KAPIT, June 26 (Bernama) -- A total of 40 infrastructure projects fully funded by the Sarawak government are being and will be implemented in the Kapit Division under the supervision of the Sarawak Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that all the projects involved an allocation of RM1.233 billion as part of the state government's ongoing efforts to drive rural development.
"Of the total, 19 projects have been fully completed while five others are currently being implemented with a total cost of RM116 million covering the construction of roads and bridges that are much needed by the rural population," he said.
According to him, the remaining 16 projects worth RM721 million are expected to be tendered this year.
"This reflects the Sarawak Government's continued commitment to ensuring that development is implemented comprehensively, especially in rural areas like Kapit," he said when officiating the groundbreaking ceremony for the Nanga Ibau/Ulu Sungai Ibau road here, today.
Uggah, who is also the Minister of Finance and New Economy II, said the road project involves the construction of a 12.5-kilometre road according to JKR R1 standards with a total value of RM99.9 million.
The project also includes the construction of two spur roads, three iron bridges, earthworks, the installation of concrete under-road water channels (culverts), a drainage system and the installation of road equipment.
He added that the project is scheduled to be completed within 36 months starting May 5, 2025, and is expected to benefit 11 longhouses involving 219 doors and almost 1,900 residents.
"This project will also provide better access to the Nanga Ibau Health Clinic and two primary schools, namely SK Nanga Ibau and SK Nanga Segenok," he explained.

Johor Expected To Be First State To Extend Use Of eCOSS System

ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 27 (Bernama) -- Johor is expected to be the first state to extend the use of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS) to the end user level, allowing every transaction involving subsidised packet cooking oil to be recorded digitally to curb leakages. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the phased implementation of the scheme is intended to ensure the system's stability and public acceptance before it is rolled out statewide. 'We need to pilot the eCOSS system at the consumer level first. Johor is expected to be the first state to implement it following test runs conducted through the Jualan Rahmah programme over the past three to four months,' he said. Armizan explained that consumers would be required to download the eCOSS application and scan a QR code each time they purchase a packet cooking oil. For now, the policy remains that only Malaysian citizens are allowed to buy subsidised cooking oil, he told a press conference after opening the southern zone 'Jelajah Karnival KPDN 2025' and the launch of the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) at the Puteri Harbour Convention centre here today. He said the move to extend the use of eCOSS is not aimed at reducing cooking oil subsidies, but rather as a transparent and targeted control mechanism. 'The subsidy is not reduced. But through this system, we have clear records - the number of boxes retailers received, who bought them, and how many were sold. However, we will not rush (into implementing it in Johor). 'Our focus is to ensure the system is truly stable and accepted by the people before it is expanded comprehensively,' he said. According to him, the current system only records distribution from the repackers to retailers.

PWD Urged To Intensify Use Of Modern Technology In Mega Projects

KAPIT, June 27 (Bernama) -- The Public Works Department (PWD) has been urged to intensify the use of modern technologies, including Building Information Modelling (BIM) and digital twinning, in the implementation of major projects such as the Pan Borneo Highway and rural road construction. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the use of such technology is important to ensure the quality, efficiency and cost of implementation are at optimum levels. 'This technology is no longer an option, but rather a necessity. I call on the Sarawak Public Works Department and all relevant agencies to establish close cooperation with the Ministry of Works to implement the pilot project in Kapit,' he said at the 2025 Ngiling Tikai Gawai Dayak event here last night.

South Korea-Malaysia FTA to deepen ties

KUALA LUMPUR: South Korean Ambassador to Malaysia, Yeo Seung Bae, expressed Seoul's strong commitment to concluding a free trade agreement (FTA) with Malaysia, saying the partnership is poised to become stronger and more comprehensive. Yeo said both leaders have reaffirmed their intention to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation across a wide range of sectors, including trade, investment, green growth, infrastructure, digital transformation, and the defence industry. "Having held more than nine rounds of negotiations, we have now entered the final phase. "So I expect when the two leaders meet, likely on the occasion of the ASEAN summit in late October, FTA negotiations will be finalised, which would be very good news for both peoples," he told Bernama. He said the Korea–Malaysia FTA is not merely a conventional trade and investment agreement, but a comprehensive one that also covers digital transition, the digital economy, the green economy, and the bio-economy. "These are so-called future industry, high-value, high-tech industry. So through this bilateral free trade agreement, not only Korean businesses or Korean people, but also Malaysian people and Malaysian people's businesses, farmers and even fishers will get some benefit. "Because the contents of FTA are not revealed publicly yet, so I cannot say more details about that, but what can I say, yes, we have a very promising future for both countries in terms of industry and business cooperation," he added. On June 23, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung agreed to expand bilateral cooperation in a substantive and mutually beneficial manner, including efforts to conclude the FTA. The understanding was reached during their first phone conversation, in which Anwar also extended his congratulations to Lee on his inauguration as South Korea's president. Yeo said under President Lee's new administration, which took office on June 4, South Korea is expected to pursue pragmatic diplomacy aimed at fostering peace and co-prosperity. "It is a bit early to say in detail because Korea's new government has been in office only three weeks, but the new President (President Lee) during the presidential election had made clear that the new government is expected to pursue pragmatic diplomacy and strengthen partnership with ASEAN. "This year is a special year for Korea and Malaysia. Malaysia chairs the ASEAN summit, and Korea will host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit meeting, so we expect to see frequent high-level engagement, including leaders' meetings," he added. South Korea is Malaysia's eighth-largest trading partner, with bilateral trade exceeding US$20 billion (US$1 = RM4.29) for three consecutive years.
