Breakthrough in DJ Sumbody murder: Suspects to appear in court
Four suspects are scheduled to appear in court on July 22 for the alleged killing of popular Pretoria DJ and businessman, Oupa John Sefoka, also known as 'DJ Sumbody'.
The group faces charges that include murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The SAPS Political Killings Task Team made this breakthrough almost three years after Sefoka was killed in a hail of bullets in November 2022.
He was coming from a gig in Woodmead when he and his security detail were allegedly ambushed near the Engen Woodlands in Sandton.
Sefoka was a renowned South African DJ, radio personality, and successful co-owner of the restaurant and entertainment bar Ayepyep in Cape Town, Top-Notch restaurant in Pretoria, and other ventures.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said on June 21 that the team arrested four men, between 45 and 60, in connection with the murder of Sefoka.
Mathe stated that the Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives worked on the case, and later called in the SAPS Political Killings Task Team to assist them.
'The arrests were all effected in Gauteng on Monday afternoon. Three of the suspects are believed to be hitmen, and one is believed to have ordered the hit on the DJ,' she explained.
Mathe said the weapon allegedly used in the commission of the crime was seized and has since been linked to other murders.
'All four suspects are in police custody and are expected to appear in court,' she added.
The National Commissioner of the SAPS, General Fannie Masemola, has welcomed the latest breakthrough by the SAPS Political Killings Task Team, working closely with Gauteng Organised Crime Detectives.
Masemola said that this is a significant breakthrough that will hopefully provide closure to families involved.
'Well done to the teams that have been piecing together evidence since November 2022. This is a culmination of hard work and dedication to justice. This is one of those complex cases that our teams needed to take their time in ensuring a thorough investigation so that we could ultimately bring a strong case before court,' said Masemola.

JOHANNESBURG - An AK-47 rifle has connected the murders of popular musicians, including Oupa Sefoka, and other high-profile killings linked to controverial businessman, Katiso "KT" Molefe. Molefe returned to the Alexandra Magistrate's Court with three others for the murder of Sefoka, who was better known as DJ Sumbody. But police revealed that the dodgy businessman had also been charged for the murder of another musician, Hector Buthelezi, known as DJ Vintos. His co-accused have also been charged for another hit. Katiso "KT" Molefe is already facing murder charges for the hit on Vereening engineer, Armand Swart, in April 2024. Last week, he was charged for being the alleged mastermind behind DJ Sumbody's murder and on Tuesday he was linked to the killing of another popular musician, DJ Vintos. The police's Athlenda Mathe said the links we made through ballistic testing. "The AK47 and the three pistols that were found on the Armand Swart case and were linked to his case, we're linking it to the killing of DJ Vintos and the killing of DJ Sumbody and his bodyguards." Mathe said that the same gun was also linked to the 2023 hit on a man identified as Don Tindleni, who was shot while driving in his BMW on the N1 highway in March 2023. Mathe said that apart from the ballistic evidence, the police had more solid evidence against Molefe and his co-accused.

Athletics South Africa president and board given 7 days to resign: Protest action looms
A storm is brewing in South African athletics as a group calling itself 'concerned athletes and administrators' called for the immediate resignation of the Athletics South Africa (ASA) board during a fiery press conference in Milpark yesterday. Benoni City Times reports that, citing deep-rooted governance failures and alleged misuse of funds, the group, led by ASA board member Dorah Mgwevu, athletics administrator Ernest Moikangoe, and athlete Keneilwe Sesing, issued a bold ultimatum that ASA President James Moloi and his board have seven days to step down or face protest action. 'We, the concerned stakeholders, administrators, civil society organisations and citizens of South Africa, demand the immediate resignation of the ASA leadership, including the CEO and entire board of directors,' said Moikangoe. The veteran official said this follows recent allegations that Moloi had used ASA funds for personal gain. This was revealed last month during an oversight hearing by Parliament's Sports, Arts and Culture portfolio committee. The hearing quizzed Moloi about using the federation's credit card at various taverns and liquor stores. 'The findings presented in parliament are a national embarrassment and betrayal of public trust. They paint a picture of an organisation in complete disarray where corruption, neglect of athletes, and gross abuse of funds have become institutionalised. 'We can no longer tolerate a leadership that has repeatedly failed to safeguard the integrity of sport in South Africa.' The group demands the appointment of an interim committee and the launch of a full forensic investigation by the Special Investigating Unit into ASA financial activities from 2020 to 2025. 'Our sport is not a fiefdom for thieves and opportunists. ASA is meant to serve athletes – not to fund parties, taverns and corrupt deals,' Moikangoe said. Should the ASA board fail to resign within seven days, Moikangoe said the group will stage a protest at ASA headquarters and petition World Athletics to suspend the federation until their demands are met. Mgwevu echoed Moikangoe's sentiments, saying Moloi should step aside to allow SASCOC's investigation into ASA's financial irregularities – including whether funds were misused – to proceed without his interference. 'The president must step aside. We are aware of the ongoing investigation. 'How do we have this investigation when the accused person still has access to information and witnesses? Will this be a fair investigation? 'We appeal for Moloi to step aside and allow this investigation to take place fairly.' In a statement, ASA condemned the press briefing, saying it was reviewing the matters raised in parliament. 'ASA is currently reviewing the recent matters raised in parliament and has pledged to fully cooperate with the SASCOC investigation. 'We are committed to transparency and accountability. We will work closely with SASCOC to address any concerns.'

Six-year-old dies in Mamelodi shack fire
A six-year-old child tragically lost their life in a shack fire in Mamelodi East Extension 6 on Sunday night, 27 July 2025. Tshwane firefighters responded swiftly to the blaze, managing to contain the flames and prevent further destruction, while six other residents—one of whom sustained minor burn injuries—escaped with their lives. Tshwane Emergency Service Department spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said the incident was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre at about 21:33. 'Firefighting resources were immediately dispatched from Mamelodi Fire Station to the scene. These included a water carrier and a bush pumper.' On arrival the firefighters found out that three shacks were involved in fire. 'They immediately began with firefighting operations and managed to stop the fire from destroying all three shacks. 'They protected the main house and one shack. However, they discovered that in one of the shacks, a six-year old child had sadly suffered fatal burn injuries.' Mnguni said six other tenants survived the fire, including a child who had suffered minor burn injuries and was treated on the scene by the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services. The child was then transported by ambulance to Stanza Bopape Clinic for further medical observation. The South African Police Service and other roleplayers such as community leaders were also on the scene, and they assisted with incident management. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Tshwane Emergency Services Department urges communities to remain vigilant and be cautious during winter to prevent and eliminate incidents of this nature that can have a disastrous effect on families and the community. To report any fire or rescue incident, members of the public are encouraged to call 107 toll-free or, alternatively, to call 012 358 6300/6400. Mnguni advised resident to remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are to give the correct address, and give your correct contact number so that the operator can phone you back, should they need to do so.
