India T20 Captain Suryakumar Yadav Heads To London For Sports Hernia Treatment, To Miss Action Till August
India's T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav has flown to London to undergo treatment for a sports hernia, with recovery and fitness being his top priorities during a break in India's limited-overs schedule. The dynamic batter is expected to be sidelined for a few weeks, with a potential return to the field projected around August 2025.
Timely Treatment Amid Limited-Overs Break
While Shubman Gill leads India's red-ball squad in the five-match Test series against England, Suryakumar is using the gap in India's T20 fixtures to address his long-standing injury. The procedure is expected to begin next week in London, and according to reports, Suryakumar will require close to two months of rehabilitation before he is fully fit again.
Although the BCCI has not officially confirmed the surgery, sources close to the team have suggested the decision was carefully timed to ensure the 34-year-old is ready for a packed white-ball schedule ahead.
Calendar Advantage: No T20s Until August
India's next T20I commitment comes in August, when the team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series. This will be followed by home series against South Africa and the West Indies, before embarking on a crucial tour to Australia all forming part of India's preparation for the 2026 ICC T20 World Cup.
Suryakumar's decision to undergo surgery now is seen as a strategic move, ensuring he is in peak condition for the busy period ahead.
IPL 2025: Stellar Show for Mumbai Indians
In the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), Suryakumar was a vital cog for the Mumbai Indians. He amassed 717 runs in 16 matches, boasting an exceptional average of 65.18 and a blistering strike rate of 167.9. Remarkably, he scored 25+ runs in all 16 innings, setting a new milestone for most consecutive 25+ scores in T20 cricket.
His consistency played a major role in guiding Mumbai Indians to the playoffs, although their journey ended in Qualifier 2 following a defeat to the Punjab Kings.
Mumbai T20 League: Modest Outing Post-IPL
Following the IPL, Suryakumar represented the Triumph Knights MNE in the Mumbai T20 League. However, the team struggled, managing just one win in five matches and failing to qualify for the playoffs. Suryakumar contributed 122 runs in five games, but his efforts weren't enough to change the team's fortunes.
Focus Now on Recovery and T20 World Cup Prep
With a break in competitive cricket and a favorable schedule, Suryakumar's focus is now on recovery and regaining full fitness. The Indian team management is expected to closely monitor his rehab progress, given his pivotal role in the T20 setup. As India eyes a strong build-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, a fully-fit and in-form Suryakumar Yadav will be essential to their campaign.

Gill is a mix of Rohit, Virat as captain: Buttler
Mumbai: India's new Test captain Shubman Gill is a mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he will be 'very much his own man' in the middle when he leads the national side in the eagerly-awaited five-Test series against England starting on Friday, feels Jos Buttler. Buttler, the former England limited-overs captain who played under Gill in this year's IPL, said the 25-year-old will need to find a balance between his captaincy role and his own batting. 'He's a really impressive player ,' Buttler said on his podcast 'For The Love of Cricket' alongside former England pacer Stuart Broad. 'He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but (it's) interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit. 'Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit was a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight,' he added. Buttler expects Gill to 'be a bit in the middle'. 'He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man.' Buttler said the job of captaining India in Test cricket is like being a 'third or fourth-most influential people' in the country 'He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles,' he said. 'I don't think we can quite understand the level of interest and the stardom that these guys have. You see it around the IPL, you're aware of it, but actually living that yourself... I think they say the Indian Test captain is like the third or fourth-most influential person in India, behind the Prime Minister, so you really are put up on that pedestal. Buttler said 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 38-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans, which was the second-fastest IPL ton and fastest for any Indian in T20 cricket, was both 'inspiring and deflating'. 'This guy is (about) 20 years younger than me, and he is just smashing us all around the park. Absolutely (sent) shockwaves throughout the cricket world,' he said. '...the first ball, he gave himself a bit of room and smacked it over wide long on for a six... that fearlessness. I love these guys out there; there are so many brilliant players. They almost want to make a statement as in 'look at me'.'

"We Do Not Hide Behind A Bat": Jasprit Bumrah's Namedrops Virat Kohli In Explosive Test vs T20 Remark
Despite ending his 18-year wait for an Indian Premier League (IPL) title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in IPL 2025, Virat Kohli had stated after the match that even that achievement ranked five levels below Test cricket to him. Kohli has been a championer of Test cricket throughout his career, describing it as the pinnacle of the sport. Reflecting on Kohli's statement, India's pace spearhead has also echoed that Test cricket is the pinnacle for him. However, Bumrah also sympathised with players - particularly bowlers - who sacrificed their Test career to play T20 leagues. In a discussion with Kohli's mentor at RCB and former India wicket-keeper batter Dinesh Karthik, Bumrah acknowledged the changing mentality among up and coming fast bowlers who see a better future playing T20 cricket and not Tests. "It's very subjective to every individual. I understand the thought process. They have one career. We do not hide behind a bat. You have to put a lot of strain on your body. You have to look after your family and earn money," Bumrah said in the interaction, which took place on Sky Sports. "If sometimes their bodies won't allow them to play the longest format and they still want to contribute towards the game, sometimes those are smarter approaches," Bumrah stated. Bumrah, the No. 1-ranked ICC Test bowler at the moment, however, did claim that Test cricket is still the ultimate platform and format for him. "Everybody is different. It comes from a time when Test cricket was the pinnacle. This was the format. I grew up watching. I always judge myself through this format. In the current generation, things are different. T20 cricket is there. Leagues are there. Thought processes have changed. Mindsets change. You cannot judge players or fast bowlers. Yes this is the purest format, but everybody is different," Bumrah said. Bumrah advised players to follow the words said by Kohli and pay respect to the longest format of the game. "I would encourage people to play this format to earn respect. Like Virat said in his interview, you will get respect through this format. You will get respect all over the world," Bumrah stated. Jasprit Bumrah has enjoyed a superb career in both the longest and shortest format of the game, boasting the distinction of having been ranked No. 1 in Tests but also being named the 'Player of the Tournament' for a T20 World Cup.

Shubman Gill Gets Massive Threat Ahead Of Test Series: "England Will Target Him, Knock Him Over"
Shubman Gill will be expected to excel not just as captain in the India vs England Test series, starting on June 20, but as a batter too. While Gill's performnace at home has been great, the same cannot be said about his overseas performance. While his overseas average is just 27.53 (716 runs in 15 games, 1 centry), at home it is 42.03 (1177 in 17 matches, 4 centuries). In the midst of this, Gill will be expected to lead India to its first series win in England since 2007. Former England batter Nick Knight said that Ben Stokes ' men will target Shubman Gill in particular. "I think that's going to be pretty crucial because every side, and England will do it. You can bet your bottom dollar, England will do it. No side is more vulnerable than when its captain is feeling a little under pressure and vulnerable. That has a huge impact on the whole dressing room, right? So England will target Shubman Gill. England will try and knock him over. England will try and make him feel uncomfortable," Knight told TOI. "Because they'll feel that that might have a knock-on effect with those around him. So it's a huge series for Shugman Gill. Who, by the way, I am a huge fan of. And have been for a long, long time. I remember seeing Shubman at 18, 19 in an Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand. And I went, wow, this boy can play." Knight also pointd out at a technical flaw in Gill's batting that the hosts will try to exploit. "Well, when I've been out in India (for IPL commentary), I always highlight the same thing, really. Sometimes with Shubman, more so when you're sort of a little lacking in confidence and striving for things a little bit for your form, sometimes that front leg just pushes across a little bit too much. And, therefore, the rotation of the body and accessing the ball and playing around that front pad. But of late, I haven't seen that quite so much, if I'm brutally honest," Nick Knight told news agency PTI. "...But it becomes more important when you've got a left-armer coming over the wicket and swinging it back into the pads. That's something that he will probably be always aware of. That line outside off stump, again, will be the challenge for all these top-order players, particularly in England."
