Michigan Army National Guard members say goodbye to loved ones ahead of deployment

Yahoo26-04-2025

GRAND LEDGE Mich. (WLNS) – A unit with the Michigan Army National Guard is headed overseas to support the U.S. European Command.
A deployment ceremony was held at the Grand Ledge Armory Thursday, where families said their goodbyes. This is Captain Timothy Mapley's first deployment, and he shared why these ceremonies are so important.
'This is that last opportunity to give the hugs and kisses that you wish you could have done more of.' Captain Mapley continued.
He is one of around 100 soldiers headed to the country of Kosovo in Europe for up to a year to support Project Joint Guardian. Captain Mapley said he is excited to put his intense training to work, but goodbyes are tough.
It is Lieutenant Colonel Brian Snook's third deployment and third time saying goodbye to his family. He said that support from loved ones is the true bedrock for service members.
'That is what is going to keep you able to serve this great country,' said Lieutenant Colonel Snook.
His wife and kids will miss him a lot, but the Lieutenant Colonel said that for this deployment, technology will help them get by.
'Whether it's over the phone for a few minutes, or just getting to see my beautiful family's face, that's what's going to keep me going through the entire move,' Lieutenant Colonel Snook said.
At the ceremony, around 25 of the 100 soldiers left in helicopters for Texas. From there, they will head to Kosovo, and the rest of the Army National Guard members will follow shortly. They're in the country to help keep a safe and secure environment in the region.

Antisemitism Protection Act proposed in Michigan legislature

LANSING, (Mich.) WLNS — As the investigation continues into a on a demonstration for Israeli hostages in Gaza, Michigan lawmakers are speaking out against antisemitism in the state. This includes the introduction of new legislation aimed at protecting people from antisemitism. Today, three Democratic lawmakers introduced the Michigan Antisemitism Protection Act (MAPA), which amends the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act by adding the official definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance. State Rep. Noah Arbit, from West Bloomfield, said the Act would help identify antisemitism. 'If adopted, the standard would assist relevant state authorities, agencies, and institutions to better identify and elevate potential cases of illegal discrimination against Jews in Michigan,' said Arbit. However, Arbit, who is Jewish himself, says the problem of anti Semitism can't be solved by a simple bill. 'When it comes to this MAPA bill, or even the new hate crime laws, one thing is certain: they are not a cure-all. Anti-Jewish racism, like all racism, is a societal ill and a public health problem that we need to tackle as such,' said Arbit. Lawmakers say they see complacency among the general public and a failure from public figures to fight hate. They say, if left unchecked, this, along with what they call 'youth radicalization,' will continue to lead to violent acts. Some, like State Rep. Samantha Steckloff, are even worried for their safety. 'Every single one of us in the Jewish caucus has received a call from the FBI with credible threats to our life,' said Steckloff. Arbit said both parties have failed to properly address hate against Jews. 'I don't think either party gets a passing grade here when it comes to fighting antisemitism. I would like to see both parties put a veritable, good-faith effort to improving what they are doing in terms of standing up for the Jewish communities across America,' said Arbit. State Representatives announce articles of impeachment against Michigan Sec. of State Jocelyn Benson

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS)– Today, State Rep. James DeSana (R-Caleton) held a news conference announcing articles of impeachment against Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson. DeSana accuses Benson of engaging in corrupt conduct, violating constitutional rights, and repeatedly abusing power. Sec. Benson responded to the articles of impeachment. calling it a clown show. I believe in oversight and I believe in transparency. This isn't is Republican lawmakers abusing their authority to access sensitive election information that would allow them – or any conspiracy theorists they share it with – to tamper with election equipment, interfere with the chain of custody of ballots, or impersonate a clerk on Election Day.I continue to call on Speaker Hall and his caucus to work with us and a judicial mediator to help us reach a resolution to this let's be clear: this clown show he is leading is no way to govern. It is not how we solve problems. It is not how we make government work for everyone. And every taxpayer dollar wasted on these shenanigans is a waste of time and money.I remain committed to the security of our elections and to the people of Michigan. I work for them. I suggest the House Republicans start doing the same. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
