Indian Archery League set for October launch
The much-anticipated franchise-based Indian Archery League is finally set to take off in October at the Yamuna Sports Complex in New Delhi with six city-based teams, Archery Association of India treasurer Joris Paulose Ummacheril confirmed on Tuesday.
Initially conceptualised in 2020, the league had to be shelved due to lack of sponsors.
However, the AAI has now secured sponsors and is currently in discussions with broadcasters, including Sony Sports and JioHotstar, to roll out the league this year.
This will be the world's first franchise league in archery and the federation is hopeful of a strong response that will go a long way in developing Indian archers, who are still chasing their maiden Olympic medal.
'Everything will be finalised by the end of this month, and we are hopeful of launching the league in the October window. We are calling it Indian Archery League but the name is not yet finalised,' Jose told PTI.

Three teams -- from Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru -- have already been finalised. The remaining franchises will be decided soon. Each franchise will adopt a city, depending on ownership and league plans.
Each team will consist of eight archers -- four in recurve and four in compound -- with two men and two women in each category.
It will be mandatory for each team to include two overseas archers, Joris said.
'We've seen how the IPL has revolutionised Indian cricket, and we are confident this league will do something similar for archery,' another AAI official said.

Ahead of the first Test, many opined that Karun Nair could be India's new no.5, with Pant shifting to sixth spot; however, the wicketkeeper-batter has quashed those speculations. What remains unresolved, however, is the puzzle around the No. 3 spot. Karun Nair, who forced his way back into national reckoning with a glut of runs in domestic cricket and then topped it off with a stunning double hundred in the tour match against England Lions, is a frontrunner. His return to the Indian setup has been among the most talked-about comebacks in recent times, and he seems primed to slot in at one of the top three positions. However, India's decision could hinge on whether they hand a debut to left-hander Sai Sudharsan, who earned his maiden Test call-up on the back of consistent performances across formats. If Sudharsan is picked in the XI, it may force India to rethink their middle-order configuration. Given Karun Nair's traditional role as a top or middle-order anchor, it is unlikely the team management would push him down to no. 6, which would be an unfamiliar territory. Haliburton is likely going to be a game-time decision for Game 6, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle says
INDIANOLIS — The Indiana Pacers are preparing for the possibility of not having Tyrese Haliburton available to play in Game 6 of the NBA Finals, coach Rick Carlisle said in a radio interview on Wednesday morning. Haliburton has been dealing with a lower right leg injury throughout the series and it worsened during Monday's Game 5 loss in Indianapolis. Haliburton played through it for most of his 34 minutes, but failed to make a field goal in the game and Indiana lost to Oklahoma City 120-109 — falling behind 3-2 in the title series. Now facing a win-or-else scenario, there is a chance Haliburton does not play in Game 6 on Thursday. "He is going to be carefully evaluated over the next 36 hours and will likely be listed as questionable on the injury report and probably will be a game-time decision for Game 6," Carlisle said on Indianapolis radio station 107.5 The Fan. Haliburton, part of the team that won Olympic gold in Paris for USA Basketball last year, was undergoing evaluation Tuesday to determine the extent of the injury. Part of that evaluation was an MRI exam, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because neither Haliburton nor the team revealed that publicly. ESPN first reported that an MRI was scheduled. After Game 5, Carlisle did not specifically say that the MRI would be part of the team's next moves in figuring out how best to proceed with Haliburton, though made clear that the Eastern Conference champions would be taking a close look at the injury. Given that it is evidently a muscular injury, an MRI is part of the typical evaluation process. 'We have to prepare for two scenarios — one where he plays and one where he does not,' Carlisle said in the radio interview. If Haliburton cannot play, it would seem likely that the Pacers would promote guard TJ McConnell to a starting role. McConnell has been brilliant throughout these playoffs and sparked a rally where Indiana closed an 18-point deficit to a two-point difference in the second half of Game 5, before Oklahoma City pulled away again and for good. 'Depending on the situation tomorrow, we may need him for significantly more minutes,' Carlisle said of McConnell. Haliburton left Game 5 late in the first quarter and returned to the bench area with a wrap on his lower leg. He not only returned to the game, he played 34 minutes — but did so while missing all six of his shots and with him barely looking to shoot at all in the second half. He finished the game with seven rebounds and six assists, but only four points. It was the first time in Haliburton's career that he logged at least 34 minutes and failed to make a single field goal. The Pacers, Carlisle said, discussed not letting Haliburton play in the second half. Haliburton vetoed those plans and played 17 minutes in the second half, leading the Pacers in rebounds and assists after intermission. 'I mean, it's the NBA Finals. It's the finals, man,' Haliburton said after Game 5. 'I've worked my whole life to be here and I want to be out there to compete. Help my teammates any way I can. I was not great tonight by any means, but it's not really a thought of mine to not play here. If I can walk, then I want to play. They understand that. And it is what it is. India and England share a long history, with the Men In Blues' first tour of England coming all the way back in the year 1932, which went the way of England as the hosts clinched the only game of the tour. India returned in the year 1936 to claim their first draw on English soil, but fell to a 2-0 defeat in the three-match series between the two nations. It was a decade before Indian faced the Englishmen on enemy territory again, but this time in 1946, the Indian side managed two draws in a three-game series that ended in favour of England, who had registered a win. In 1952, the Englishmen posted yet another series win in a four-match series as the hosts managed three wins and a draw. Things got worse for the tourists in 1959 as the English unit blanked Indian in a 5-0 drubbing, before emulating the feat in a three-game series in 1967. 1971 was a historic year for Indian cricket as the visitors picked up their first Test win on English solid and eventually the series as Team India finished the three-match-series with a win, two draws and absolutely no defeats. The English restored their supremacy in 1974 with a 3-0 series win, before edging out their rivals in a four-match series in 1979. England picked up a slender win in the following 1990 three-match series with two games ending in a draw and the hosts triumphing in the other, before replicating the same six years later when India came visiting. The 2002 season of India's tour to England finished in a stalemate as both sides won a game each while sharing the spoils on two occasions in a four-match series. But, India took the 2007 series all to themselves as they picked up a win and pulled off a couple of draws to close out the three-game tour as winners. England enjoyed a whitewash of Indian in the 2011 series, winning all four Tests in the tour. The Three Lions also clinched the five-match 2014 series 3-1 and did one better with a 4-1 series win in 2018. The most recent Indian Test tour of England, in the year 2021, remains fresh in the memory of fans as India fought to split the series 2-2, with the other game finishing in a draw.
