Kevin Durant trade expected soon, NBA Conference Finals contender likely to pursue him

Yahoo19 hours ago

There's no debate that Kevin Durant is a future first-ballot Hall of Famer. What is up for debate is what team the Phoenix Suns superstar will be playing for when the 2025-26 NBA season tips off.
The Suns are working hard to trade the 15-time All-Star, and several teams are expected to have interest. Possibly even one of the teams from the NBA's Conference Finals.

Specifically, ESPN's NBA insider Brian Windhorst suggests the New York Knicks could be among the teams that pursue a Durant trade in the next few weeks.
'I do believe Kevin Durant will be traded in the coming weeks. I expect them to look into the Durant trade market pretty soon. There are going to be a handful of teams that have interest in Durant. They key is this, he has one year left on his contract. Is he going to want to sign an extension and is he going to want to be part of the process in a trade and are the Suns going to let him be?'
ESPN's Brian Windhorst on Kevin Durant trade
The 36-year-old Durant will surely want to sign with a contending team. Moreso, he'll want to land in a place that could become his final destination in the NBA, knowing contract discussions will be taking place in the near future.
Thus, a team like the Knicks would make a lot of sense. Not only are they in a massive market that can take advantage of Durant's superstardom, they'll be a playoff contender for multiple years. Yet, the Knicks are far from the only team that makes sense for Durant this summer.
Other teams that have been loosely linked to a Durant trade include the Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs. The Timberwolves have their built-in Anthony Edwards connection with Durant after the two won a gold medal in the Tokyo Olympics, yet, the idea of playing with Victor Wembanyama has to be intriguing too.

Ultimately, as Windhorst mentioned, it could come down to whether Durant has any say on where he'll be traded to next.

Francis Ngannou accompanies Kamaru Usman in surprise UFC Atlanta weigh-ins appearance

Francis Ngannou accompanies Kamaru Usman in surprise UFC Atlanta weigh-ins appearance Show Caption Hide Caption UFC on ESPN 69: Kamaru Usman vs. Joaquin Buckley ceremonial weigh-in faceoff Kamaru Usman and Joaquin Buckley had their final UFC on ESPN 69 faceoff at ceremonial weigh-ins, with a surprise appearance from Francis Ngannou. Who thought Francis Ngannou would ever be seen again on a UFC stage? It happened Friday when Ngannou, the former UFC heavyweight champion, accompanied former welterweight champ Kamaru Usman to the scale during the UFC on ESPN 69 ceremonial weigh-ins at State Farm Arena in Atlanta. Usman meets Joaquin Buckley in Saturday night's main event (ESPN, ESPN+). Ngannou's appearance came as a surprise considering how much UFC CEO Dana White has publicly bad-mouthed Ngannou ever since he chose not to re-sign with the UFC in January 2023, at times making things personal. As has increasingly been the case, White did not oversee Friday's UFC on ESPN 69 ceremonial weigh-in faceoffs. A person with knowledge of the situation told MMA Junkie that Ngannou is not a licensed cornerman for his good friend, Usman. Ngannou, who wore officially licensed UFC Venum gear, joined Usman on stage only as a show of support. Ngannou, 38, hasn't competed since last October, when he defeated Renan Ferreira by knockout in his PFL debut. There's no word when he could fight again. Last month, Ngannou was involved in a fatal motorcyle accident in his native Cameroon, which killed a young woman. Ngannou struck the young woman with his motorcycle while she was walking.

Russell Westbrook won't exercise $3.5 million option for next season, AP source says

Russell Westbrook will not be exercising his $3.5 million player option with the Denver Nuggets for next season and will instead become a free agent, a person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press on Friday. The decision doesn't necessarily mean that Westbrook won't be back with the Nuggets, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither side revealed the decision publicly. NBA reporter Marc Stein first reported Westbrook's decision, which was later confirmed by ESPN and The Denver Post, among others. Westbrook averaged 13.3 points, 4.9 rebounds and 6.1 assists for the Nuggets this season — his 17th in the NBA — and helped Denver reach the second round of the playoffs, falling in seven games to eventual Western Conference champion Oklahoma City. He underwent surgery after the season to repair multiple ligament tears in his right hand, an issue he played through during the season. At that time, Westbrook posted in his newsletter than he was 'grateful for everyone's support all year and I can't wait to be back out there at 100% soon. The comeback is already in motion.' That would indicate that he is planning to play somewhere next season. Westbrook is a nine-time All-Star, nine-time All-NBA selection and won the MVP award after the 2016-17 season. He's also part of the NBA's 75th anniversary team and has averaged 21.2 points and eight assists per game over his career. ___

Calls to Boycott 2026 World Cup Surge After Trump-FIFA Scandal and New Travel Ban

Calls to Boycott 2026 World Cup Surge After Trump-FIFA Scandal and New Travel Ban originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Trump's newly announced travel ban has increased further the calls for a Boycott of the 2026 World Cup. Advertisement Though the ban comes with an exemption that could apply to players, staff or associated family members participating in the tournament, Democrats are calling the move "reckless" and "discriminatory" with fears that it will lead to chaos and confusion with regards to the US's hosting of events including the World Cup, the Club World Cup and the Olympics. The exemption states that the following are not subject to the ban" "Any athlete or member of an athletic team, including coaches, persons performing a necessary supporting role, and immediate relatives, traveling for the World Cup, Olympics, or any other major sporting event as determined by the secretary of state" Infantino Cosying Up To Trump Last month FIFA President Gianni Infantino skipped his own congress to meet with Donald Trump in Qatar and Saudi Arabia - sparking a walkout by European officials. That move triggered the previously unthinkable notion of a boycott. Critics say the relationship between Trump and Infantino highlights corruption and deep ties to authoritarian regimes, with UEFA accusing Infantino of abusing power for political gain. Advertisement Qatar hosted the last World Cup and even more controversially, Saudi Arabia won the bid to host the 2034 World Cup unopposed. Minky Worden, the director of global initiatives at Human Rights Watch said that Infantino's trip was indicative of the lack of "meaningful accountability" at the highest level of soccer and called on him "to detail precisely what it achieved for football and human rights". Fans Fear The Worst The controversy comes on top of fears that Trump's hardline immigration policies will deter fans from traveling to the US after recent detention horror stories from tourists. Others have mocked Infantino and Trump for sharing three key traits - a love of money; a thirst for power; and rampant narcissism. Advertisement There's no word yet on whether Qatar is also giving Infantino a $400 million plane, but would it surprise anyone if they were? UEFA meanwhile accused Infantino of pursuing "private political interests" ahead of his responsibility to football. Angry statements have little to no affect on the way that Infantino and/or Trump behave. That's why increasingly people are calling for more radical action and to hit Trump and Infantino where it hurts: their wallet. That includes a partial boycott of the 2026 World Cup, with countries refusing to play games in the US, and insisting all matches switch to co-hosts Canada and Mexico.
