‘Final Destination: Bloodlines' tops box office while The Weeknd's movie falters
Death is not looming for the 'Final Destination' franchise at the box office.
Its sixth installment, 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,' drew big crowds to movie theaters this weekend and easily topped the domestic charts with $51 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday. The movie earned the same internationally, adding up to a $102 million global debut.
The same enthusiasm did not meet Abel 'The Weeknd' Tesfaye's experimental thriller 'Hurry Up Tomorrow,' which opened outside of the top five with an estimated $3.3 million.
'It was always going to have a tough time coming up against 'Final Destination: Bloodlines,'' said Paul Dergarabedian, the senior media analyst for Comscore. 'There was a lot of buzz.'
'Final Destination: Bloodlines' opened in 3,523 locations riding in on a wave of strong reviews (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and viral marketing tactics, including a picture of logs on the back of trucks — a callback to one of the more infamous 'Final Destination' death traps.
'Final Destination's' win effectively revives a 25-year-old franchise that hasn't had a new film since 2011. It also continues a hot streak for Warner Bros., which has had near back-to-back hits in Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' and 'A Minecraft Movie.' All three were in the top five this weekend.
Disney's 'Thunderbolts' landed in second with $16.5 million, pushing its global total to over $325 million. 'Sinners' placed third with $15.4 million, bringing its global total to $316.8 million. 'A Minecraft Movie,' which has made $928.6 million globally, added $5.9 million. Amazon MGM Studios' 'The Accountant 2' rounded out the top five.
'Hurry Up Tomorrow' opened in sixth place. The film, which Tesfaye co-wrote and Trey Edward Shults directed, is a kind of companion piece to his album and tour. He plays a fictionalized version of himself as an insomniac musician. Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan also star.
Neither critics nor audiences greeted it kindly: It carries a 13% on Rotten Tomatoes and was slapped with a C- CinemaScore. AP music writer Maria Sherman wrote that it's 'an exciting vanity project with surrealist imagination but stiff writing, no stakes, limited emotional weight and an unclear narrative.'
Lionsgate only handled the release of the R-rated film, which opened on over 2,000 screens and its $3.3 million was enough to make it a profitable deal for the studio.
Next weekend could be a big one for movie theaters as 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' and the live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' both open nationwide. The overall domestic box office remains up nearly 15% from last year.
'This weekend is the perfect opening act for what could be one of the biggest Memorial weekends at the box office ever,' Dergarabedian said.

2. 'Thunderbolts,' $16.5 million.
3. 'Sinners,' $15.4 million.
4. 'A Minecraft Movie,' $5.9 million.
5. 'The Accountant 2,' $5 million.

2 Reasons AMC Stock Is Soaring in June
AMC (NYSE: AMC) is the largest movie theater operator in the world, but being the leader in a troubled industry hasn't done much for the company over the past few years. With the advent of streaming and residual fears from the pandemic, moviegoing just isn't what it once was and AMC continues to struggle. However, Memorial Day weekend was a boon for the company and AMC stock has been climbing. Let's see why and what it means for the future. Where to invest $1,000 right now? Our analyst team just revealed what they believe are the 10 best stocks to buy right now. Continue » 1. It's riding on the success of two smash-hit films Streaming from home has taken a toll on the box office, but there is still life left in theaters. Four of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever were released since the pandemic started, including Avatar: The Way of Water in the No. 3 spot and last year's Inside Out 2. People are still going to the movies. That fact was reinforced with a record Memorial Day weekend in May. Disney 's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch had the highest-ever four-day Memorial Day opening, and it was buttressed by a strong showing for Paramount 's Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning. Altogether, these two topped a blowout weekend with $326.7 million in domestic ticket sales, and Lilo & Stitch is already the second-highest-grossing domestic film of the year. Of course, that success trickled down to generate incredible financial results for AMC. Management said it set an all-time record for admissions revenue, food and beverage revenue, and total revenue for a weekend Memorial Day opening, and that the five-day stretch was the third-highest revenue for any five-day slot in more than 10 years. As for attendance, this was the highest-attended weekend and highest-attended five-day period of the year, both domestically and globally. Management didn't provide specific financial metrics for the weekend, so investors aren't likely to hear the nitty-gritty details until the second-quarter earnings release sometime in July or August. But management's update and optimism are boosting investor confidence. 2. It may have turned a corner It's nice for the company to have a solid, record-breaking opening, but can it last? Management thinks so, and the market may be pricing that in. CEO Adam Aron said that after this weekend, AMC has turned a corner. "With many more potentially huge movies coming in June all the way through the end of 2025, and beyond that deeply into 2026 as well," he said, "we firmly expect to be enjoying a robust theatrical box office as we look ahead." Here's what to be excited about. Disney has a full slate of films coming out over the next few years, including the third film in the Avatar series. The first two are the highest-grossing and third-highest-grossing films ever, and the next film is slated for release this coming December. It also has the next Frozen film and other top franchises coming out soon. Warner Bros. has its own expected hits coming out, including a new Superman, and Comcast 's Universal Studios has the next installment of Wicked and a new Shrek. Sequels to popular franchises can be big business. But the company is still reporting revenue declines and losses as of the 2025 first quarter. It will take some time to see if AMC has indeed turned a corner. The short sellers are out As the price has increased in June, so has the short interest in AMC, hitting almost 15% of all outstanding shares. These investors are betting on this being a short-term boost and that the price will fall from this surge. Even though AMC stock is up 29% over the past month, it's still down 15% year-to-date. Unless the company releases incredibly strong earnings for the second quarter and keeps up its performance, the price jump may not last. Part of what's frustrating about that for investors is that many variables are beyond the company's control. It's up to film producers to create hit movies that bring viewers into theaters and to make the decision to keep them there long enough before they hit streaming services. That can be quite lumpy. You need to have real confidence in the future of the film industry and the resilience of theaters as a beckoning call for die-hard fans to want to invest in AMC's future, and for most investors, that time isn't now. Should you invest $1,000 in AMC Entertainment right now? Before you buy stock in AMC Entertainment, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and AMC Entertainment wasn't one of them. ‘The Wilde Girls' Takes Manhattan By Storm, Certified Fresh And Funny As Hell
Indie Cult Contender, The Wilde Girls, Opens at Cinema Village with Critical Raves and a 91% Audience Score. NEW YORK, NY - June 6, 2025 - The Wilde Girls, the irreverent, Depression-era survival comedy with 21st-century attitude, has officially crash-landed in Manhattan — and it's bringing big laughs, bigger heart, and even bigger buzz. Opening today at Cinema Village in Greenwich Village, this madcap indie gem has already earned its stripes, including Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes and an impressive 91% audience score. The uproarious film by director Timothy Hines is drawing critical applause, and the kind of word-of-mouth usually reserved for future cult classics. Beloved New York critic Avi Offer calls it ' a wildly original and side-splitting satire… Think Romy & Michele meets Bringing Up Baby by way of *Hundreds of Beavers. ' Offer's glowing Rotten Tomatoes review praises the film's 'razor-sharp wit,' 'perfectly outrageous tone,' and 'a police station scene that almost rivals Bringing Up Baby.' THE STORY: When spoiled New York heiresses Mattie and Tinsley Wilde lose their fortune during the Great Depression, they're exiled to the unforgiving forests of Oregon—where they suspect their conniving aunts have hired an assassin to kill them. Left with nothing but couture baggage and a jammed rifle, they stumble into the path of a reclusive mountain man who may or may not be more trouble than he's worth. What unfolds is an anarchic fish-out-of-water survival comedy with wild twists, unexpected heart, and enough absurdity to make Broad City blush. Think Legally Blonde meets The Revenant —with a side of Clue and screwball charm. Above: The Wilde Girls. PENDRAGON PICTURES. THE CAST: Cali Scolari brings bold, hilarious chaos to the role of Mattie Wilde, the older sister with the perfect blend of awkwadness and accidental badassery. The daughter of beloved Emmy-winner Peter Scolari (Bosom Buddies, Newhart, Girls), Cali proves she's a rising comedic force to watch. Lydia Pearl Pentz, hailed by critics as 'a fresh, multi-layered force,' plays younger sister Tinsley with a shopping addiction and a flair for drama. It's a breakout performance from the Vancouver-born actor lighting up the indie scene. Teddy Smith, downtown NYC comedy regular and scene-stealer, plays Silas, the possibly deranged, definitely unforgettable mountain man who's as unpredictable as a bear in a liquor store. THE BUZZ: After a raucous premiere at Laemmle NoHo 7 in Los Angeles, The Wilde Girls stormed onto Rotten Tomatoes with Certified Fresh status, bolstered by glowing reviews and an outpouring of audience love. With comparisons to screwball classics and indie darlings alike, the film is quickly becoming the talk of the town. Critics praise its 'bones of a classic and the bite of something totally fresh,' and audiences are lining up in Lower Manhattan, NYU, and the East Village for the kind of laugh-out-loud theatrical experience that's increasingly rare. Why You Should Go: If you're anywhere near Union Square, Tompkins Square Park, or grabbing cold brew on St. Mark's, you're dangerously close to missing the indie comedy of the summer. This is a movie to see with a crowd, where gasps, howls, and 'OMG same' moments roll through the theater like waves.
