London's Natural History Museum is home to some 80 million natural specimens - and now, it has is one more.
Among the museum's impressive dinosaur collection, the skeleton of an Enigmacursor is a relatively small, but significant, new exhibit.
"So Enigmacursor is a small plant-eating dinosaur. It walked around on its hind legs, would have been quite a speedy runner. And it's a fairly rare animal from this time and from this part of the world. It comes from the Western USA, from Colorado, and it lived about 150 million years ago and would have be scuttling around the feet of more famous dinosaurs like Stegosaurus and Diplodocus."
Professor Paul Barratt is a palaeontologist at the museum, whose research helped identify this new dinosaur species.
The Enigmacursor roamed the Earth in the late Jurassic period but remained unknown until a remarkably intact skeleton was unearthed from a quarry nearly four years ago.
It was initially described as a nanosaurus, a poorly-known species first recorded in the 1870s.
Until, that is, the fossil's discovery solved a tantalising mystery.
Researcher Professor Susannah Maidment explains:
'Enigma means puzzle, of course, and this is in reference to this sort of complicated naming history of these sorts of dinosaurs. There's been up to eight or nine different names given to these fragmentary, tantalising remains and we couldn't figure it out until we found this nice more complete skeleton, so that's the enigma part. Now cursor means runner so this is in reference for the dinosaur's very long hind limbs and very big feet."
As well as powerful legs and huge feet, the Enigmacursor boasts a long swooping tail.
At just 64 centimetres tall and 180 centimetres long, it is much smaller than Jurassic giants like the 25-metre long Diplodocus.
But Professor Paul Barrett says this small creature could shed light on how its bigger cousins developed.
"This little dinosaur fills an evolutionary gap. So it is somewhere in between the origin of the big group that includes things like Stegosaurus and Triceratops and their relatives, and the development of the weird features we see in those groups. So if you like, it's the template on which those weirder, bigger dinosaurs were built. And it helps us to understand how those different features started to come into existence. And it also shows us what these late Jurassic ecosystems were like. They weren't just dominated by huge long-necked dinosaurs or huge predators, but also a cast of characters of smaller dinosaurs that are making a living in different ways."
More research is now needed to confirm whether other specimens previously thought to be nanosaurus are also different species.
Professor Sarah Maidment says it's very likely.
"It tells us that there were actually more of these small dinosaurs than we thought previously, because in our investigations in other US collections and museums, what we discovered was that there are a whole range of little fragments of bones that are different from Enigmacursor, but are from this sort of dinosaur. So we think that the diversity of these sorts of dinosaurs was greater than we previously realised."
The dinosaur's full name - Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae - credits the private donor who helped the Museum acquire the fossil.
Professor Barrett says new species of dinosaur are being found all the time, but the discovery of a skeleton such as this is rare.

An "incredibly valuable" fossil pearl, slightly bigger than a marble, has been uncovered in outback Queensland. The precious find was dug up in Richmond — between Mount Isa and Townsville — an area renowned for its significant fossil discoveries. University of Queensland palaeontologist Gregory Webb, who verified the fossil pearl over two years, said it was the largest of its age found in Australia. At nearly 2 centimetres in diameter, he said it was "bigger than a typical marble". "From a scientific point of view, it's incredibly valuable and extremely rare." The fossil pearl was found by a tourist visiting Richmond's Kronosaurus Korner museum in 2019. Tourists in the town of about 500 people can obtain a permit to dig in the museum's palaeontological pits under the provision they donate anything they find of scientific value. Long-time volunteer digger Barbara Flewelling accepted the intriguing artefact from the tourist. "We've been volunteering at Kronosaurus Korner for 17 years and this is the first one that we're aware of." She said staff turnover at the museum and pandemic lockdowns delayed its verification in Brisbane. The precious find was then assessed by Professor Webb and a small team of researchers for nearly two years. "We have undertaken some really high-tech analysis of this particular specimen so that we could look inside it without damaging it, and we have verified it is in fact the pearl," he said. Professor Webb said under other circumstances it likely would have been a faster process. "There aren't very many palaeontologists and the technology is in huge demand," he said. The pearl has been returned to Richmond, where it is now on display at the museum. Professor Webb said only two other prehistoric pearls, both dug out of Cooper Pedy in South Australia, had been verified in Australia. But he said those finds were smaller and technically opalised pearls, not the original pearls. He said the "incredibly high quality, real scientific treasure" found at Richmond had barely been altered in its 100 million years. Professor Webb said that was due to the pearl forming in a clamshell composed of the mineral calcite, which was more stable than aragonite, the material that modern-day pearls were largely composed of. While the pearl is rare, the Inoceramus bivalve clam that made it was common during the Cretaceous period 100 million years ago. The extinct giant clams grew up to 50cm in diameter in what is now outback Australia, but could reach up to 2 metres in other parts of the world. Richmond, where the fossil pearl was found, was 40m underwater covered by the inland Eromanga Sea, which stretched from Cape York to northern New South Wales. The area, known for its fossils, draws visitors from across the globe, who have unearthed other underwater creatures such as the Kronosaurus and Ichthyosaurus. Kronosaurus Korner founder Rob Ivers said findings such as the pearl would help tourism in the region. "Obviously, people from across the country hear something like this travelling through Richmond, they'll certainly call into the museum," he said. Professor Webb said discoveries such as the pearl helped scientists understand how fauna adapted to changes in climate. "Ancient clams were similar to modern clams in that if they got some irritant inside the shell, they would simply grow shell around it to protect themselves," he said. "By looking at how ancient biology, ecosystems and individual communities adapted to things that were changing around them, it gives us a better understanding of how our modern biology reacts as well. "That helps us project what might happen in the future."

The Great Smog of London spurred William Wood to action after arriving in Tasmania. He was only 10 years old when smoke from coal burning cloaked the English capital and killed thousands in the winter of 1952. But it left a strong impression on the young Dr Wood, who grew up on a farm in Northamptonshire. "You'd see these photographs where you couldn't actually see a power pole in front of you. You couldn't drive a car," he said. The crisis finally prompted the British government to ban coal use for home heating, eventually leading to dramatic improvements in air quality. Dr Wood contemplated this public policy success story after moving to Tasmania in the early 1990s and learning of terrible air pollution from wood heaters across its valley regions. With concerns about air pollution surfacing once again, he believes more could still be done to address the longstanding problem. Despite Tasmania's clean, green reputation, air quality plummets across many valley regions during winter, as the landscape and weather traps smoke, which is largely emitted by residential wood heaters. But when Dr Wood first started as an environmental scientist for Tasmania's then-Environment and Land Management Department in 1990, the problem was far worse. Neither could James Markos, who started work as a respiratory physician at Launceston General Hospital around the same time. "I was not [previously] aware of just how much fog and smog there was," he said. "It was just amazing." Dr Wood and Dr Markos were both members of the 16-person working group set up to investigate air pollution, environmental health and respiratory diseases in 1991. Their 100-plus-page report, published in 1996, linked wood heaters to air pollution and increasing respiratory disease, and called for "all possible measures" to address the issue "as a matter of urgency". Dr Wood said the cause then gained momentum, leading to media campaigns, brochure drops and even lessons about wood heater use in schools. From 2001-2013 the federal government and the Launceston City Council funded a wood heater buyback program. "The public awareness and these incentives did reduce pollution," Mr Markos said. In 2013, researchers found air pollution dropped significantly in Launceston between 1994 and 2007, saving lives. But Dr Markos worries interest in air quality is waning. He put it down to cost of living, suggesting more people were reverting back to wood heaters if they had a cheap supply of timber, to save on electricity. "[But that comes at] a cost to the community, the health cost, and that's what is not being factored in at the moment," he said. Dr Wood believed population and education also played a role. "There are probably more people here now and I think people have forgotten probably how to use the wood heaters," he said. John Innis, an air quality specialist with Tasmania's Environment Protection Authority, said air pollution had been higher this year. But he said that was partly driven by the weather, pointing out a windy winter in 2016 swept much of the pollution away, whereas this year had been calmer and colder. He said some parts of Launceston were more affected by smoke than others, noting wood heater use was higher in outer areas, and a single, poorly used wood heater could have a profound impact on local air quality. Air pollution causes cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness and cancer, with the World Health Organization estimating it led to 4.2 million deaths globally in 2019. But it usually stems from multiple sources — including industry, traffic, large populations and energy production — making it difficult for many cities to tackle. Launceston is a different story. It is three and a half hours' drive from Kennaook/Cape Grim, an area famous for having the cleanest air in the world. During summer, Launceston's air quality is excellent. Dr Markos said its winter air pollution was almost entirely due to wood heaters, along with climate and topography. This makes finding solutions for the problem easier. Other countries, like New Zealand, have restrictions on wood heater use and the ACT plans to phase them out by 2045. But the idea has faced fierce opposition in Tasmania. During the recent state election campaign, both major parties ruled out a wood heater ban. The Launceston City Council plans to deliver a new Clean Air Strategy before next winter, after years of delays. But the council's chief executive, Sam Johnson, said he expected air quality to remain an issue into the future. Dr Wood suggested other public policies would yield results, like subsidies for home insulation and heat pumps, and education programs on wood heater use. "They need to be quite holistic in their view," he said. "Helping people to put insulation into their houses as a number one, I think, is really important." Dr Markos suggested a tax on wood heaters would be effective. He said a wood heater ban would not be his first choice, but believed it would be necessary if air pollution levels were still high by 2030. "If it's been 35 years and we're still not getting there, then sometimes you've got to bite the bullet and do something more radical," he said.

Future of world-significant fossil site secured with Nilpena cattle station sale

A quarter of a century ago, Ross and Jane Fargher opened the gates of their cattle station, Nilpena, to a team of palaeontologists to examine fossils found in the property's rocky hills. So began a long love affair with the remote property in South Australia's Flinders Ranges for US palaeontologist Mary Droser and her family. "These rocks capture the dawn of animal life," Dr Droser said. "And so imagine turning over a rock and having those fossils see the light of day for the first time in over half a billion years. Those "crazy things" are fossils of soft-bodied marine organisms that existed before animals had skeletons, when the arid area 530 kilometres north of Adelaide was more ocean that outback. Since Ross Fargher uncovered the fossil site in the mid-1980s, Dr Droser and her team from the University of California, along with experts from the South Australian Museum, have excavated 40 ancient sea beds. The largest one, which they've focused on recently, is known as Fun Bed. "As you look across the surface you can see lots of bumps and squiggles, and every inch of this bed is covered with the fossilised remains of organisms," Dr Droser said. Some are familiar, like the poster child of the Ediacaran period, Dickinsonia, and South Australia's state fossil emblem, Spriggina. Spriggina is named after Australian geologist Reg Sprigg, who discovered these types of fossils in the Ediacara Hills in 1946, inspiring the name of the Ediacaran period. Other fossils on Fun Bed are newer finds, including Obamus coronatus, named after former US president Barack Obama. "This guy here is called Quaestio simpsonorum, which has a question mark in the middle of it," Dr Droser explained as she pointed to the fossil. "This was newly discovered on this bed and we have about 15 on this bed, and it's totally whacky." Someone who has worked and played on these hills almost as long as Mary Droser is her son Ian Hughes, who started coming to Nilpena as a baby. "I love being out here. The people are family and also the science, there's just so many fossils," Mr Hughes said. Now 25, the Harvard University marine biology PhD student dedicates a good deal of his time to Earth's ancient sea creatures including the wormlike Uncus dzaugisi, which he identified last year. "We're really quite confident that it was an early ecdysozoan and so this is a member of a group of animals that includes things like insects and nematode worms, so a really exciting advanced fossil for the Ediacaran." As more rare rocks have been revealed, including what Dr Droser says are the fossilised remains of our oldest relative, researchers are gaining a much clearer view of the big picture. "We're starting to understand how these communities functioned," Dr Droser said. "So yes, I have no plan of ending in the very near future. I have a lot of great students who will continue to work here, because one day it will be very hard for me to make it up these hills." But while Mary Droser's work will continue, the farming family who invited her on to Nilpena are farewelling the property they've called home for more than 40 years. In 2019, the Farghers sold two-thirds of the station to the South Australian government, which turned it into the Nilpena Ediacara National Park. "We were keen to not just sell it as a pastoral lease, because the next people that bought it may not be interested in fossils," Ross Fargher said. And now, as the site attracts more attention, the Farghers are signing over the rest of the property to the government, which is extending the park. "It'll probably hit home when we drive out with our last load of gear from the homestead at the end of the year. At the moment it still feels like it's our place," Mr Fargher said. "Jane and Ross are family … [it's] very sad for us, but I think you have to look at the future and how things move ahead and what's best for everybody," Dr Droser said. It's a legacy that is set to make it onto a very elite list. Nilpena is at the centre of a decade-long bid for the Flinders Ranges to make it onto UNESCO's World Heritage List for its role in telling the story of the dawn of animal life. "World Heritage is a really long process. I'm not sure how many of them I want to do in my lifetime," SA National Parks program director Jason Irving said.
