Johor Expected To Be First State To Extend Use Of eCOSS System
ISKANDAR PUTERI, June 27 (Bernama) -- Johor is expected to be the first state to extend the use of the Cooking Oil Price Stabilisation Scheme (eCOSS) to the end user level, allowing every transaction involving subsidised packet cooking oil to be recorded digitally to curb leakages.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the phased implementation of the scheme is intended to ensure the system's stability and public acceptance before it is rolled out statewide.
'We need to pilot the eCOSS system at the consumer level first. Johor is expected to be the first state to implement it following test runs conducted through the Jualan Rahmah programme over the past three to four months,' he said.
Armizan explained that consumers would be required to download the eCOSS application and scan a QR code each time they purchase a packet cooking oil.
For now, the policy remains that only Malaysian citizens are allowed to buy subsidised cooking oil, he told a press conference after opening the southern zone 'Jelajah Karnival KPDN 2025' and the launch of the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM) at the Puteri Harbour Convention centre here today.
He said the move to extend the use of eCOSS is not aimed at reducing cooking oil subsidies, but rather as a transparent and targeted control mechanism.
'The subsidy is not reduced. But through this system, we have clear records - the number of boxes retailers received, who bought them, and how many were sold. However, we will not rush (into implementing it in Johor).
'Our focus is to ensure the system is truly stable and accepted by the people before it is expanded comprehensively,' he said.
According to him, the current system only records distribution from the repackers to retailers.

Malaysia and Vietnam are partnering to tap global halal economy, says Malaysian envoy
Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai. HANOI/PHNOM PENH (Bernama): Malaysia and Vietnam are poised to forge a smart partnership and leverage their existing economic complementarities to tap into the booming global halal footprint. Malaysian Ambassador to Vietnam Datuk Tan Yang Thai said that entering the halal market requires a deep understanding of its standards and the needs of its consumers, which could be addressed by both nations forming a practical strategy for future long-term growth. Vietnam is racing to capture a slice of the billion-dollar international halal market with its robust agricultural sector exports. "To accelerate Vietnam's entry, Malaysia proposes a practical and effective strategy. This strategy invites Vietnamese enterprises to leverage Malaysia's established halal infrastructure, including our certification facilities and readily available halal-certified ingredients. "This approach streamlines the process, allowing Vietnamese businesses to meet international standards more easily and get their products to market faster,' Tan told participants at the Accessing the Global Halal Market - Opportunities for Vietnamese Enterprises seminar in Hanoi on Wednesday. Vietnam's agricultural sector generated RM263 billion (US$62.4 billion) in export turnover last year while recording a trade surplus of RM81 billion (US$18.6 billion). The Vietnam Halal Centre estimates the country can produce RM144 billion (US$34 billion) worth of goods for the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) countries. "Vietnam is an agricultural surplus nation. "It possesses an abundance of halal potential raw materials including coffee, rice, marine products, aquaculture products, spices, nuts, vegetables, and fruit, which indicate high potential in producing end products,' Vietnam Halal Certification Agency (HALCERT) Director Ramlan Osman told Bernama from Hanoi. Tan encouraged Vietnamese enterprises to source Malaysian halal ingredients to simplify the production of halal-certified goods. The upcoming Malaysia International Halal Showcase 6 (MIHAS) in Kuala Lumpur from September 17 to 20, 2025 provides an ideal avenue to explore these possibilities. "By working together, we can unlock immense opportunities for growth and prosperity. "With Vietnam's entrepreneurial spirit and our shared commitment to collaboration, I am confident that Vietnam will become a significant and successful player in the global halal economy,' said Tan. - Bernam

TYT: Maal Hijrah a catalyst for progressive, dynamic Muslim community
Tun Musa presented the Maal Hijrah Icon Award (Male Category) to Amir Kahar. -Bernama photo KOTA KINABALU (June 27): The annual Maal Hijrah celebration should be made as a catalyst for change in the way of thinking, work culture and direction of the Muslim community to become progressive and dynamic. Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman explained that progressive means a community that is always moving forward in the fields of knowledge, economy, technology, thought and humanity, while dynamic means a community that is agile in facing the challenges of the times. Musa said it should be remembered that, in an effort to move forward, Muslims cannot abandon the Islamic values and principles inherited from the Prophet Muhammad, and they must plan and build a more perfect future and not imitate other civilizations. He also emphasized that the main challenge in developing a civilized community is the presence of radical, intolerant attitudes and a moral crisis among the younger generation. 'Religious institutions, education and the mass media have a great responsibility to jointly create collective awareness about the importance of developing a civilized community according to acceptable standards. 'This responsibility also needs to be fulfilled by each individual by becoming an agent of change and showing a fair, tolerant and respectful attitude towards fellow human beings in life,' he said. Musa said this when officiating the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor urged Muslims to make the spirit of hijrah the basis for strengthening unity and determination to face new and increasingly complex challenges in today's challenging world. Hajiji said this isnespecially with the threat of global instability and international geopolitical turmoil affecting several regions in the Middle East including Gaza, Iran, Lebanon and Syria, which majorly impacts international political stability. 'The ongoing war and the Israeli Zionist army's attacks on Islamic territories not only violate international law, but also blatantly violate human rights. This is not a small issue. It can change history and world geopolitics,' he said. Veteran politician Datuk Datu Amir Kahar Datu Mustapha who was active from 1986 to 2008 and once served as Deputy Chief Minister as well as State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister was selected as the male Maal Hijrah Figure. He received RM20,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate. Campaign Promoting Local Fruits Intensified To Help Farmers
JOHOR BAHRU, June 27 (Bernama) -- The government will intensify the 'Eat Local Fruits' campaign to reduce dependency on imported fruits and help boost the income of farmers nationwide. Agriculture and Food Safety Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said that all federal and state government agencies are encouraged to serve local fruits at every function to show their support. 'The government has been encouraging the people to eat local fruits. We request that local fruits be served at official government functions because we want to prioritise local produce and support our farmers,' he said when opening the 2025 Malaysian Pineapple Day here today. Mohamad said the campaign will be officially launched in Tawau, Sabah, on July 5 before being gradually expanded to other states, adding that local fruits, including pineapples, durians, jackfruit, and avocados, not only have strong domestic market potential but are also competitive in export markets. On June 20, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim instructed all government departments to cease using imported goods, especially food, at official events to promote the use of local products. Mohamad said the directive not only supports the country's economic growth but also helps expand market opportunities for local farmers and agricultural entrepreneurs. He also praised the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) for boosting the country's pineapple production to over RM1 billion. 'Alhamdulillah, our pineapple production is sufficient for domestic use, and any further increase will be geared towards export. LPNM, the private sector and individuals have answered the government's call to boost production,' he said. Mohamad also commended the Sarawak government for developing a new pineapple variety known as Sarawak Gold 1 (SG-1), which has produced high yields and shown strong disease resistance.
