Olesen takes PGA lead, Adam Scott jumps 33 places
Olesen followed an opening nine-under 62 on Thursday with a 66, hitting out of the rough to set up a five-foot birdie putt on his final hole - the par-4 ninth.
The 35-year-old Danish player also recovered from a double bogey on the par-4 15th with consecutive birdies as he searches for his first PGA Tour victory.
"I think both days, my iron play has been really, really good," Olesen said. "I hit a lot of shots really close to the pin and gave myself a lot of good chances.
"Today, there was like two or three bad drives that cost me, but I still felt pretty good over the ball."
He had a 14-under 128 total.
Knapp shot 65. Pierceson Coody (65) was another stroke back with Sam Stevens (68). Stevens closed with a bogey on No.9. Takumi Kanaya (64), Chris Kirk (67) and Matti Schmid (68) were 11 under.
With two weeks left in the regular season, Knapp (55th in the FedEx Cup standings), Schmid (68th) and Kirk (77th) remained in contention for the FedEx Cup Playoffs. The top 70 advance to the first playoff event.
Australia's Adam Scott fired a four-under 67 to move to six under and 33 places up the field.
The ultra-consistent Scott has made the playoffs in 17 out of 18 seasons, but is currently 85th in the standings.
The former world No.1 and 2013 Masters winner is the only Australian left in the field, the rest failing to make the five-under cut.
Cam Davis shot a 71 for a one-over total with the result dropping the Sydneysider four positions in the standings to 69.
Karl Vilips also had a 71 for his one-under total. The West Australian also lost ground in the standings, declining two spots to 83.
Olesen is a European tour regular with nine international victories. He missed the cut last week in the British Open in Northern Ireland.
"I take every week as it comes," Olesen said. "Every week is an opportunity to try and bounce back and do something special."
Knapp remained bogey-free through 36 holes for the first time in his career, starting out with birdies on Nos.10-12. He seeks his first PGA Tour win of the season after earning the first of his career in the 2024 Mexico Open.
"I feel like it's been ... kind of mistake-free for the most part," Knapp said. "I haven't really had to scramble too much."
Knapp had the lowest score on the PGA Tour this year, a 59 at the Cognizant Classic in February.
Adam Svensson nearly matched Knapp with a course-record 11-under 60 on Thursday, but dropped 29 spots Friday with a 75.

Scott's birdie binge keeps FedEx playoffs in sight
Adam Scott has rung off four consecutive birdies and shot a five-under-par 65 in the first round of the Wyndham Championship, not far from the position required to crash the FedEx Cup playoff starting next week. The Australian had missed a four-foot birdie at the Wyndham Championship in 2023 to snap his 16-year streak of reaching the playoff. He said he felt more "motivation" than pressure taking to the course knowing he likely requires a two-way tie for third or better to have a reason to fly to Memphis for the FedEx St. Jude next week. Scott finished the day in a tie for eighth, four shots adrift of leader Joel Dahmen who closed with three straight birdies for a 9-under 61. 4 straight birdies for Adam Scott! He's moved into the top-5 @WyndhamChamp.📺 @PGATOURLIVE on ESPN+ PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) July 31, 2025 That put him one shot ahead of Alex Noren with four others a further shot behind. To also reach the playoffs, Dahmen would need at least a runner-up finish with no more than two other players. "The playoffs are a bonus for me," he said. "I'm just going to go out and try to play good golf, and I guess if I play really well, then I get to play another week." Scott addressed his mindset heading into the tournament. "I'm going to need to get like 20-under to think of anything, so I better not be one-under through day one or I'm going to leave myself a lot of work, so nice to make a few birdies," Scott said. "And of course as much as I think about moving on, I'd like to win this tournament, so that's - it's a similar kind of scenario for me." Starting his round at the 10th hole, Scott turned in an uneven opening nine with two bogeys and three birdies. He clicked after making the turn, including a run of four consecutive birdies to climb the leaderboard. On the par-four, 426-yard fourth - Scott's 13th hole in the first round - he rolled home a birdie putt bending it back to the right from below the hole. At No.5, Scott stayed with the short stick from well off the front of the green with his third shot. From nearly 60ft out, he rolled the ball to a stop inside of two feet for the tap-in birdie and carded two more birdies at No.6 and No.7 to briefly jump into a tie for third. Perhaps his best shot of the day was the 33ft putt at the par-three seventh. It was his seventh birdie of the round. By the time he signed his scorecard, Scott and playing partner Jordan Spieth were tied for fifth and two back of the leaders. Scott has two top-10 finishes at Sedgefield. He did not play last year after taking second at the Scottish Open and tying for 10th in the Open Championship. This season has been more of a grind. Scott, who celebrated his 45th birthday two weeks ago, is still chasing his first top-10 in 2025. He last had a top-10 in 2024, at the BMW Championship where he tied for second. Fellow Australian Cameron Davis shot a two-under 68, seven off the lead.

Scott faces crunch time for FedEx Cup play-off hopes
Australia's former Masters champion Adam Scott has admitted it is "do or die" for his FedEx Cup playoff chances and hopes his last shot at qualifying will bring out his best golf. The 45-year-old currently sits 85th in the standings and needs to get into the top 70 to make the post-season run-in. To do that he has to finish no worse than in a two-way tie for third at the Wyndham Championship at the Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, North Carolina. "I'm really here focused on trying to win this tournament," said Scott, whose 16-year streak of making the playoffs ended in 2023. He returned last year to tie for fourth at the season-ending Tour Championship. "I actually think sometimes when it's like a last-chance thing, this will be my last chance to play on the PGA Tour potentially for some weeks, it's do or die and that's a fun way to play. "Sometimes we - or I - have fallen in the trap of like, 'there's always next week if it doesn't work out', and that's not the case here, so I think that's not a pressure but more motivation. "I feel like my game's been pretty good since May so I need to be on the front foot a little bit, I can't be sitting back waiting for it to happen." The Adelaide-born Scott has not won since 2020 and four years ago lost in a six-man play-off at the Wyndham. "I've really not had any momentum at all and it seems like I can put three rounds together but not four every week," he added. "I have full belief, especially after I've won, that I can play at the highest level on a given week. I think realistically it's harder for me to do it over a season. "I'm not saying it's impossible, but I need to get things more on my own terms to do that."

Kitayama holds on for second PGA Tour victory
Kurt Kitayama has finished a sizzling weekend with a final-round 65 to win the 3M Open, beating fellow American Sam Stevens by one stroke for his second PGA Tour victory. Kitayama, who shot a career-best and tournament-record-tying 60 on Saturday to enter the final round within one of the leaders, birdied six of the first eight holes to build a cushion on Sunday afternoon at the TPC Twin Cities. The 32-year-old took bogey on the par-3 17th hole for the third straight day, which shrunk his lead to one while playing in the second-to-last group. Stevens was one group ahead and failed to birdie the reachable par-5 18th. After hitting his approach on the closing hole into a greenside bunker, Kitayama safely blasted to 18 feet and easily two-putted for par, finishing at 23-under 261. US trio David Lipsky, Pierceson Coody and Jake Knapp tied for third along with England's Matt Wallace,, three strokes back. Kitayama, who previously won the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill in 2023, got a 500-point boost in the FedEx Cup standings to move inside the top 70 and secure a spot in the playoffs. He was projected to jump from 110th to 53rd. The Californian, who tied for sixth at the 3M Open last year, has missed seven cuts this season. He tied for fifth twice, at the John Deere Classic and the CJ Cup Byron Nelson. Kitayama had his approach game in prime form. He hit his second shot on the par-4 14th from a fairway bunker within two feet of the hole for the last of his 20 birdies on the weekend. Stevens made five birdies on the back nine, continuing his strong season that includes three top-three finishes. He was second at the Farmers Insurance Open. The 29-year-old Texan is still seeking his first win, but this finish pushes him from 44th to 29th in the FedEx Cup with one event left in the regular season. Akshay Bhatia (75) and Thorbjorn Olesen (73) were the co-leaders going into Sunday, but the final pairing had a disappointing finish. Australia's Adam Scott had a final-round 72 to end T53 at 10 under.
