Prithvi Shaw's 'talent' still missed despite Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Ayush Mhatre's rise: 'Ended up spoiling his cricket'

Hindustan Times18 hours ago
Rohit Sharma's childhood coach Dinesh Lad asserted that Prithvi Shaw's downfall has been an unfortunate one. He said that since childhood, Shaw was a talented player but went down the wrong path, which spoiled his cricket. Shaw was once touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket, and a century on his international debut made then-head coach Ravi Shastri compare him to the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Brian Lara. The young batter once made headlines in the early years of his IPL career for his explosive stroke play, but in recent seasons, his fortunes have taken a steep dive, to the point where he went unsold in the most recent mega auction. Dinesh Lad suggested that the absence of Prithvi Shaw's talent still felt despite the emergence of Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatre. (AP and IPL Images)
Shaw has fallen quite low in the pecking order to make a comeback in the Indian team, while Shubman Gill, who played under his captaincy in the U-19 World Cup, recently became the Test skipper. His other U-19 teammates like Arshdeep Singh and Riyan Parag have also made a mark in the Indian team, with the former securing a place across all formats, while the all-rounder is steadily making his way into the white-ball setup.
Lad, who has witnessed Shaw's journey since childhood, expressed his disappointment that he chose the wrong path, which ultimately led to his downfall.
'I have seen Prithvi since his childhood, from the time he was 10 years old. He was a highly talented player. But as I have said, everyone's journey is individual, and I don't know what exactly happened with him. Still, Prithvi Shaw was a very talented cricketer. Unfortunately, he went down the wrong path and ended up spoiling his cricket," Lad said on a podcast with Gaurav Mangalani.
'Even now there should be a batter like Prithvi Shaw'
He further stated Indian cricket is in safe hands with emerging stars like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Ayush Mhatri making waves in IPL and age-group level cricket. However, he still suggested that the talent of someone like Shaw is still missing despite the rise of other young batters.
'Even now, I feel there should be a batter like him, the way he used to bat. Although right now we have some truly outstanding batters. For example, the way Vaibhav Suryavanshi is batting, and the way Ayush Mhatre is batting. These are future cricketers in the making. They are getting ready in line. Indian cricket is almost at the top,' he added.

Aldrin, Shaili struggles weigh on India's long jump

New Delhi: Murali Sreeshankar's 8.13m winning effort at Sunday's World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Bhubaneswar continues his steady comeback after a year out due to injury, but Indian long jump otherwise seemed to have tapered off. Murali Sreeshankar won with a 8.13m effort at Sunday's World Athletics Continental Tour meet in Bhubaneswar. (IIS) Sreeshankar's final jump that ensured victory, although still 14 cm shy of automatic qualification for next month's World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, was among the positives from India staging a meet of this stature. The men's javelin competition taking place around the same time at the Kalinga Stadium on a hot and humid evening saw a bunch of Indian throwers perform at a promising level, perhaps a reflection of the Neeraj Chopra effect. It didn't seem the case in long jump. While Sreeshankar was straining to win the event from 21-year-old Shahnavaz Khan – his 8.04m was the best till the 26-year-old bettered it in his final attempt – young national record holder Jeswin Aldrin had hobbled off without a jump, citing a left ankle niggle. At 23, Aldrin, whose national mark of 8.42m was set in 2023, should be touching his prime. However, the Reliance trainee has been grappling with a series of injuries instead. His best this season is 7.83m, at the federation championships in Kochi in April. It wasn't very promising in women's long jump either. Shaili Singh, the Anju Bobby George academy product who is trained by her husband Bobby George, only managed a modest 6.28m. The 21-year-old former junior world silver medallist has a best of 6.76m and touched 6.64m at the April federation championships, but she also said an ankle problem in her take-off leg hampered her. When Sreeshankar was ruled out of the 2024 Paris Olympics with injury, Aldrin was expected to provide a good impression of Indian long jump's progress. But he was eliminated after a best of 7.61m in qualification. The last time Aldrin hit 8 metres was in August 2023. He has also struggled with his left knee that he injured during the Budapest World Championships that year. In 16 competitions since, his best is 7.99m. James Hillier, athletics director at Reliance High Performance Centre, said: 'Jeswin is a tremendous talent but unfortunately he is struggling a little with his body. He'll be back stronger next season.' Last year, only one Indian, Aditya Kumar Singh of Uttar Pradesh, crossed 8m. Shaili's stagnation is surprising. Seen as the one likely to surpass Anju's national mark of 6.83m – it was set in 2004 – since her success as a junior, she finished fifth in the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games (6.48m). In Bhubaneswar, Shaili managed only two legal jumps, though her 6.28m was good to win from a depleted field. Ancy Sojan, the Hangzhou silver medallist, pulled out citing a muscle strain in her take-off leg. Since May 2023, Shaili has crossed 6.60m only twice and her chance of qualifying for Tokyo looks dim. The entry standard is 6.86m while Shaili's Road to Tokyo ranking is 61 where only the top 36 qualify. Shaili said: 'I am not too disappointed with the result considering that I was competing with a niggle in the take-off ankle. I'll end my season at the Inter State in Chennai (August 20-24) and take time off for rest and recovery.' Perhaps Aldrin and Shaili will benefit from proper recovery and rehabilitation. Shahnavaz though holds some promise. Sreeshankar's younger training partner at SAI Thiruvananthapuram had a second best effort of 7.88m. 'He is a great kid and an amazing talent to watch out for,' Sreeshankar said. 'Even if I had lost to Shahnavaz, I would have been alright because he is a very good talent.' Bihar's 24-year-old Sunny Kumar is also seen as having potential. He disappointed on Sunday – he was 10th with a best of 7.25m – although Kumar jumped a personal best of 7.90m at the Indian Open in Bengaluru in June. Sreeshankar, Shahnavaz and Kumar are all expected to take part in the Chennai Inter State meet.

Steelers' Cam Heyward is open to sitting out regular-season games in search of a raise

LATROBE, Pa. (AP) — Cam Heyward wants a raise. And the longtime Pittsburgh Steelers defensive tackle is open to sitting out regular-season games to get one. HT Image Heyward told reporters Monday that he approached the club about a reworked deal in February after being selected to the All-Pro team for the fourth time in his 14-year career. There has been no movement on that front nearly three weeks into training camp. The 36-year-old Heyward, a seven-time Pro Bowler, had been 'holding in" during camp, participating in some individual workouts but skipping some fully-padded 11-on-11 snaps. He stood on the sideline in street clothes on Monday as the Steelers began the final workouts of their annual three-week visit to Saint Vincent College. Heyward said the team asked him to take a pay cut last summer. They ironed out a reworked deal instead that runs through 2026. Heyward responded by bouncing back from an injury-marred 2023 to finish with eight sacks, 71 tackles and 11 passes defensed as the Steelers went 10-7 and reached the playoffs for the fourth time in five years. Neither Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin nor defensive coordinator Teryl Austin are bothered by Heyward's position or his lack of participation at this time of year. 'Cam's been doing this a long time,' Tomlin said. 'I don't work Cam a lot in these scenarios (during camp).' The Steelers do have a little bit of wiggle room under the salary cap, but have also doled out hefty contracts to star outside linebacker TJ Watt, wide receiver DK Metcalf and recently acquired defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Heyward, the 2023 Walter Payton Man of the Year, has long stated he wants to be a 'one helmet guy,' meaning he would prefer to spend his entire career in Pittsburgh. While that's hardly in danger at this point, his aggressive stance has thrown a wrinkle into a relatively quiet camp. ___ AP NFL:
