Court grants delay on dismantling homeless encampment in Montreal's east end
The removal of the tents will not happen before July 10, when lawyers from the Clinique juridique itinérante (CJI), the city, and the provincial transport ministry will be back in Superior Court.
The CJI, which represents the people living in the encampment, had argued that an eviction would cause serious harm and shouldn't be done when shelters are overcrowded. The tents are located along Notre-Dame between Pie-IX Boulevard and St-Clément Street in the city's Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough.
Meanwhile, lawyers for the City of Montreal and the Ministry of Transport argued in the legal proceedings that the tents raise safety concerns, including the frequent interventions from the police and fire services.
The court initially granted an injunction on the eviction on June 18 after the CJI filed an emergency injunction request on June 10.
