Ministry proposes broader access to essential items for Sara aid recipients

RANAU: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry will collaborate with the Finance Ministry to expand access to essential items for recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid. Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali said the ministry had proposed that recipients be allowed to use their Sara aid at mobile Jualan Rahmah Madani Programme (PJRM) locations, in addition to existing participating retailers. He said, at present, recipients of the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid could only purchase basic items at 4,152 participating supermarkets and retail outlets across the country, including 470 in Sabah. "This initiative enables Sara recipients, particularly in rural and interior areas, to use the aid credited to their MyKad to make purchases at Jualan Rahmah mobile locations," he told reporters after launching the Sabah Zone KPDN Carnival 2025 here tonight. Armizan said the additional RM300 million allocation for Jualan Rahmah would enable KPDN to increase its frequency nationwide, with a target of 20,000 series throughout this year. "For Sabah, KPDN is targeting 2,276 PJRM series throughout this year, and as of July 26, a total of 1,089 have already been implemented. "We will adopt several approaches to ensure the target is achieved by year-end," he said. He said the approaches included increasing the range of items offered and enhancing cooperation with strategic retail partners. "Through these improvements, the people will have more choices. The ministry can no longer act alone as it did in the past. For example, today's PJRM is carried out in collaboration with retail partners," he explained. Commenting on today's programme, this was the second year KPDN had implemented the programme, adding that six carnival tours would be held across the country this year. "The carnival in Ranau, held in conjunction with the Buy Malaysian Goods Campaign (KBBM), is the second in the series this year, and we expect around 60,000 visitors throughout the three-day event," he said. Armizan said that the main goal of the initiative was to bring government services, particularly those under KPDN, closer to the people, especially at the grassroots level. "The KPDN Carnival 2025 also serves as a catalyst in empowering KBBM through the theme 'Jom Beli Lokal' as part of ongoing efforts to support local products and strengthen the domestic economy. It is also a strategic move to boost domestic economic growth while helping local entrepreneurs and micro, small and medium enterprises expand their market reach. "At the same time, this initiative provides a platform to showcase the quality of local products, which can become the preferred choice and ultimately reduce reliance on imported goods," he said. –Bernama

Cash payout, cheaper petrol offer relief amid rising costs

PETALING JAYA: The announcement by the prime minister yesterday received widespread public approval, with many hailing it as timely relief amid ongoing economic pressures. Human Resources executive Afaf Radzuan, 35, said the cash handout for all adults is bound to strike a chord with the people. 'It's definitely a popular move. It's not just targeted at specific groups – everyone aged 18 and above will benefit. Families with many adults are especially lucky. Even though it's just a one-off, it can go a long way in helping with daily essentials.' Afaf added that the expansion of the Jualan Rahmah initiative would help Malaysians cope with rising prices of basic goods. 'The freeze on toll hikes also helps ease financial pressure, especially for those of us who travel long distances for work.' Aminurrashid Idris, 37, an executive based in Shah Alam, was thrilled about the extra public holiday. 'It's another long weekend for Malaysians. It gives us more time to be with our families.' He also welcomed the freeze on toll rates, noting it would benefit the many who commute daily between states for work. 'At least that is one cost which will not go up.' Part-time worker Nur Shahiera Hisham Mudin, 24, said the RM100 aid was meaningful, especially for young families. 'The announcement meant a lot to me. Between my husband, my younger sibling and I, we'll receive RM300. It may not seem much to others, but for us, it makes a real difference.' She said the money would go towards household essentials and items for her eldest child, who is nearly two. Radiographer Abdullah Zawawi Fikri Rozlan, 38, from Terengganu, said the cash handout may be small but would go a long way for struggling families. 'Thanks to PMX (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) for the RM100 assistance – it'll help many buy basic necessities. It's not enough to cover a whole month, of course, but it's a welcome help for those who truly need it.' More than 20 million Malaysians will get the RM100 cash handout in conjunction with Merdeka Day. All citizens aged 18 and above will receive the aid via their MyKad, under the SARA programme. The assistance can be used from Aug 31 to Dec 31 this year at over 4,000 participating stores, including major supermarket chains. Besides the cash handout, Anwar said the government would defer toll hikes scheduled this year across 10 highways. The allocation for the Jualan Rahmah Madani programme will also be doubled – from RM300 million to RM600 million. Anwar added that the government will introduce targeted subsidies for RON95 petrol, with the fuel set to be priced at RM1.99 per litre for Malaysians by the end of September. He also declared that Sept 15 (this year) will be a public holiday in celebration of Malaysia Day.

Madani retreat in Port Dickson promotes people-centric, compassionate leadership values

KUALA LUMPUR: Government Members of Parliament and members of the unity government gathered today for the "Ukhuwah Kepimpinan Kerajaan Madani" retreat in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan. In a statement, the Madani Government Backbenchers Club said the programme reflects the unity government's strong commitment to prioritising the interests of the people. Among the activities held were gotong-royong sessions at several locations, including Pusasda Mosque, Kampung Telok Pelandok, and Kampung Pachitan. A Jualan Rahmah sale was also organised, offering essential goods at affordable prices to help ease the burden of rising living costs. The programme was further enlivened with a kenduri rakyat and engagement sessions between leaders and residents, promoting an environment that encouraged open dialogue. The statement added that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's presence at the event further reinforced the government's people-centric approach, with Anwar taking the opportunity to engage directly with locals to better understand their concerns. "This is an example of the values of ihsan and social responsibility, which form the foundation of the Malaysia Madani philosophy. "Government MPs from the Madani government will continue to support the organisation of similar programmes in the future. "Only by being close to and understanding the heartbeat of the people can we build a nation that is more inclusive, just, and dignified, in line with the great aspirations of Malaysia Madani."

Making every ringgit count

Welcomed relief: Residents waiting their turn to buy groceries at the Jualan Rahmah programme at Greenlane Heights, Penang. — LIM BENG TATT/The Star GEORGE TOWN: Shoppers queued with baskets in hand, drawn by prices they had not seen in some time – RM3.90 for instant noodles, RM16.80 for 850gm packs of milk powder, RM11 for a whole chicken (almost 1.4kg) and much more. About 40 such essential items were up for grabs at the Jualan Rahmah programme at Greenlane Heights, organised by Seri Delima service centre and Greenlane Heights Village Community Management Council (MPKK). Residents from the neighbourhood were seen leaving with bags of groceries, bought at a discount. Vijayan Raj, 43, a security guard, said he regularly looks out for locations hosting Jualan Rahmah, where household essential items are sold cheaper than at regular retail shops. 'Jualan Rahmah has helped me cope with the spike in daily expenses. The prices here are much cheaper than in the shops,' he added. At the event yesterday he said that with his modest earnings and increasing household expenses, the initiative provides a much-needed cushion, especially when purchasing basic food items and necessities. Tan Teik Lun, 37, said he always finds ways to come to the Jualan Rahmah programme to buy essential items. 'Imagine buying 500gm of potatoes for only RM1, I will not be able to get this price at the morning market or even the grocery store,' said the father of two, who works at a car accessories shop. He also hopes the government will expand the programme to more communities, especially lower-income urban and semi-urban families. For Azimah Kamaruddin, 47, a civil servant, she often scrolls through social media to track the latest Jualan Rahmah programme in Penang. 'I always check Facebook and Instagram to find out where the next Jualan Rahmah will be. 'Whenever it's nearby, I make sure to go. The prices are much cheaper, it makes a difference,' she said, adding that she would end up spending much less for groceries, which would normally cost her over RM100. The mother of five said the initiative helped stretch her monthly salary, especially with the rising cost of basic necessities. 'With five growing children, every Ringgit counts and programmes like Jualan Rahmah help those like me lighten the load,' she said. Seri Delima assemblyman Connie Tan said the Jualan Rahmah programme yesterday was the 17th edition of the initiative for the people in her constituency. 'The initiative always receives a strong response from the local community,' she added. Tan said the strategic and convenient location makes it easier for nearby residents who prefer walking to the event. She said the programme was held two to three times a month at several locations in her constituency to help the community save on groceries. Describing the programme as a success, Tan said it will continue to be held from time to time to benefit more communities. She explained that the discounts offered during the sales are fully absorbed by the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living (KPDN) through government subsidies, enabling consumers to enjoy lower prices without burdening the traders. 'This is part of the government's commitment to ease the cost of living, especially for the B40 and M40 groups,' she added. Launched on Jan 11, 2023, the programme introduced by KPDN, aimed at offering daily necessities at discounts ranging from 10% to 30% below local market prices. It is part of the ministry's broader Payung Rahmah initiative to ease the financial burden on Malaysians. The initiative provides discounts of 10% to 30% below market prices at major supermarkets and hypermarkets, with priority given to locations with high low-income populations. The programme is nationwide, spanning all 222 parliamentary constituencies, and includes a wide range of items from food to personal care and school supplies.
