'During his decades leading Charlotte Motor Speedway, Humpy transformed the fan experience through his creativity, bold ideas and tireless passion. His efforts helped expand NASCAR's national footprint, cement Charlotte as a must-visit racing and entertainment complex.' Howard Augustine Wheeler Jr. was born in 1938 in Belmont and gained his first major publicity job with Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. He held several other positions after Firestone shut down its racing program in 1970 and was hired at Charlotte Motor Speedway by owner Bruton Smith as president in 1975. He became a transformative figure in promoting racing and was known as the 'P.T. Barnum of motorsports' for flashy pre-race stunts, elaborate productions and sparing no expense in ensuring fans had the most enjoyable experience possible at his events. Wheeler earlier this year was named winner of NASCAR's prestigious Landmark Award for Outstanding Contributions to NASCAR, to which he'd have been inducted into the Hall of Fame next year.
