Gill is a mix of Rohit, Virat as captain: Buttler
Mumbai: India's new Test captain Shubman Gill is a mix of his predecessors Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli but he will be 'very much his own man' in the middle when he leads the national side in the eagerly-awaited five-Test series against England starting on Friday, feels Jos Buttler.
Buttler, the former England limited-overs captain who played under Gill in this year's IPL, said the 25-year-old will need to find a balance between his captaincy role and his own batting.
'He's a really impressive player ,' Buttler said on his podcast 'For The Love of Cricket' alongside former England pacer Stuart Broad.
'He's pretty calm and measured when he speaks, but (it's) interesting, I feel like on the field he's got a bit of fight about him; a bit of intensity, quite passionate. I think he'll be a mix of Kohli and Rohit.
'Kohli (was) that sort of real aggressive (character), really transformed the Indian team, in your face, up for the contest. Rohit was a bit on the other side, a bit more laid back, very cool, calm, collected customer, but with that sort of fight,' he added.
Buttler expects Gill to 'be a bit in the middle'.
'He's obviously learned from those two guys… but he'll be very much his own man.'
Buttler said the job of captaining India in Test cricket is like being a 'third or fourth-most influential people' in the country
'He talked about compartmentalising batting and captaining; so when he's batting he just wants to be a batter, and then he will try and work on his captaincy and try and separate the two roles,' he said.
'I don't think we can quite understand the level of interest and the stardom that these guys have. You see it around the IPL, you're aware of it, but actually living that yourself... I think they say the Indian Test captain is like the third or fourth-most influential person in India, behind the Prime Minister, so you really are put up on that pedestal.
Buttler said 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi's 38-ball 101 for Rajasthan Royals against Gujarat Titans, which was the second-fastest IPL ton and fastest for any Indian in T20 cricket, was both 'inspiring and deflating'.
'This guy is (about) 20 years younger than me, and he is just smashing us all around the park. Absolutely (sent) shockwaves throughout the cricket world,' he said.
'...the first ball, he gave himself a bit of room and smacked it over wide long on for a six... that fearlessness. I love these guys out there; there are so many brilliant players. They almost want to make a statement as in 'look at me'.'

Indian Archery League set for October launch
The much-anticipated franchise-based Indian Archery League is finally set to take off in October at the Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi with six city-based teams, Archery Association of India treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril confirmed on Tuesday. Initially conceptualised in 2020, the league had to be shelved due to lack of sponsors. However, the AAI has now secured sponsors and is currently in discussions with broadcasters, including Sony Sports and JioHotstar, to roll out the league this year. This will be the world's first franchise league in archery and the federation is hopeful of a strong response that will go a long way in developing Indian archers, who are still chasing their maiden Olympic medal. 'Everything will be finalised by the end of this month, and we are hopeful of launching the league in the October window. We are calling it Indian Archery League but the name is not yet finalised,' Jose told PTI. The remaining franchises will be decided soon. Each franchise will adopt a city, depending on ownership and league plans. It will be mandatory for each team to include two overseas archers, Joris said. BCCI suffer massive setback as court dismisses petition against Kochi Tuskers in ₹538 cr arbitral awards case
The BCCI were dealt a massive setback on Tuesday, as the Bombay High Court upheld arbitral awards exceeding ₹538 crore in favour of the owners of now-defunct IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers. A single judge (Justice R.I. Chagla) presided on the BCCI vs Kochi Cricket Private Limited and others case, and dismissed the Indian cricket body's challenge to the arbitral awards. The judge ruled that the court could not act as an appellate authority over the arbitrator's findings. The court observed, 'The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited. BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award.' The Kochi Tuskers franchise was first given to a consortium led by Rendezvous Sports World (RSW), and then it was later operated by Kochi Cricket Private Limited (KCPL). The team participated in only one season (IPL 2011), then the BCCI terminated the franchise in September 2011, due to a breach of franchise agreement, citing failure to furnish a 10 percent bank guarantee. It was also reported that there was also many internal disputes between owners. Meanwhile, the KCPL stated that the delay was due to unresolved problems, which consisted of stadium unavailability, regulatory approvals on shareholding and also a reduction in the number of IPL games. Amid the delay, the BCCI and KCPL were in contact for many months, with the Indian cricket body also accepting various payments. But then suddenlu, the BCCI terminated the franchise, and also encashed a prior guarantee issued by RSW Both KCPL and RSW initiated arbitration proceedings in 2012, and the tribunal ruled in their favour in 2015. It awarded ₹384 crore to KCPL for loss of profits and RS 153 crore to RSW for wrongful encashment of the bank guarantee, and also alongwith interest and legal costs. The BCCI contested the tribunal's decision, and stated that it exceeded its jurisdiction and misapplied legal principles. Also, according to the BCCI, KCPL's failure to give the bank guarantee was a fundamental breach, justifying termination. It also contested the award of both loss of profist and wasted expenditure, citing that the damages were excessive and in breach of the contract. RSW's arbitration claim was also challenged under the Indian Partnership Act. The KCPL and RSW argued that BCCI had waived the guarantee deadline effectively, which made the termination unjustified. The court found no grounds to interfere with the arbitral findings, and stated, 'The arbitrator's conclusion that the BCCI's termination of the Kochi franchise was a repudiatory breach of contract would call for no interference under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act.' The court also added, 'Thus, based on these material facts and documents on record, the finding of the learned Arbitrator that BCCI waived the requirement under Clause 8.4 of the KCPL-FA for furnishment of bank guarantee for 2012 season on or before 22nd March, 2011 cannot be faulted.'

India's speed sensation Umesh Yadav is confident that he will make a return to the national side ahead of the five match Test series against England. My effort is to get fit and come back in the team" Umesh Yadav told Sports opened up about the hardships he faced to come at this stage, feeling grateful he shared how his father is a coal miner and playing for India was never even in his dreams."When I started playing cricket, I never thought that I will play this, I will play that, I would play for India. I am a natural fast bowler. I have been bowling fast since childhood. I never went to any academy or nets. That is why I never thought that I would play for India. I kept on playing. Someone told me to play this, someone told me to play that. While playing, the son of a coal miner is sitting here playing for India. I think some things that are meant to happen, happen. I always say that fast bowlers are natural; you cannot make them fast bowlers" added UmeshYadav made his Test debut in 2011 and has played 57 tests taking 170 wickets. He has been a force to reckon with under Virat Kohli specially at Indian grounds. Apart from the red ball format, he has also played 75 ODIs and nine T20Is. He was part of India's 2015 World Cup team that went to play till Semi-final.
