The once industry leader, Ola Electric , reported a dismal March quarter, with a sizeable fall in its revenue and losses expanding twofold. In comparison, the recently listed Ather Energy posted a decent improvement in financials for the quarter. For the quarter ended March, the Bhavish Aggarwal-led electric scooter maker reported a 62% decline in sales to Rs 611 crore, a precursor to the decline in market share two months later. The EV maker saw its loss double to Rs 870 crore, from Rs 416 crore in the year-ago period.Ola Electric's financials were impacted by a one-time issue with the registration process, founder Bhavish Aggarwal on an earnings call. In February, Vahan data showed only 8,652 registrations for Ola Electric, while the company claimed sales of 25,000 units in its filings. The discrepancy was attributed to a temporary backlog caused by ongoing contract renegotiations with registration service providers Rosmerta and Shimnit India. The issues have been resolved in the current quarter, the CEO said.Ather, the only other listed pure-play electric two-wheeler manufacturer, reported a 29% increase in operating revenue to Rs 676.1 crore, up from Rs 523.4 crore in the same period last year. Its losses narrowed 17% year-on-year (YoY) to Rs 234.4 crore on the back of rising volumes and improved margins.Ola Electric had the lead in units sold at 51,375 scooters, but Ather managed a close 47,411 units. While the former has started deliveries on its Roadster X motorcycles, Ather is working on developing its own line, funded by a part of its IPO proceeds Ola Electric managed to reduce expenses by 31.6% to Rs 1,306 crore, largely due to a nearly Rs 1,000 crore cut in material costs. Ather on the other hand saw expenses rise 12.6% to Rs 922.2 crore from Rs 818.7 crore a year ago, mainly due to higher material costs, even as employee benefit expenses declined 29% to Rs 109.1 crore. The Ola S1 maker has guided for a better June quarter, though. 'If you look at our Q1 outlook, we are sharing a revenue forecast of about Rs 800-850 crore, about 65,000 deliveries and a gross margin of about 28–30%, which is much higher than Q4,' said Aggarwal in a post-earnings call. The company will be careful with allocating capital and managing risk, Aggarwal had said.Ather is targeting profitability, going forward. 'I think (there are) very strong levers for operating leverage in the coming quarters, which will hopefully get us to profitability soon. For us, profitability could happen at a lower scale than some of the other peers, given our more capital-light and more capital-efficient approach on business overall,' cofounder Tarun Mehta had said.

Now, FIR for 7cr NREGA scam in Bharuch

Surat: Police registered an FIR on Friday for an alleged scam worth Rs 7 crore in the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) scheme in Bharuch district. This came after an inquiry was conducted by the Bharuch district panchayat and the district rural development agency (DRDA). The inquiry uncovered irregularities worth Rs 19 lakh in 11 road projects executed by two agencies. The scope of the ongoing investigation covers road works in over 50 villages, including scrutiny of construction materials used. The agencies submitted bills for the completed work and received payment accordingly. Meanwhile, Sahara Infrastructure Co, based in Bhalpura village along the Somnath-Jetpur Highway, submitted a complaint to the additional commissioner of rural development on March 13, 2024. It alleged that payments were made to these agencies in violation of tender rules. After this, DRDA Bharuch was directed to begin an inquiry. The inquiry found that the agencies compromised on construction material quality and failed to adhere to NREGA rules on labour deployment. "According to the scheme, 60% of the project cost must go towards labour and 40% to materials. The accused did not comply with this ratio. In some cases, materials specified in the tender were not used, and in others substandard materials were used," said Vasava. "The FIR is currently based on findings from 11 villages involving Rs 19 lakh in irregularities. However, road work was carried out in over 50 villages, and the total scam value may exceed Rs 7 crore," a police official added.

According to sources, the varsity is waiting for govt funds to pay the pension this month. Meanwhile, pensioners are demanding financial discipline in the UoM to save the institute from bankruptcy. Every month, the university requires Rs.8.5 crore to pay the pension for its retired staff. For the last few months, the UoM has been totally dependent on govt support to pay pensions. According to the pensioners, the pension amount was generally credited to their bank accounts on the last date of every month. "But in recent months, it was delayed to the second or third day of the next month. This month, it is expected to be delayed again as the govt is yet to release funds," explained a pensioner who wished to remain unnamed. "With no funds, the university is totally dependent on the govt for the money to release pensions. So, it is getting delayed," a pensioner explained. Lokanath NK, VC, UoM, informed that the university is waiting for govt funds to pay the pension. "The govt assured us of releasing money in this regard. Once we receive funds, pensions will be paid," he explained. Pensioners Association president K Mahadev stated that the situation is worrying. "The pension fund became empty due to the excess recruitment of temporary non-teaching staff," he alleged. "The university authorities recruited hundreds of excess non-teaching staff. Politicians, irrespective of party affiliation, secured jobs for their candidates in the university. There is no space for these staff to sit in the departments. These excess recruitments resulted in the financial crisis," he alleged.
