
Caution urged over donations for Ar-Ridzuan Mosque wakaf land
IPOH: Muslims in Perak have been urged to be cautious when making donations to reclaim part of the Ar-Ridzuan Jamek Mosque wakaf (endowment) land in Alor Pongsu, Bagan Serai, which is currently owned by a non-Muslim.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said this is to prevent opportunistic individuals from taking advantage of the issue.
'This always happens – when someone collects donations in the name of charity, there will be others who try to exploit the situation and trap the donors.
'We hope the public will remain vigilant so that their intention to donate does not go to waste. For such donation matters, the responsible parties are the Perak Islamic Religious Department (JAIPk) and the mosque committee itself,' he said.
He told this to reporters after launching the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) Supplementary Reference Book Initiative under the Cikgu Saarani Tuition Programme at Bangunan Darul Ridzuan here today.
Earlier, it was reported that RM1.8 million is needed to recover a portion of the mosque's land, estimated at 0.61 hectares, which is owned by a non-Muslim individual. The land, previously endowed (wakaf) for the mosque's construction, had been sold off by the original wakaf giver's grandchild.
However, the current owner has agreed to resell the land, prompting the state government to decide that Friday prayer donations from mosques across the state will be used to fund the repurchase.
Meanwhile, Saarani expressed his appreciation for the financial contributions already made in support of the cause.
On the programme, Saarani said a total of 52,000 sets of supplementary reference books covering six core subjects will be distributed free of charge to selected students throughout Perak.
The six subjects are Bahasa Melayu, History, English, Mathematics, Islamic Education, and Science.

Sabah GLCs mostly ‘blackholes'

Kota Kinabalu: A majority of the 250-odd Sabah GLCs (Government-linked companies) are like 'blackholes' sucking away financial resources from Sabah. But there are a few bright stars. 'These statutory bodies and GLCs produced only RM143m dividends to the Sabah Government, of which RM50m was from SMJ Energy. Only a small number can generate dividends for the government. The performance of the rest is pathetic,' said Datuk John Lo, a former banker and now in the Sabah Economic Action Council (SEAC). Advertisement The other profitable GLCs include Sabah Foundation's subsidiary Innoprise, Sabah Energy Corporation, Sogip, Sogdc, POIC Lahad Datu, Suria Capital, Sabah Credit Corporation and Sawit Kinabalu. Lo was a guest panel speaker at the NGO Sabar – Kopi Tiam Council podcast on 'Oversight & Reform of government-Linked Companies (GLCs) Transparency, accountability & Corruption Prevention session, recently. 'Most are either non-performing or underperforming,' Lo said and pointed out that GLCs hold many monopolistic rights for example, cement [Sabah Cement Industries], ports [Suria, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu], water [Jetama] and fishing landing rights [Safma]. They have been granted very cheap but extremely prime land, most of them at RM1,000 premium. [Innoprise, SUDC, subsidiary of Sedco, Suria, SICC, Sabah Energy, TAED.]. Advertisement Others have been vast acreage of valuable agricultural land for free or at nominal premium. [Sawit Kinabalu, KPD, Sabah Softwood.] Then there are those who have been granted cheap and valuable land for industrial park [KKIP, Sogip, POIC Sandakan and POIC Lahad Datu, Asian Supply Base in Labuan] or granted concession rights in oil and gas, river and sea sand [Sabah Energy, Sabah Gas, SMJ Energy, Sedco]. GLCs are also into hotels, resorts and jungle resorts [Innoprise, Sedco and Sabah Air] or granted exclusive JV preference with Sabahan and non-Sabahan companies. 'Most significantly, many GLCs have become a huge liability and drag on Sabah's economic growth. Allowing GLCs to continue without proper governance will result in serious economic consequences. Sabah can never catch up,' he said. In most cases the political appointments of chairmen, board of directors and senior management have been inappropriate. 'GLCs are still bleeding losses year in year out. Sabahans are subsiding these losses that have easily run into billions the last 35 years. The accumulated losses are staggering,' he said. What is worse is that some of these GLCs have sold or entered into JVs in many valuable assets like prime commercial and agriculture land, buildings, monopolies and concessions, most of which are lopsided against Sabah. These GLCs have taken huge loans from the government and banks [especially SDB] that they cannot service or repay, often forcing Sabah taxpayers to bail them out. 'They enter into many lopsided JV agreements against the interests of Sabah. They have the greatest number of failed JV projects that need rescue by 'white knights'. 'These billions of dividends can be tax free and can transform Sabah's economic ownership back to Sabahans. The greatest impact is job creation. If each GLC, on average, can create an additional 100 jobs, there will be additional 25,000 jobs!' said Lo. 'This money could have been used for the hard-core poor, repair or investment in infrastructures, health, scholarships or to build two or three universities. 'The GLCs have many JV projects that are suspended or non-start for years.' 'SDB's revamp is showing encouraging results. Keep an eye on Sabah Energy as it will be the new performing star.' Lo was pleased that Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor has appointed suitable Sabahans to head some boards and management e.g. SDB, SMJ Energy, Sabah Energy, Sogip, Sogdc and the latest, a new Group GM for Sedco. Hajiji has appointed advisors on the economy, oil and gas, energy, tourism and international affairs. Notably, he said state Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun has appointed a task force on GLCs. Masidi has also appointed an oversight committee for GLCs. 'Hopefully, the revamp of GLCs will lead some of them to be listed on Bursa. Bursa will impose demanding and stringent governance requirements on these GLCs. 'GLCs that have independent board of directors and professional management appointed by Hajiji and Masidi are turning around with noticeable improvements. 'It is imperative that future Sabah governments continue to revamp, rationalise the GLCs. 'Focusing on and sorting out the mess in Sabah's GLCs is a critical economic issue for every Sabahan, especially for the present young generation and their children. These GLCs are eroding away their future. 'I hope all Sabahans, every man, every woman, every voter, after listening to Sabar's podcast, will support the reformation, transformation and rationalization of Sabah's GLCs. O'Briens Malaysia: Fresh, fast and balanced
ON the sandwich shop spectrum, O'Briens Irish Sandwich Cafe Malaysia (O'Briens) falls on the slightly more premium end but customers are known to get what they pay for – sandwiches crafted to international standards with high-quality, fresh ingredients. Speaking to theSun, O'Briens managing director and master franchise holder Brian Pua explained that the success of the brand over the past two decades is the result of his team's relentless commitment in upholding the highest standards in food quality, customer service and healthy food products. Opening its first outlet in Malaysia at Great Eastern Mall in Kuala Lumpur back in 2002, O'Briens quickly expanded under Pua's stewardship to over 30 locations, largely in urban areas. Though the 'Irish' in its name may give some pause, Pua stressed that O'Briens is halal-certified, which was his very intention from the opening of the initial Malaysian outlet. 'As a cafe offering what many consider comfort food, it was important for us to target the halal status. Now, all our food is halal-certified, so our Muslim customers can enjoy their meals with confidence,' Pua explained. 'From the start, it was very clear how we would serve our customers,' he said. Healthy eating, local flavours O'Briens was one of the first businesses in the country's food and beverage landscape to push the concept of fresh and nutritious food – even if the general awareness on how both went hand in hand with living a healthy lifestyle was not as prevalent. Pua believes the pandemic drove a change in attitudes. 'It was when people began to have more awareness on the importance of taking care of their immune system by consuming more natural, fresh food products. 'People now look for meals that support their lifestyle, where they want something balanced, fresh and satisfying. We are proud to be part of that movement and it is great to see so many regulars who have made O'Briens part of their everyday routine,' he said. Yet, O'Briens is not rigid in its offerings. Over time, the brand has adapted – or rather tweaked – its menu to suit local tastes while maintaining its original values. 'Being a Malaysian myself has helped guide O'Briens. In the beginning, we looked at introducing Irish sandwiches, the concept and lifestyle to the Malaysian market. Over time, we looked into the taste of what O'Briens offered,' he said. Giving an example, Pua cited how Malaysians liked spicy food. This eventually led to the O'Briens menu adopting items such as the Piri-Piri Chicken Multigrain and the Volcanic Chicken Wrap. 'Another thing was the demand for vegetarian options and we answered it with a wide range of vegetarian offerings such as the Watercress Sandwich and even those that combined the spicy and vegetarian taste portfolio, such as the Sundried Tomato on Hot Ciabatta, which is popular with vegetarians,' he pointed out. 'We put in the effort to make each and every sandwich have its own unique identity by increasing the taste portfolio, while staying true to our Irish roots and the philosophy of clean, nutritious eating'. Listening to lifestyles Today, O'Briens continues to adapt to what consumers are looking for. To Pua, this means always having his ear to the ground. On top of integrating new technology into its operations, O'Briens is working with the fitness industry, finding new ways to approach the food and beverage landscape. They are already taking into consideration what gym-goers want. 'We have done surveys with them to develop our salads to be low in carbohydrates and high in protein, while striking a balance between the health aspect and the taste of our food,' Pua said. While the brand is known for promoting healthy foods and living, one element is conspiciously missing from its clean and attractive menu – nutritional information for each item, with calories, protein, carbohydrates, fats in gram and so on clearly stated. 'We are currently working on it,' Pua exclaimed with a laugh. 'In fact, our halal quality control team already has all the information for each product and very soon, we will incorporate it into our menu. 'We want our customers to know the nutritional value of what they consume and they can plan their meals. That is also what we want to encourage our customers to do, which is to have a balanced diet,' he said.
