KOTA KINABALU (June 27): The annual Maal Hijrah celebration should be made as a catalyst for change in the way of thinking, work culture and direction of the Muslim community to become progressive and dynamic.
Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman explained that progressive means a community that is always moving forward in the fields of knowledge, economy, technology, thought and humanity, while dynamic means a community that is agile in facing the challenges of the times.
Musa said it should be remembered that, in an effort to move forward, Muslims cannot abandon the Islamic values and principles inherited from the Prophet Muhammad, and they must plan and build a more perfect future and not imitate other civilizations.
He also emphasized that the main challenge in developing a civilized community is the presence of radical, intolerant attitudes and a moral crisis among the younger generation.

Therefore, he called for a comprehensive approach, including strengthening character education, spreading wise da'wah and monitoring social media, must be implemented so that it does not become a tool for spreading hate propaganda.
'Religious institutions, education and the mass media have a great responsibility to jointly create collective awareness about the importance of developing a civilized community according to acceptable standards.
'This responsibility also needs to be fulfilled by each individual by becoming an agent of change and showing a fair, tolerant and respectful attitude towards fellow human beings in life,' he said.
Musa said this when officiating the state-level Maal Hijrah celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre here today.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor urged Muslims to make the spirit of hijrah the basis for strengthening unity and determination to face new and increasingly complex challenges in today's challenging world.
Hajiji said this isnespecially with the threat of global instability and international geopolitical turmoil affecting several regions in the Middle East including Gaza, Iran, Lebanon and Syria, which majorly impacts international political stability.
'The ongoing war and the Israeli Zionist army's attacks on Islamic territories not only violate international law, but also blatantly violate human rights. This is not a small issue. It can change history and world geopolitics,' he said.
Veteran politician Datuk Datu Amir Kahar Datu Mustapha who was active from 1986 to 2008 and once served as Deputy Chief Minister as well as State Agriculture and Fisheries Minister was selected as the male Maal Hijrah Figure. He received RM20,000 in cash, a trophy and a certificate.
For the female Maal Hijrah Figure, the award went to Datuk Seri Norsuadah Basah, a former newsreader, announcer, and producer active from 1973 to 1978. She also received RM20,000, a trophy and a certificate.

Close ties among multiracial people invaluable asset

KUANTAN: The close ties between people of various races and religions in Malaysia are an invaluable asset, symbolising not only independence but also the nation's peace and prosperity, said Pahang Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail. He urged all parties to avoid division, which would only bring harm, and to ensure differences of opinion do not sever bonds of friendship or fuel hostility. 'This national spirit calls for us to continue safeguarding the racial harmony we have built over the years,' he said. 'We must firmly reject the perception game, slander and accusations deliberately spread to divide the people.' Wan Rosdy warned that such actions would erode trust, cause disunity, and undermine the stability of the state and country. He made these remarks in his winding-up speech at the Pahang State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Sri Pahang. Wan Rosdy also called for embracing independence with tolerance, mutual understanding, and determination to build a brighter future together. 'I call on all assembly members and the people of Pahang to liberate themselves not only from physical colonisation but also from the shackles of hatred, suspicion and division,' he said. Meanwhile, speaking to reporters after the sitting, Wan Rosdy described the Pahang supplementary budget approved today as one of the lowest since 2022. He said the RM141 million supplementary budget covered seven items, including salary increases for civil servants and pension payments for retirees. 'This is mandatory and cannot be avoided,' he said. 'The state government must make this payment.' He added that a supplementary budget is a normal process to address unforeseen matters. - Bernama

Police Step Up Security For Rafizi, Family After Son's Attack

SHAH ALAM, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- Police have tightened security measures for Pandan MP Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and his family following the attack on his son at a shopping mall in Putrajaya yesterday. Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar, however, declined to provide further details on the security arrangements to avoid compromising operations. 'There are measures in place, but I cannot disclose them as it would reveal what the security team is doing… police will carry out the necessary protection,' he told a press conference on the incident here today. Shazeli said six individuals had been called to give statements, including Rafizi, his wife and his son, as well as other related parties. When asked, he said it was too early to determine whether the attack was politically motivated until a more complete investigation is available. 'Alhamdulillah, our initial investigation through closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage has given us some leads and assistance. We are reviewing not only the footage from the shopping mall premises but also from outside the location. 'The public is advised not to make any speculation or assumptions that could cause unrest or provoke uncontrolled reactions,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 14(d) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017 (Act 792), Section 324 and Section 352 of the Penal Code. In a statement yesterday, Rafizi confirmed the victim was his son and that during the incident, two male suspects on a motorcycle, dressed in black and wearing helmets had tailed his wife's car. The former Economy Minister said one of them suddenly grabbed his son and stabbed him with a syringe.
